If the Windows world is so great, why is it that users of the Win OS write worms, trojan horses and viruses to attack their OS? I don't see that in the Mac or UNIX world.

Windows does run on the Mac*, and so does XWindows.
*Virtual PC I see they have a new VirtualPC product. For you Intel inclined people.
You know they found a new virus for the Mac, but it is only for those who are stupid enough to use Outlook/entourage.
Wait until MS starts "Up Dating" corporate websites without their permission. Of course it will be in the license that all data on your computer and website is property of MS.
I have used Macs since the eighties and I have not had one virus, worm or trojan horse infecting my computer. There is always a first time.

Getting XWindows working has been my biggest problem with getting GIMP running on OSX. When the acid wears off, it should be easier.
It's those marathon clusters that are powering the independent studios in Nashville. Screw Sony and the other mega studios. You can set up a G4 recording studio for less than what a recording session would cost. the sound quality is just as good too. You can also do the cover art, and burn the discs on the same machine. then when it is time for MTV or TNN, you can edit your video.
I noted the boxes in the feature artical were running OS9 and OSX.
Computers can give us the power unless someone like MS takes it away.
though they may not be made for racks, those handles make moving them very easy. Their whole design is good for heat dissapation. the handles hold it off the ground, allowing for airflow under each computer.
I remember them saying the design is good for rackmounting, but I would have to see how it is done.
You are right, the NSA would be much more discreet. One thing one must remember, the smaller the circle, the less chanced for compromise.
I would be surprised if the NSA didn't use MS products as a mole. As far as letting MS know, I doubt it.
If MS uses the exploits for industrial espionage, I don't know. But I am sure they are tempted. It would be hard for them to resist checking out what some competitor or law office is up to.
the intelligence community protects its secrets under layers of "need to know." Though we know that some NSA agents worked at MS, we did not know what they were doing there. We didn't have the need to know. Even the president can be shut out from info because he may not have a need to know. so he won't know that he doesn't know, so he will not want to see info he doesn't know exsists.
It would be naive to think that the NSA doesn't use the most widely used software for government and business, for its own purposes. It is also naive to think that MS isn't getting something in return. And to think that the Justice department wouldn't go after MS is naive too. To not go after them would raise suspicion.
the software community would have blown the whistle, saying they are backing off the case because MS is in bed with the NSA.
Most NSA guys are just normal geeks who like the work, and don't think of the moral consequences of what they are doing. They party as hard as they work.
I did what they say, and it runs like a charm. You Mac people out there, this build is fine. I have had one crash from subscribing to a news server.
I am using it now, and like it very much. I haven't touched my Netscape once today. I don't really need it.
Good work guys and gals!
Good for you my Wiccan friend. Xfree86 has been ported to OSX, so don't worry about not being able to use GIMP.
Also, check out Colorit!. It takes PS plugins and is under $50. I jump from GIMP to Painter, to Colorit!, playing to the strengths of each.
The Nix geeks won't be able to resist OSX. They love new toys.
Tenon has some tools for it too.
I am a mailcarrier, and I have experienced the weird addresses. the worst I delivered was, a post card from Italy to Mamaw and Papaw, Slone road. From Jimmy. One man on the road had the first name of James, so I figured he named his boy after him. I noticed that the Camero hadn't been moved for several weeks so the boy who drove it wasn't at home. I saw the mother, tooted my horn* and she came out to the box. I asked her if this is from her son, and she said yes. *((I don't get out of my jeep if there is a bunch of farm dogs barking and acting protective.))
I have delivered some weird stuff, including bees. Since the Unibomber, we have been more careful about odd boxes.
Any leak from a box is considered a hazardous material, and will be treated as such.
I think.Net will be a resounding flop. MS is trying to price itself out of the market.
Businessmen do not like being pushed around, and MS is getting pushy with business. I don't think most business would want to trust MS with their data.

IE can stand for Internet Explorer or Industrial espionage. Maybe both.
But then with OSX, install Virtual PC, Xfree86 and run OSX, classic Mac, Windows, and all the BSD apps you want. Then you can boot into LinuxPPC and run Classic MacOS using Mac on Linux. Yes it will run on the new Titainium powerbook.
$99. will buy you Applixware, a good office suite. Maybe Linux developers should move from the fun stuff(another clone of tetris), and over to the practical-- business applications.
I must admit, I like Gnome, but then I find myself going into the KDE menu, and digging out what I need. I like having both for it is the tools that are important.
Bush will be president and he is in the pocket of Microsoft.
The case will be dropped, the Justice department will not enforce anti trust laws. This is the GOP style.
Judging from this question on a Harris poll I took last week, MS is charging full speed ahead.
"If Microsoft developed and released a new Windows operating system next year for personal computers (including Apple), what is the likelihood that
you would want to buy it, either as a new installation or an upgrade?"
I would think that this is why they bought into Corel, and why Corel is considering selling its Linux department.
Much of the new tech took place outside the US During the eighties when we were obsessed with buying other companies, not improving our technology. the Japanese and Euros were building new machines and technologies during that time.
We put ourselves deep in debt during this feeding frenzy, sapping the R&D departments. Instead of putting money into pure research, Reagan put money into tax breaks for the wealthiest, and for weapons systems that the military didn't want or need.
The Break up of AT&T gave a lot of people a chance to enter the market.
Look at what has happened because of the DOJ. Do you think that MS would have allowed Linux, or the Mac exist if there was no case. Do you think there would still be a BeOS if the case had not been brought.
It appears that Bush will be president. This means the case will probably be dropped. Bush's campaign advisor was Ralph Reed, lobbyist for MS. Gates gave over 3.5 million to the Bush campaign.
Marathon started off as a company catering to the music industry in Nashville. Much of the indie music coming out of Nashville is recorded and edited on Macs.
