    Huh? You were just saying that compilers optimize better than humans, then say that Java cannot beat any human? I'm sick of all these Java haters... :/

    If you use fopen(), fread(), fclose() etc., you're already doing object oriented programming in C.

    Can you explain that to the unenlightened? I don't follow.

    I doubt it was a guess. They would have had hundreds of years of knowledge in oral-tradition form, and many examples. The majority of the population would have:

    * Eaten extremely well (as in, same simple things over and over and not overeaten)
    * Would not have been exposed to many poisons like modern humanity is
    * Exercised all day 6 days a week with some sort of manual labor.

    With such a sample set, you'd probably get way more people living to their maximum age than you would today, even if it isn't as observable as it is with modern technology.

    Why don't you think it's OK to allow people who join a company after day 0 to get stock options? I just joined a new company and received some stock options. Granted, it probably won't be millions, but why do you think I shouldn't be allowed that form of payment? I plan on working hard and contributing to the value of the company as well or even better as the people who started before me.

    This article is bullshit. Someone wrote an Android app that stores information. That's not malware, that's an app. Malware would be doing it via holes in the system that are unprotected.

    Regardless of the debate of whether or not either the Iraq/Afghanistan war or the stimulus spending was a good idea, spending money inside the U.S. via the stimulus has an exponentially better effect for the economic health of the country than the foreign wars in Iraq/Afghanistan do.

    LOL, this whole conversation is about how the Silicon Valley workers are being paid too much.

    I'm a software developer at a San Francisco startup. I guarantee you my company is not importing poor people to work for less or ripping off the system. I don't know every single startup in the city - but I know more than a few, and all of those are not harmful to our society, but indeed the exact opposite.

    Every single tax that you've ever paid will almost always pay for something else that doesn't directly relate to you. And, generally, you are forced to pay tax. For example, all the liberals have to pay for all the conservative's wars, and that's a bagillion times more expensive than birth control.

    Atlas Shrugged is not a very good book. It's got unbelievable heros, horribly predictable drama, and redefines the meaning of the term "long winded". You may like its message, but it doesn't belong on a list of books that everyone should read.

    Yes, the Koran is the exact word of God and there are no translation errors.

    However, people still say that the Bible is the word of God regardless of translations.

    I read the court report (~40 pages) and that was not the information given. He was asked many times outside of the one incident of the conference call at the end to give his manager the passwords. If there was ONLY that one time, that would be different.

    ... and I HATE it. It's inferior in every way regarding usability as compared to Outlook.

    E-mails are more difficult to compose. There's only very basic formatting options. No format paster. In the world of browser tabs, it's very annoying that I now have to find the e-mail tab as opposed to switching between active programs to get my e-mail and calendar.

    The calendar is harder to use. It keeps moving the start of the 5 day week to the current day, making it hard to use. (On a more positive note, I like the temperature forecasts built in)

    The notifications suck. Suck suck suck. I tried the standard Google Notifier and the messages were left too long in the upper-right hand, blocking important information up there which lasted too long. They aren't customizable. And I've already missed so many meetings because the calendar reminders don't stay on the screen! You have to be actively watching for those reminders to do anything.

    I know it's fashionable to hate Microsoft and love Google, but come on. Outlook was a great product, and I was just forced to return to a technology that is 5 or 10 years behind.

    I am considered a pretty good developer (the word "rockstar" is stupid to me - maybe I am, maybe I'm not). I came in at a startup almost 2 years ago, and to this day I am still fixing problems that the original developers left.

    If the code had been written correctly in the beginning, we would have saved millions in man-hour-dollars. Millions.

    No, you don't need them all the time, but when you are building a foundation, you need it done right.

    Silly Valley, for all their cosmopolitan heirs, is one of the most provincial places in the world. They think that the only places on the planet where their business can be done is the Bay Area and India. They could save a lot of money by expanding into other areas of the country, and pick up some great talent. Want great programmers? Try Pittsburgh.

    Wrong. They don't think that. You can imagine that people who run a business have heard of the idea that they can hire anywhere, can't you?

    Well, what that is meant to mean is that it's not a church to teach you about how to reach God, Jesus, the afterlife, etc., but it does use spirituality/religion in its function. It is worded funny, I'll give you that.

    For many addicts, that's true. But I agree with you on this, that the converse is not necessarily true. Some problem drinkers may drink safely again. Sorta like how some food addicts CAN eat candy bars if done in moderation - in fact 200 calorie eating candy bars are a good way to keep cravings down so you don't eat 2000 calories.

    Please explain what the **** you just said. Who uses the term "algos"? Do you mean "algorithms"? And exactly how do you open up "HTML" to do spreadsheet work? How do I just write data in HTML? What do you mean that Windows isn't needed because OSX is around, does that mean you can pay for other proprietary software?

    You've written a lot of stats. But none of that makes Microsoft Office not the best productivity software that exists. No, I don't work for MS, but I do work on a Mac at work and trust me, all of the free and even Mac MS stuff SUCKS compared to Office on a PC.

    Hmm, I just walked across my design company's open-plan office floor and saw a Mac Pro under every desk and not a single fanboi was found.

    I can attest to this. I HATE MACS. I love Windows (fuck you /.! :) And I and every engineer at my work use Macs.
