All someone has to do to irk our interest, is to give us something to muck about, and we latch on to it. Whether it maybe a screenshot posted for Xbox or it could be a discreet name mentioned on a Trailer for AI, we latch on to it, analyze it (may it be for karma whoring), but we get to the truth, no matter how deep the rabbit hole goes. And we take pride in ourselves..for being geeks, for being on the perpetual journey for truth.
Although I wouldnt agree whether the site serves any purpose at all, apart from letting beautiful women know that the society thinks that they are beautiful and gets a higher rating, and less beautiful women get slapped with a rating of 2 and below (another segregation in this fucked up world), and letting morons drool over pics for whom the only way they can get close to these chics are by licking the monitor.
But apart from the rant, there are millions of websites that are out there which doesnt serve a purpose, which demoralizes us everyday, serves us with crap everyday, mocks our intelligence. Well, just dont go there. Ignore the website totally. Case taken care of and closed.
In the last two shootings atleast (in San Diego), no one can give a reason why the kids have snapped. Everyone who knew them would swear that they are not the type to don a sniper shot gun and go after other students, and they just have no clue why they have snapped. Society for a large scale and media is responsible for this.
Kids here when growing up has a huge dilemma posed before them. They look upon stars in the sports arena and tend to be like them, without even realising whether they liked the sport in the first place or not. they are forced by their parents, peers, friends, girl friends (or girls in school) to look cool, to act like a 240 pound humantank with an iq of less than 10, which is the only way to get girls and earn respect.
And anyone who doesnt go along or tries to be different is slapped as a loner, and ultimately ends up in drugs, bad company as a form of escape. Parents should be the first to realize that they need to listen to their kids and stand up for them if they need it. School authorities could in turn reduce the impact of sports on the overall curriculum and start concentrating on other relevant areas, and encourage kids to take up other activities. Sports has recently become a stage where 1000 kids worship a dozen others around the field, whether they deserve it or not.
If United States want to bring around their young population and once again wanna make an impact as a nation at the forefront of technology, and not as nation which blindly follows every score, every tally of a 240 pound football star with an attitude, then its time to change.
After the USSR disintegrated, US using its diplomatic and economical clout forced Russia to stop selling Cryogenic stages to India. Everyone pretty much thought now India wouldnt be able to put anything on orbit, much less create launch nuclear warheads. Well these guys pretty much decided,if Russia aint giving it to us, and we kinda know how to make them, then what the heck..lets make them ourselves.
This launch if it goes through successfully wont just be a triumph of india, but of every underdog out there who just didnt accept defeat when the odds were against them, but decided that "I am gonna do it myself ". Isnt this what Torvalds did ? Isnt this what each of us do someway or the other, that is not accepting defeat and building our future ourselves.
Cudos to India, and more over, Cudos to the guys who designed and built these cryogenic engines. These are the real hackers and deserves mention, not the politicians:)
Average eye cannot discern any difference between anything beyond 70 fps. And now that we have hit the plateau, its quite obvious that image quality is next. Even the GeForce2 Ultra hits a measly 25 fps when you run it on 32 bit, 1600 * 1200 splendour with 4x FSAA enabled. This is whats gonna keep the vendors busy for the next one year or more, bringing ultra realism to the graphics. Halo, Unreal II would all be capitalizing on that issue.
Gameplay would be next. AI would improve tremendously, storylines would improve, though sometimes you just dont care a f@#$ about the story and just wanna jump in and let that Chaingun rip.
My only worry would be that DirectX8 is fast becoming the API of choice among the developers (except Carmack who claims to only use OpenGL till kingdom come). And considering that Nvidia has now an unfair advantage over other cards, since they developed DirectX 8 along with M$, well my guess is as good as yours.
However a couple of weeks back, there was much stirring among the gamers when Kyro II kind of beat Ultra in Tile Based Rendering capabilities. I would welcome someone like that anytime.
They didnt try to squash the benchmarks when they were done against different OS's atleast. ITs Win NT and 2000. 2000 is pretty new and they are still tuning it up, so give them sometime and they would have it running better than NT.
But how about the Oracle One Million AD. If you havent heard of it, then atleast go to some website where they have put up this ad which is so much bs about nothing.
I dont see Linux becoming a threat to Windows on the desktop at all. With DirectX 8.0 coming out and Nvidia's new Geforce3 about to hit the market, it would only get all the more better with the new Vertex Shading capabilities and such. I am not downplaying the fact that OpenGL would very well pick up, and with ID touting OpenGL as the only API they would ever code against (although I would only take this with a pinch of salt), its sure to get interesting.
Linux could however be used for multiplayer games for them to run on a rock solid, stable and scalable server. I just dont see it making a niche for itself on the desktop market.
As Linux zealots, yes we are all happy when any vendor decides to package linux along with their devices.
But I disagree with your notion that all that users really need in a PDA is a simple address book. calendar , scheduler and browsing capabilities. See, when YOU decide what your user should have, thats when you are wrong. I dont believe Microsoft did a stupid thing by putting in an e-book reader, video and MP3 playback. When they have better rendering capabilities, when Nvidia starts putting out chips for handhelds as they would in the future (there are millions of users out there with a PDA, and Nvidia wont just ignore that market), we would definitely need ebook readers and Video playback. And memory is not an issue anymore, it were in the past.
Linux's enemy was never MS. it was always linux itself. Unless or otherwise you have tons of productivity apps that could run on a PDA (or atleast a handful which are really good), HP is not gonna capture a good chunk of the market share. WinCE may not be as advanced or secure as Linux on a handheld, but it gets most of the work done. And it looks good.
As for the Microsoft chains of oppression, well lets not talk about it now. They have binding contracts with HP, which is evident on HP's x86 server ads ("We recommend Windows 2000 Professional for business").
But if you just wanted to troll today, then I guess none of what I said would go to your head anyway.:)
I wonder why Hemos chose this topic today.. hmm.. nope... I am not planning to pay to keep Slashdot up and running, if thats what you ask me.
however I have heard that M$ pays handsomely for sites that choose to display their "Freedom to innovate" ads.. That would be so cool, to have slashdot to display that ad.:)
Dont moderate this up or down..just leave it as the way it is.
Not because the school had to cough up some dough, but because the value of America's educational system is being degraded day after day.
I wont put my voice behind this kid, if he wanted to voice something meaningful about the asst. principal, he would have found some better way than portraying the guy having sex with simpson, smoking marijuana and as a pedophile. These are quite harsh allegations and even if he deemed them funny, i am sure this hurts the general morale among teachers.
I am sure half of Slashdot would agree that they were better than the teachers that taught them, but then again, most of us would agree that wisdom that comes with age is ten times better than whats being taught as part of the curriculum. No wonder why people dont want to get in to the teaching profession anymore. After all, what do they get. Less money and to top it all, their own students alleging them of being a pedophile. I wouldnt be suprised if this shocks and saddens the whole teaching community as a whole
I agree that the school has nothing to do or has no power over what a student does after school. I wish the asst. principal had slapped a law suit on the kid and his parents first, rather than kicking him out of school.
My mother was a teacher, not in this country though. There are different method for teaching and some starts at the end of a cane. The parents and the kids accept this as a part of the learning process and everyone is better at the end of the day.

Thats all what Microsoft seems to be doing now. ITs sad, coz they do have the intellectual pool to build something as good as Linux, if not better. But all these jerks seems to be doing is the above three.. convince their customers and their mothers that nothing else works. When that doesnt work, because of both truth and hype about Open Source OS, they choose the second option, ie to Confuse. Corrupt was something that they always did.
Jim Allchin is nothing but a MS executive. What else do you expect from these hardnosed jerks ? I am sure, there are thousands of coders and geeks in MS who understand the benefits of Open Source and would love to hate this guy. I am pretty sure Gates wouldnt go on press and say something dumb as this.
Guys, right now a couple of million lines of code is better than 35-60 million that Windows 2000 has. In what terms, is yet to be defined. But the code bloat that Windows has, its well known.
Open Source has its benefits and flaws. There were books written on the concept. Open Source has always been beneficial to the Encryption algorithms and security as a whole. Microsoft wouldnt know anything about it, other than claiming NT complies with C2 Level security (it does, when its locked in a room and has no network card and no floppy drive:)).
I wish these guys would stop complaining and try to work on it as someone with a bit of common sense. Linux is here, Open Source is here.. accept it.. IF you cant, then you are well dead in the waters.
Moore thinks the open source development model is here to stay, but is not convinced it will become completely dominant. He believes that it will probably co-exist with the closed source model.
This is what I also believe. No matter how much we call it a revolution, these are two sides of the same coin and one cannot exist without the other. And lets not forget that some of the Open source software concepts were derived from closed source products. And another thing that is mentioned is that the main rival to Open Source is not Microsoft. The main rival is not even a corporate entity. I would say the main rival to Open source is the public not being educated enough to accept it. And user experience.
Atleast this would be far far better than the stupid geeks in Antitrust. Gosh, I swear if someone hadnt knocked off that "Open Source fanatic" geek, I would have done it myself:).
