one simple solution would be to have wi-fi clients automatically attempt to use the default password "open" for encrypted networks if none is supplied.

wi-fi access points should strongly indicate to users that using the password "open" is better for security than no password.

Just out of curiosity, have you tried installing a generic copy of Windows on generic hardware? I have. It's not a pleasant experience.

huh? i haven't bought a branded desktop since my '96 Gateway 2000 machine, and i have never had any issues installing windows. to be fair, the drivers for more esoteric parts usually come on a CD in the box, but usually everything just works out of the box.

just last week i removed my c: drive out of my 4-year old machine, dropped it into a brand new machine. after a couple of reboots almost everything was working fine. i had to download new drivers for some hardware, but windows told me the hardware wasn't working right and told me where to get the drivers. everything else was either already on the disk, or installed by windows update.

the problem with implementing tough DRM measures is that it removes the age-old excuse for lackluster sales: "the pirates are stealing all our profit."

i'm guessing that after maneuvering themselves into this uncompromising position, they found they still were unable to sell crappy games to an increasingly disenfranchised audience.

after becoming stuck between a rock (admitting their games are crap) and a hard place (admitting DRM doesn't work), they've finally decided that the minimal loss to piracy is far more preferable than the other two embarrassments.

not now, but down the line, maybe by win9, the non-metro, non-store-requiring 'desktop experience pack' will be only available in the 'pro' versions, or for an addition price.

developers will take their time to port stuf to metro initially, but they'll be pushed to do this eventually if they want to take advantage of the full windows user-base.

Apple is doing the same thing with gatekeeper. it's not mandatory, but it's enough of a pain that it encourages developers to use the App store.

both MS and Apple pushing developers towards their respective stores will end, eventually, in the death of the existing open distribution model we have today.

Fuck if we can pump crude from Alaska to Texas, we should be able to move some water around.
