    No it's not my fault that they do.

    I do not know if they can detect this sort of traffic but I think not. Not at least right now.

    Has anyone else thought of this problem?

    Is it possible to differ "good" traffic from "bad" traffic? I don't know.

    Please mod this up as funny. I haven't stopped laughing.

    I live in Sweden and some of the suppliers of fast Internet actually have a limit on how much you can download/upload via your connection.
    One of them has a fairly descent contract, 100Mbit/s and 300Gigs per month.

    One downside to notice is that if you get SYN-flooded or similar you have to pay for it. *bummer*

    My supplier does not have this and they also say that in the commercials. BTW I have ADSL 8/1 mbit/s (download/upload)

    Look at this as free advertising for the GNU/Linux community. Maybee some of those seeing this campain don't even know what Linux is? Maybee all they know of is Windows and then get interested in Linux. Maybee they want to see what Linux, that can compete with the biggest software company in the world, really is.

    On the other hand. The big companies that are about to decide wether to use MS or GNU software decide to go with MS software instead.

    I don't know. What do you others out there think about this?

    My god. Sometimes I think that people rant just for the sake of ranting. Shouldn't the community be pleased that the products being developed are being used for a neat purpose?

    KISS claims at their website that they are in compliance with the GPL. If someone thinks they aren't take'em to court or if you have proof ask them to come forward and explain.

    If we in the community continue to rant and complain about anything and everything we haven't accomplished anything at all.

    Embrace KISS and try to be friends with them, if they have violated the GPL, explain why and how in a proper way instead of just complaining.
    I think they will release code, if they have to, if everyone play nice. They aren't Microsoft you now.

    The thing is that if Open Source is going to be the way you code/implement/make money in the future you have to let companies use the code. What I have _seen_ they do not violate the GPL. I just downloaded the source from their website. Isn't that to contribute?

    If they however keep some code to theirselves they have to release it IF it violates the GPL. The only one who could answer that is Kiss-Technology and maybee the people behind MPlayer

    Open Source is not about free as in Beer it is about free as in speech. You are allowed to make money on GPL:ed products.

    And to quote the other reply to my post.: Have you upgraded the firmware? The newer firmware handles these glitches much better than it did when I got it to. Now it works almost with every divx/xvid encoded movie I try. I only know of one movie that I haven't been able to play, it was broken so I reencoded it.

    I own one of their players (The DP-450). I love it, simply love it. It is very easy to use, upgrade and it also plays all of my divx encoded movies which I burn on DVD-R as isos.

    I have the low-end because the networked one (DP-500) wans't in stock but I got this one cheap.

    I don't think they have violated the GPL .. the source is according to another post here availale at their website.

    If you get the chance and have the money. Buy it. It is products like these that are important to the Open Source community.

    Sun is scared of the Linux progress on as well the server as the desktop systems.

    Where I work we are looking into using Linux on the Desktops with vmware installed to run different OS:es. Windows and Linux mostly. This is to Lower costs.

    The users running Unix cad-stations are also looking into replacing HP-UX/Solaris and AIX with .. you guessed right Linux.

    On the servers were looking into replacing our database machines that runs on AIX/Solaris and HP-UX with .. you guessed it Linux.

    Now, why? Because it is a customer demand/wish. I work with outsourcing and the customers are getting more and more cost-aware. What are they doing to lower the cost? They look at alternatives for example Linux. They ask us if we can set this up, what should we answer? Well .. if we want to keep them .. YES.

    Well ... what I meant was the "slashdot effect" ;-)

    One thought of this effect:

    I live in Sweden and when Anna Lindh was murdered all of the major newssites as well as the TV sites and the government sites went down.

    The Internet is becoming one of the major places for information on what happens in the world. And I think it is time to think about this. I mean I use the Internet to look up information about practically everything. It is becoming an intergral part of the society, at least in the "western world".

    I think that the leading information sites need to fix this issue being "slashdotted" when critical information needs to be spread to people.

    We still have TV and radio, but for how long?

    This spacecraft has been in a very hostile environment for a long time now and to kill it they have to plunge it into the biggest planet in our solarsystem. That is what I call engineering.

    The strange thing though is that their site (Nasa) cannot hold up on the preasure from slashdot.

    ..is that solar power plants to produce environment friendly hydrogen or similar fuel
    could be placed in sunny countries along the
    coasts. Sahara is just one example, there are a
    lot of sunny countries out there.

    Then one could ship the "power" to environment friendly factories to produce electricity around the globe. At least in countries that does not
    have that much sun.

    Sure it might be expensive at first but think of
    it.
    You can today run cars on hydrogen, the
    trucks/boats etc that ship the fuel can run on the same fuel you use for producing electricity.
    hydrogen+oxygen=water=No pollution= We will be
    able to keep the earth a while longer.

    For shorter distances you can use pipelines to
    ship the fuel.

    This has to be a global project though and I doubt
    that rich countries will simply give this away to
    poor countries. But maybee, who knows.

    It seems that no media in Sweden has hopped on this FUD from SCO.

    I am thankful for that and it seems like media in europe either does not care or don't buy this crap that SCO spreads.

    Anyone else noticed this? How does these news spread here in Europe?

    This is a problem with multiple vendors, I've seen this many times, it is always the customer that suffers.
    In this case it was really interesting though that Oracle Support had info on the bug-fix and SCO did not even bother to look at it. Veritas had already done the fix for SCO UnixWare so they did not have to even call Veritas, just check their bug-database.

    Well .. you may be right. But SCO had the support for the entire platform including the Veritas FS. It was not installed as a third party product but rather integrated into the kernel of UnixWare.

    The fix we got was for the OS and nothing else.

    The boxes still couldn't cope though. They still crashed at least 2-3 times a week, luckily the corruption problem was gone.

    Is not an operating system I would recommend to any of my customers to buy and run on their servers.

    I have worked with this piece of **** OS and I can say one thing. Datacorruption.

    Real case:

    SCO UnixWare with veritas filesystem runs Oracle.

    Box crashes --> Oracle data corruption.
    These boxes crashed a lot (several times a week)

    We called SCO support who blamed Oracle ..
    Oracle desperatly tried to find the problem. It was a known bug, in guess what? SCO UnixWare.
    SCO did not allow Oracle Server to open the files with directIO, that is circumvent the filecache in the OS. By design it should but in this case it did not, it was a bug in the Operating System.

    SCO did not even bother to check their bug database and blamed Oracle who, thank god, found the problem.

    I guess that SCO is desperate to make money. Wait who has the money? IBM is rich let's sue em ..

    Use the Operating System that fit your needs.
    Linux here Windows there .. who cares as long as I have a job and can support my family.

    I am getting tired of all this Microsoft versus Linux discussions.

    I am a Unix techie .. I am a *REALLY* competent Unix techie ... I don't like Windows but I don't hate it either. The company I work for have all sorts of different OS:es .. Linux, Unix, Windows, OS/400, MVS, OpenVMS ... hell they got everything..
    The thing is to integrate all of these platforms and make em work together, THAT is what matters.
