Hackers, The Net both sucked. However I have heard that "Sneakers" was a good movie. I guess that would be my second choice.

Gosh! this movie sucks. Lets disect it part by part.
First of all Geeks are not six foot hunks, have any of you seen how Cmdrtaco looks ? Even his mother wont recognise him.. heh heh..
And next is female geeks who just ooze sexuality.. bahh.. I been looking for gorgeous female geeks all through my life. The only ones I ever found were in the HR dept with an IQ of one digit and in the bloodsuckin marketing dept, who has no clue of wht the software does and what it doesnt do.
I like Tim Robbins, I wouldnt call this his best yet, but atleast he has tried to pretend like Gates, sans the facemask..
And what was Scott McNealy doing there, giving away prizes. Did Sun fund this whole thing. I thought only Larry Ellison a.k.a Alpha male was dumb enough to snoop around Redmond. Or maybe he had no clue till the movie came out, and now regrets putting his face in this crappy movie.
Well the Skullbocks or whatchaever you call them, it seems that only the snottish snobbish Stanford produces intelligent minds. I wouldnt listen to more than two mins to a Stanford graduate. I have seen better minds from Cornell and Illnois. And this movie kind of attempts to spread the notion that whole of silicon valley is full of brilliant minds out of Stanford. Jeez..gimme a break. No offense, the best minds I have seen till now are mainly from Russian colleagues, Israelis, Chinese,Indians and few Americans. None of them happened to be from Stanford though..
You cant take a crappy movie which stinks like s@#t and then put an interview with Maddogg about the benefits of Open Source and Linux and then try to ride on that hype alone. And the worst part, was if you check the forums for the movie, you would see an ongoing fight with so called open source advocates and so called closed source advocates, and its so childish.
I dont know what this movie stands for, but I hope we wont have to look back and shudder. I hope there are no future releases, and this is laid to rest six foot deep under ground, left to rot.
Lastly but most important, society and babes in particular looks upon geeks and the tech community with disdain, not just because we are geeks and we get a six figure paycheque (atleast used to:)), but they cant comprehend our minds, they cant gather whats going on in our intellects. They are scared about what they might find, and they hate what they cant understand and so they brand us as geeks. Well, with Ryan Philippe leading the way, if any of us gets to bed some cute babe now on, then I would say this movie was a success..
Not because Microsoft wouldnt be dumb enough to do it, but because if all the tech firms decide to hire people only from one race, they would simply lose out in the long run.
However, there might have been some white supremacist jerks in any company, and I have met a few in my time, but they can do indeterminable damage to careers and company profiles. such as what might have happened here. As for the plaintiffs mentioned, I would have expected them to take the matter to the topmost level within their company, and I really dont understand their agenda in bringing it up now. Maybe they just wanna make money, maybe they are seeking justice, but honestly, it doesnt matter anymore.
If you are being put down, then stand up and fight. Dont quit your job, fight and if possible, take the whole thing to court while you are working there. It would be appreciated then. Then quit and join Sun or whatever. But if you would rather do nothing about it then, and decide to bring it up years later, then I have to question their intentions.
I believe all races are equal. And the jobs should go to people who deserve them. I have met a couple of brilliant black guys who are intelligent hackers and programmers in Redmond. And they loved working there. Not because they didnt know about Linux:). But the point is, if a person is technically sound, then most times he wouldnt be put down. But its a different story in the management circles. And I have had my share of dumbos who get their work done by other geeks and take credit.
If it had not been for the mass hysteria, the world wouldnt have sat up and noticed that they had to spend billions of dollars on hiring us to do the necessary work. Y2k was not just about one year or a couple of digits, it along with the explosion of Internet, created all this Dot com hype, created all these jobs, and put the economy on the forward gear. Now that we are on a slowdown, with possible recession looming, we need another miracle to turn all this around. I am thankful that the dotcom bubble is finally burst though. Cant imagine anyone buying stupid pets on the internet though, what a friggin biz model..

Itanium would surely be rolled out targeting the Advanced Server market and thats where MS wanted to be. And not just MS, add Sun and several others to the list too.
If Linux could just target the server market and ignore everything else, with the new distros running on Itanium Servers would mean a lot to firms who would look for solid servers.

Microsoft - sorry guys, do better next time!.
First of all, lets drag that teacher in to slashdot court and whoop his candy ass.
And then, have him apologise to the whole school including the kid, and have the school take the kid back with apologies ofcourse.
After which, the stupid Netnanny software should either fix their software (if it was an unknown bug - low probability) or send the school an update with the new fixes.
After which the kid should be commended for taking up the challenge, and should be educated by Emmanuel Goldstein and Kevin Mitnick to know when to begin and when to stop.
I dont plan to post to this Article, not because I have no knowledge about the topic, but because the Article was posted by its Author with only one view to it. If the question was framed like "Could you tell me the Advantages/Disadvantages of using MS Exchange ?" it would have encourage some serious discussion here. But since the Question here is "Could you tell me only the disadvantages of using MS Exchange, coz I want to push it down" you are cutting down anyone who wants to make an intelligent post about both sides of the question.
I am not sure why Slashdot still remain so fanatic against other closed source solutions. But I would seriously discourage topics like this unless they encourage discussion from both sides. IF you just wanna rant, then set up a discussion group for Anti M$ groups and just rant.
Two cents. And I am sure to get moderated for this, but try thinking about it after you moderate me down.
Its purely under the clout of Microsoft that Corel would be making their future decisions. It makes sense to M$ to discourage all further development on Linux other than the porting to.Net framework, because they dont need one more Linux flavor to compete with, they need an ally on the Linux side which would help them better integrate to their.Net framework. Another interesting thought would be that Corel maynot stop releasing any more versions for Linux, but they would do so by working with MS, and I presume Corel would be the first vendor who would have the.Net framework integrated with in.
As for WordPerfect, I presume MS would love to tout that as an alternative to StarOffice, and to reduce Sun's impact on the Desktop Productivity Tools market. And once WordPerfect replaces StarOffice on the desktop market, I wouldnt be surprised if Microsoft phase it out gradually or move MS Office to other platforms.
My two cents, might worth two million in a couple of years:)
Get out of that "I know it all" mode and appreciate what they have accomplished to enrich the developer community worldwide dumbo..
If you dont like M$, go and watch Bill Gates and jack off. We dont want you here unless you have something meaningful to post..
If you just wanna rant, put your mouth in your mothers pussy and do that.
Well.. you did it Moron.. You moderated me down without even reading what its all about. And do I care.. ...Microsoft is spinning [.Net] as innovative new platform but what they're really doing is giving developers an updated set of handcuffs...
Yeah Right.. The same one Java Developers wear:)
..Essentially,.NET is an effort to help traditional Visual C++ and Visual Basic programmers catch up with the times....
Tell me whats wrong with that Bozo !!.. Both these languages has still a huge market share than anything else in the world. And most of the existing systems currently being ported and rewritten to other languages are developed in it. What Microsoft is doing is trying not to lose market share, and in turn come up with a Loosely coupled architecture for integrating and deploying heterogenous systems. Yup..Flame Me.
....There are no third party vendors of ASP+. In contrast there many vendors of JSPTM solutions for a variety of platforms...
First off all, JSP was a ripoff from ASP. ASP has a much bigger developer base and ASP developers has been crying for better features and thats where ASP+ comes in. Now ASP+ will use Visual Basic, C#, and possibly other languages for code snippets. All get compiled into native code through the common language runtime (as opposed to being interpreted each time, like ASPs). So you could mix and match languages and not be tied to Java alone.
...Microsoft has not suggested or even hinted that the.NET platform as a whole will handed over a standards body, so standardization can only exist at the language level....
First of all, Sun doesnt work well with IBM or anyone else in opening up Java. Now they cry wolf when MS doesnt open up the Framework For.Net. M$ has already given Corel the responsibility for building the Framework for Other OS's including Linux. Obviously it would be benefit them financially, but we are not tied down to one OS ultimately.
..The Java language, VM, and APIs are all vendor neutral. There is no vendor lock in....
Yeah right..except that you are locked in to one language who still dont deliver in terms of Portability.
.....The key difference is that the Java platform is a mature cross-platform solution with no direct ties to any underlying operating system.....
Where does this guy live ? Antartica ? Corel would work with M$ in porting the.Net framework over to other OS. I would believe it when I see it, but efforts are underway. So if you dont know what you are talking about then SHUT UP..and dont mislead poor tech junkies out there.
...This means that any nontrivial application built on the.NET platform must run on Windows, and Windows alone....
Tsk..tsk.. This guy just dont realise..does he..
...Apparently, the underlying goal of.NET is to perpetuate platform lock-in.....
Pure Unadulterated FUD.. No wonder since SUN sponsors this guy's Chopper Trips:)
....Sun is not the only vendor of the Java platform. IBM, Symantec, Apple, as well....
Well didnt we all hear sometime back that these other vendors were planning to liberate Java from Sun ? tsk..tsk..
...Third parties have inspected the Java platform's publicly-available source code for security holes.....
True.. But Sun should rather worry about closing the holes in Sun Solaris 2.7 before they comment on Windoze.
Ultimately, no Interpreted language would ever handle a candle to something that compiles to native code. M$ is leveraging that to provide integration across heterogenous platforms through the CLR. Like it or not..its going to happen and thats what make sense.
I believe soon Daycare would be in everyones mind. But not right now. Look at the hitech industry. I would say that the majority of the engg department consists of Non US citizens, who have a spouse who takes care of the kids at home. Daycare is not much of an issue there.
Another fact is that, the tech industry were booming so rapidly, that people screwed up their priorities. Money and StockOptions came first, comfort and kids came last. This would soon change as the industry stabilizes and these issues would come to the forefront soon. If you look at recent polls conducted, that idiotic foosball game rated last among the perks people wanted.
Well, this is not an advertisement for Ubid.com. Well, I have been buying stuff from these guys for quite a long time now. I bought a Visiontek GeForce around an year back for only 119.00 and a couple of months back bought an Visiontek NVidia Geforce GTS 32 DDR for a measly 159.00. I am sure there are not a place on the Internet where you could find something cheap as that. Its not Ebay, so you dont have to worry about some jerk posting something he doesnt have. At Ubid, you buy directly from suppliers. So your butt is pretty much covered. These cards were new, and recently I found 3dFX 5500 64MB DDR cards going for a cheap 269.00.
Well all I am saying is not to go and buy something from there, but when you dont have that much moolah to buy the high end cards, you dont have to settle for a TNT2 or a GeForce for 150 or more from some site like EBay or any of those B2C sites. You just need to know where to look. And in my experience this site has it all. Check it out guys.. And ahem.. it runs on ASP/IIS, so dont flame them for that. All it matters is whether they are able to deliver. Well in my experience, they have done more than that.
Now before you moderate me, let me ask you this... So Doom was ported to Internet C++ and Tetris too.. So what ? Until or unless you have major corporations and developer communities take interest in the language, porting games to that particular language is not gonna help. I havent read the features for this Internet C++ yet, so I could be just jerking off here. Anyway my two cents..
According to the Article, they are just mulling over it and havent made up their mind. As usual, At Slashdot its much ado about nothing:).. Aahh..just another day in the geek community
Duh..! I dont know what Slamming means.. Maybe someone could explain..
You live in Boston ?? Gawd!! You suck.. you should be in the bayarea..paying 2000 bucks rent for a one bedroom apartment, walking in to a grocery store with a one mile queue every evening, settling down in front of the TV listening to Al Gore telling you that he invented the Internet with Bill Gates
Gaming industry is just the same as IT. Everyone expects the same company to churn out quality software all the time, mayit be ID Software or someone else. But sometimes some unknown group of people put together a gem and it takes the industry by its balls. There are quite a few of them which has proved that it doesnt always take an established company to churn out something good.
Sometimes individuals or groups of people are enough. For eg. Serious Sam, the new First PErson Shooter from Croteam, a small group of people in Croatia has put out a beautiful engine which could handle vast detailed areas, just like what Doom used to do. I get incredible framerates with 32 bit color on my GTS card. Its rumored that Croteam could very well have put out an engine which would rival the Quake3 engine when it comes to OpenGL.
Same goes for another demo called XIsle, which could be found from the Nvidia downloads page, which should be coming out soon, which again is truly a work of art. Last but not the least, GunMan Chronicles, which started out as a mod for Quake2 and then got ported to be a Half Life mod, is not being released by Valve as a new Game.
Its gonna be a "take no prisoners" battle ahead for 3D Game Engines. And when ID comes out with their new engine for Doom, I could only wait breathlessly because every day of my life, I fall in love with Quake3 Engine.
TIVO had atleast the courtesy to notify you that their policy is being changed and that you can opt out if you like. But what about sites that has Double Click invisible banners to track the users in their webpages. What about failed dot coms who are selling their customer information to others. Respect TIVO for what they did. I am sure they had valid business reasons to do so.
Makes me wonder.. Amazon came out with patenting One click around an year back. Why didnt these guys come out sooner ? Or did their CTO wake up one day all of a sudden and realized that "heck.. we did that before":).. Well I think Amazon shouldnt worry too much about someone else stealing their patents. The whole damn thing could be closed down in an year if they dont find some dumb VC to fund this behemoth:)
"Our agreement with Yahoo confirms that music on the Internet will thrive when parties work together," said Hilary Rosen, president and chief executive officer of the RIAA
What this means is that Any agreement which involves RIAA would succeed, because they could use their clout to bludgeon through any opposition from both Artists and public.
This sickens me and anyone out there, something goes wrong in any industry and the Govt steps in to mend the ways, or so it says. M$ Trial is one, RIAA and MPAA are other two stories. Now now.. Microsoft probably deserved most of it, but its setting a dangerous trend. Inviting the Govt to tend to squabbles, which then uses mass media to brainwash people behind it, spread dogma and try to instill wrong notions amidst the public about whats right and wrong.
RIAA wants to become the Iron Curtain behind which Big Arm Record companies could flourish, just like what Firms used to do by paying a cut to the Mafia. Theres no difference here, only here the Govt is doing it. The beaureacrats would try to control technology because they dont understand it, and they fear anything that they dont comprehend.
I could be wrong, but then there are others who think the same.
I know slashdotters would try hard to get you some statistical data to prove (atleast for the time being) that Apache would outperform IIS. But what if Apache cant. Now.. i am not trying to start a flame war, I have used both, and not in small ECommerce sites, but I have used Apache in a site which gets millions of hits per day and the same goes for IIS. IIS is not as matured as Apache is, because Apache happens to be one of the longest and most successful Open Source project other than Linux.
IIS was pushed out of the door by Microsoft couple of years back when they didnt have any webserver to take on the Internet by its horns. So I wouldnt call it matured till 3.0. But 4.0 is a superior product and let me tell you, its only going to get better. Open Source or not, the ideas that would be implemented in both would be relatively the same. Security is one issue that both the webservers havent addressed to a lot extent and its where they needs improvement the most.
My question is when it comes to serving up Dynamic webpages the most efficient way possible, what matters is not whether its Open source or not, what matters is whether who serves up the most in less time, and what load it could handle. And if its Apache who comes out as a clear winner, then well and good, go for it. Just dont go for it because its the brethren for Linux and its Open Source. Businesses dont care less, as you pointed out in your post. They need superior performance and webservers that handle huge load and not something that bucks under pressure. I am sure there are reviews and benchmarks available to do that.
When all is said and done, I dont care whether the software that I recommend to my Clients is Open Source or not. What interests me is a 24x7 support, faster patches or fixes , fast deployment, security and performance. If the patch comes out of Redmond or a Basement in Illnois, I dont care.
Sure, it does hide it from the Firewall. But you could use Firewall to look at SOAP Packets and then stream them inside. Its possible. Look at the new Spec for SOAP. Another thing is SOAP is a Simple protocol. It leaves pretty much everything else like Garbage collection, Security etc to the person who implements the solution. Thats the beauty of it and thats its flexibility and thats why its not cumbersome like IIOP or RMI or DCOM
I dont need J/Integra , I could just use the new Weblogic App Server which provides support for hosting COM components by creating a Java Wrapper around them, which I must say is not a very efficient way to do it.
What I mean about Java is theres no way you expect the whole world to follow Java. there are systems out there which are working and doesnt make sense (business wise) to code them in Java. These systems could take advantage from a new framework which would help in integrating with newer Web Interfaced systems if you follow SOAP or the.Net way. And its more open than Java would ever be. And COM/DCOM/CORBA all suck bigtime over the net, they are too damn slow to make methodcalls and for marshalling data. SOAP would improve on it and also make it more interoperable by freeing the approach from getting tied down to any specific protocol/platform/language. Which is what I believe is a more sensible approach.
.Net is built on an open source protocol SOAP. which enables anyone to write his own version on any language he please. It wouldnt be long before someone build the.Net framework for different platforms like Linux or Unix. Microsoft is just trying to pry the control out of Java's cold dead hands. It makes sense too.
The world is not gonna communicate in pure java. Its not about one language, its all about interoperability across platforms. The Framework is pretty flexible so as to allow anyone to write the same framework for any platform and it wouldnt be too late before someone does.
Microsoft is attacking both Sun in its Server market (by pushing Windows 2000 Advanced Servers) and Java in its pedestal by pushing forward the notion of interoperability through diverse languages using the same framework. It would be interesting to see the benchmarks.
SOAP got me all warmed up, and I am looking forward to see how.Net holds up against Java.

Well in my experience, they have done more than that.
my two cents..
Let me jot down a couple of scenarios.... Dont moderate me..Learn to laugh at my perversion
... aaarghh..cant think of anything else.. I am a perverted geek. Oops. I just spoke on behalf of 90% of the geek community...
Imagine going to Porn sites and tweaking the n*ppl*s of Jenna Jameson..(Edited for the sake of 11 yr old Cmdr Taco)
Imagine
According to the Article, they are just mulling over it and havent made up their mind. As usual, At Slashdot its much ado about nothing :)..
Or did their CTO wake up one day all of a sudden and realized that "heck.. we did that before" :).. Well I think Amazon shouldnt worry too much about someone else stealing their patents. The whole damn thing could be closed down in an year if they dont find some dumb VC to fund this behemoth :)
I dont need J/Integra , I could just use the new Weblogic App Server which provides support for hosting COM components by creating a Java Wrapper around them, which I must say is not a very efficient way to do it.
.Net way.
What I mean about Java is theres no way you expect the whole world to follow Java. there are systems out there which are working and doesnt make sense (business wise) to code them in Java. These systems could take advantage from a new framework which would help in integrating with newer Web Interfaced systems if you follow SOAP or the
.Net is built on an open source protocol SOAP. which enables anyone to write his own version on any language he please. It wouldnt be long before someone build the .Net framework for different platforms like Linux or Unix. Microsoft is just trying to pry the control out of Java's cold dead hands. It makes sense too.
.Net holds up against Java.
SOAP got me all warmed up, and I am looking forward to see how
