Comment about Vista being a resource hog and unrunnable on the XY hardware? Its a piece of Microsoft software. Criticizing Microsoft is the local sport and favorite pastime on slashdot.
Now, if you were to say something like... "That Apple software/hardware isn't really all that cool as they advertise..." or god forbid try to say anything but praises about any Linux distro... Now that would get you at least a troll + flamebait moderation. At which point it would be best to let it slide and move on. If you tried to defend your position - you would get moderated to troll hell and your Freaks category would start to overflow.
Not necessarily. If done right. I know that it CAN be done right - Moore may be good but he is no god.
Remember the first reactions to the news that the blond guy from that movie about gay cowboys and from that horrible movie about medieval knights from the 21st century - was going to play the Joker? After Nicholson's iconic performance? Come on! What the hell were they thinking?
It can be done in a good way. Couple of them probably. Also, a thousand wrong ones too. But lets be optimistic for a change.
I want the spirit to be kept true to, not the actual pages.
Then you are among the few.
Most fans would rather have movies based on books and comics copied page for page to the screen than making it according to the spirit. Or whatever spirit means to the director, producers, studio execs, toy makers and actors.
Read the EW article - it should help you see how much of the book has been copied verbatim and how much of it was adapted while being "true to the spirit".
Oh... and the smiley is there. Comedian is wearing it in the Vietnam. Minus the bloodstain of course. And it appears in the end - on the date of the movie. This one is with the bloodstain.
Right now it is far less useful than for example googling for news about diseases.
For fuck's sake... look at the map. Half the diseases it lists are what could otherwise be described as "tummy aches". And most of them across US. It does not discover or verify anything. It is only generating noise at one end and ignoring everything at the other. It is a blind man holding an elephant's dick.
This isn't meant to solve all the problems, but I'm sorry - if implementing this concept means only one life is saved over the entire planet, it is entirely worthwhile. And if it increases reaction time to any single outbreak, it'll be irreplaceable.
No - it isn't. Did you bother to read what I said at all? Or look at the map they are presenting?
Example I made of China should point you out just how many cases are unseen if you miss a single language. And Google still speaks only a handful of them - badly.
While the lack of internet infrastructure has just made Africa free of disease. WO-FUKIN-HOO! US is choking with disease and epidemics but Africa is clean.
Disease control costs money and resources. Both human and material. A tool like this is nothing more than a noise generator at this point. And a faulty one at that. It will create requests to send in medical research teams to a bunch of restaurants on Manhattan cause someone had an upset stomach, but it will ignore almost entire continents because it does not speak their language or because they don't have "the internets".
Duh. Some places will clearly benefit more than others... so what? If I have the ability to increase the literacy rate in five nations, I'll do it even if I can't do it in all the rest yet.
Yeah... sure... And if we had the ability to increase the size of tits in developed nations, who really cares about some Africans dieing of cholera, right? Both of those things are a "doctor matter".
Epidemics are not about "one life is saved over the entire planet". Epidemic means that it is a threat to a entire society of people. One life, or five or ten or even hundred can be meaningless in such situations.
Right now, this is a unreliable and therefor pointless and dangerous tool that can only increase the dispersion of available resources without actual benefit to anyone. In 5-10 years, as Google ads more languages and actually learns to use properly the ones it lists now - maybe there will be SOME use for it. Even so - it is still flawed unless you start feeding it medical records from every medical center and emergency room in the world. But then - the privacy concerns raise its ugly head. So we will probably never see that part. So, unless we all turn into compulsive hypochondriacs who blog all day about their diseases - there will be not be enough input even in developed nations.
And even in a world of compulsive hypochondriacs who have no privacy concerns - Africa and a great part of the rest of the world will remain out of the system because they lack the internet connection. And compulsive hypochondriacs who blog all day about their diseases.
It is not that I don't like the idea but it is essentially flawed.
A) It still requires human input. No one reporting the disease does not mean that it is not there. Looking at former Yugoslavia and seeing only 1 case of meningitis while here in Bosnia everyone knows about (and it is on TV, radio and in the papers) the brucellosis epidemic that has been going on for months or even years maybe.
B) That input must be made over the internet. Look at Africa. It is practically squeaky clean. There is one case diarrhea in the entire Botswana. And everyone is completely healthy up in the North. Could it possibly be due to the lack of internet-based inputs instead of due to the lack of diseases? Check out UK or the East Coast of USA. They are crawling with diseases.
C) It should preferably be in English. Can the crawler read any of these articles:
Basically, what they come to is that there is a SHITLOAD of cases of brucellosis among the various cattle in Bosnia. And that it is going to stay that way for a long time, cause nobody is really doing anything about it.
It is a fine idea, but unless you have every square kilometer of Earth covered with internet access and people who will report it in a language that the crawler understands - it is beyond useless. Even dangerous. Zoom out over Asia and turn on the Google in Chinese under Feeds. China's disease count jumps from around 40 to around 140.
No. You can't fix all the problems by "putting it on the internet".
"comfort capsules"..."aesthetically pleasing and furnished to reflect the rank of the senior leaders using the capsule," with beds, a couch, a table, a 37-inch flat-screen monitor with stereo speakers, and a full-length mirror.
Dear USAF, For the last time - NO, you CAN NOT use taxpayers money to fund your personal fuck-rooms.
Sincerely yours, US Congress

It also does not exclude smuggling guns, rape, software piracy, robbing banks, war crimes and being gay.
Few... That kid got off easy. If they had slapped him with all that Red Bull does not exclude - he would be hanged while fried on a electric chair inside a gas chamber in front of a firing squad with a lethal injection in his hand.
There is absolutely no mention of all those technicians that gave their lives so that Phoenix Mars Lander could get it's rasp on time. We should all honor them with a moment of silence and contemplation about how many men and women are no longer with us cause they gave the ultimate sacrifice. Those greatest among us, that willingly fell in dozens - for each single one of the rasp's teeth.
See what I mean?
Just mentioning it you get moderated offtopic. This one will probably be moderated as overrated.
...when the department of supply and delivery changes to metric without telling anyone in the department of works.

Try the HD one if you can't make it out.

No. You can't fix all the problems by "putting it on the internet".
You are forgetting the first rule of comfort capsules: If you build it - they will come.
"comfort capsules"..."aesthetically pleasing and furnished to reflect the rank of the senior leaders using the capsule," with beds, a couch, a table, a 37-inch flat-screen monitor with stereo speakers, and a full-length mirror.

Steal it from Wayne Industries R&D center?
Surely you mean "The Procrastinator"?
"World's leading physicist moves to the university in the middle of nowhere"
I wonder...
They are also modest and humble.

Ahh.. you are talking about beerinary numbers there...
I am afraid your sister is probably right. Or at least closer.
Couple is definitely 2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Couple
Two or (in informal usage) more items of a type
Couple of... 2 and a number close to 2 but not quite 2. Since we don't know that many numbers - we will call that couple as well.
Few is a bit more, bu definitely less than say... a lot.
I am guessing it should be imperial.
Metric shitload would be a unit, not a number. Something like Pi*unused_calories/kg*meter^3.
Or something like that.
Definitely derived unit though.
Hold on cowboy! It has been many seconds since you last posted, please wait another many seconds before you can post again.
It is nice to see that everyone can moderate today. Even those without sense of humor OR attention span to notice the joke.
Very democratic.
You forgot this one.
1. Create free OS
2. Update it
3. ???
4. Profit!
Also... no mention of Beowulf clusters, Natalie Portman and many others...
Their cars gets forty rods to the hogshead and that's the way they like it!
Relative quantities to what? Sounds to me like it's counting, just that they don't have much need for it and only use very basic pointers.
Aah... you know...
Like "couple of", "few", "a bunch", "a lot", "many", "shitload" etc...
How many couples are there in a shitload?
I guess when theres only 300 of you, counting isn't your main problem.
Right... cause we humans only count other humans...
