"MySQL signed a full-scale deal with SCO (including a joint marketing deal )... it wasn't just "porting the software". MySQL jumped into bed with them and snuggled up."
Oh, bullshit. SCO and the OpenServer platform are dieing. This was a quick cash grab and nothing more. --
I'm sorry but I don't think you are not making sense. Even if it was just a quick cash grab, that does not invalidate the post you are responding to. Even if it was a one thing, that doesn't make MySQL AB any less hypocritical.
Besides, how do you know? OpenServer has been dying for over ten years, there is still lots of time for lots more business deals.
My experience with reactos 2.7 is that it doesn't work at all. It won't even install on my very standard PC. Even people who love reactos admit it isn't stable enough for ordinary use. And, react is tryin go catch up with an OS that came out ten years ago.
I hate to post it, but I'm afraid that by the time reactos is anywhere close to NT4, it will be much too late to be of any practicle value. Like freedos or zeta, it will just be a curiosity.
Not from what I can see. I have not investigated it in any depth, but it looks to me like the lowest paid java developer is paid about the same as the highest paid PHP developer.
On denver.craigslist.org, I have seen ads for php/mysql developer jobs starting at $6.50 an hour.
There are greedy and/or stupid people everywhere; and there are scammers everywhere.
And nobody deserves it because they are stupid. What a callous statement. An old lady, who is not as sharp as she once was, get cheated out of her life's saving - HA HA!! She deserves it! Right?
Not that I can expect any honesty, but I'll ask anyway: if you somehow could make that much money *that* easily, would you turn it down? If not, are you greedy?
BTW: I have never been taken by any such scam. Percentage wise, I doubt many people are.
No, Americans do not think that all Africans are running around in grass skirts. But, we do recognize the serious issues of war, disease, porverty, and totaltarianism, that exist in Africa. And, yes, Virgina, it's much worse than the USA.
Msft is scared to death of free software catching on in developing nations. The reason that msft is so scared, is that it really would make sense for developing nations to adopt free software - get started on the right foot.
> SCO's partners are jumping ship and they are paying people to be called partners and sign marketing agreements.
But MySQL AB does not have to join hands with the company that (with msft's help) is dedicated to destroying F/OSS. Do you remember Scox's CEO writing the US congress and declaring that the GPL was unconstitutional?
Why put the time and time, effort, and money, into a degree, which is, at best, optional?
For developers, and admins, the difference between having a BSCS, and not having it, are neglidgable at best.
On the other hand, if you want to be an EE, you must have at least a BSEE. This makes the BSEE worth something.
Besides, if you have an engineering degree, you can all yourself an "engineer" a true professional. As opposed to somebody who does computer work, and is lucky to be employed at all, and is generally treated like the dog who gets kicked around.
So seriously, why chose BSCS over engineering? You can certainly do computer work with engineering degree - if that's what you want.
If you think the news is no big deal, that's fine. But, why are so many posters here enraged?
I'm noticing this trend on slashdot more and more. Some good news for Linux is announced (often no BFD). And many posters here are screaming about how Linux is so inferior to msft.
Frankly, I don't care what desktop you use. I don't care if you don't like Linux. But, it seems strange to me that this sort of news would make so many posters so angry.
You need to more selective with the contracts that you accept. When you are out of work, it is normal to jump at anything, but it can turn out to be a bad idea. You are better off staying home and studying for a new cert to add to your resume.
BTW: monkey can actually pay better than work where you use your human brain. I have made much more setting up POS terminals than configuring a router.
If you go with the W2 companies, you may be able to collect unemployment between jobs.
>> Until I see the first US security cleared person (who can make 20% higher than a regular gov't employee) "transitioned" or "fired", then I'll believe "Job security does not exist anymore".
It happens all the time. I worked for defense contractor that had a fairly small office, about 80 people. They lost a major contract, and over 50% of the staff was laid off. Many of those laid off, including me, held SSBI/top-secret clearances. This happend around 2000.
What's more, many of the cleared people could not find other jobs where they could use their clearance. The defense contractors were just not interested. Now the contractors are begging for people with clearances, but it's too late, they have all expired.
Go figure.
how do contributers know their code was removed?

1) wouldn't this leave the door wide open for litigous bastards like scox?
2) what about those who contributed in ways other than providing code? For example: I provide a lot of valuable testing and feedback because I *think* I am contributing to an open source project. Then the project pulls a 180 degree turn, and tells me: "HA HA your efforts have only severed to make us $$." Doesn't seem fair, and doesn't make me want to contribute to other projects.
At first I thought that scox was just spinning, as scox so often does. I figured scox was calling basic mysql being supported on scox's OS a business relationship.
Then I see the announcement of the business partnership proudly displayed on mysql ab's website.
Unlike some posters on this board, I never hated fox news, until now.

Massachusetts Should Close Down OpenDocument Wednesday, September 28, 2005 By James Prendergast
Should you not, at the very least, have mentioned that the ATL is a Microsoft funded organization? And that the ATL has been caught in pro-Microsoft "astro-turfing" before?
Aside from that, the article was poorly reasoned, and full of outright lies.
Business managers will *always* say there is going to be a shortage of techies, it would be stupid to say anything else. Of course businesses want a glut of techies. From a business standpoint, what else would make sense?
I've worked in IT for over 25 years. I know, IT is not engineering, but the recruiting scam is the same.
As long as I can remember, there are always these articles about the upcoming shortage. Yet, except for the 1995 - 2000 period, there was never a real shortage - usually just the opposite.
Especially nurses, there is hugh shortage of nurses.
Actually, I know the reason why. The medical field is controlled, IT is not.
Just a guess.

MySQL AB is forming a business jpartnership with a company that is dedicated to destroying F/OSS.
It is *not* just a simple porting - it is way beyond that.
MySQL AB proudly displays on their website the news release about scox and mysqlab will be working together ect.

How about where Homer gets in a fist fight with George Bush? I bet it would be even funnier to Arabs if was GWB.

I am not sure you get "meaningful support" from proprietary companies either. If you do, it'll cost an arm and a leg.
Althougth enterprise redhat does cost, it doesn't cost much, and their support easily compares to proprietary companies.
I'm not sure if that applies to vi. I use vi, along with other editors, on both the windows side, and the linux side.
If you are just a point-n-click desktop user, not a developer, or admin, I suppose there is not much use for vi.
But, it is handy to know some vi, if you are working on NIX box with no GUI. I also use vi on old dos boxes.
IMO: vi is nice tool to have around. Although, it may not replace your favorite IDE or wordprocessor.

According to this CEO, if I am paid $50K to write an application that makes $1MM; then the company keeps all the profits.
But, if I'm paid $50K to write an application for which the company is sued for $1MM; then the company accepts none of the risks.
Sure, that seems fair - but only to a CEO.

I haven't tried sqlite myself. But I think it looks promising.

Disgraceful.
Why does slashdot consider Paul Murphy's rantings relevant? The guy is a complete idiot.
You might as well make a news story based on the rantings of the crazy bag bag lady who stands on the corner and screams at people who pass by.

An ex-Fox News viewer.
I know msft lovers who use firefox, and wouldn't dream of using anything else as their primary browser.
The reason, of course, is security. Firefox takes it seriously, msft does not.

But, there are only so many jobs like that.
And, these day, even fewer contractors want to pay the $25K or so it takes to clear somebody.
By the way, I had a TS clearance. Didn't keep me from getting laid off, and it didn't help me get another job.
