  4. The same for the cell phone service industry on Disconnecting · · Score: 1

My lazy friend was with Voicestream and didn't like the phone and service. He switched over to Nextel but never discontinued his Voicestream service. When I was over his apartment for his birthday, I found his phone and found he was making payments on two cell bills a month and called up support to kill Voicestream.

They kept me on hold for a little bit before I spoke with a CSR who I explained my lazy friend's situation. They asked "Are you sure? Would you like to transfer service to someone else?". They couldn't actually terminate the service so I was put on hold again for a few minutes and transferred me to someone else who wanted to give me a few months free service and a new phone. I took ~20 minutes but I finally got my friend's Voicestream phone disconnected.

I like my Voicestream service and Nokia phone.

  7. Communicate under the water? on Twin Robots Scope Out Titanic, Europa Next? · · Score: 1

Gee, we've never been able to communicate underwater, have we? The hydrobots could talk to each other via sound/sonar. Water is actually conductive to radio waves, but it depends on the frequency. Our submarines get messages via ELF and VLF (extra low frequencies and very low frequencies) bands.

It does sound complex, but I have faith the intelligence can be coded. I don't think it can be too hard to program one hydrobot to take pictures while the other calculates how the light should best illuminate the subject matter.

  8. They're appropriating the money on Twin Robots Scope Out Titanic, Europa Next? · · Score: 1

  9. Europa is over an hour away (by light/radio waves) on Twin Robots Scope Out Titanic, Europa Next? · · Score: 1

The delay they are speaking of is the distance between Europa and Earth. It's probably over an hour delay between Jupiter and Earth. It would be like controlling remote control cars in a race track with a rather bad reaction time.

  10. NASA already has that base covered on Twin Robots Scope Out Titanic, Europa Next? · · Score: 2, Informative

NASA is already making sure that they do not contaminate Mars/Europa/etc with probes. In fact, they have been thinking about that since 1999. Check out http://centauri.larc.nasa.gov/outerplanets/Europa_ PPR.pdf for a rather laborious read.

  11. Europa has liquid ocean due to Galileo Probe on Twin Robots Scope Out Titanic, Europa Next? · · Score: 3, Informative

The gravitational field probe on Galileo measured Europa to be "mostly rock, with an outer shell of water about 60 miles thick." Other instruments gave readings that supported oceans under Europa's surface. The near-IR spectrometer found evidence of salts and sulfuric acid that came out of cracks on the ice. The magnetometer reported changes in Europa's magnetic field which scientists say to resemble a salty liquid ocean.

  12. NASA has the Europa Orbiter scheduled on Twin Robots Scope Out Titanic, Europa Next? · · Score: 3, Informative

In 2008, NASA is currently planning to launch a probe to the Jupiter system called the Europa Orbiter. Its objectives are to determine the presence of or the absence of an Europan subsurface ocean, to find out where exactly is this ocean and to understand how the surface features formed. The Europa Orbiter will also find candidate-landing sites for missions to Europa's surface.

I suspect a fair number of people never try Linux or one of the BSDs because they're moderately happy with AOL as an ISP, and switching OSes would mean switching ISPs at the same time. A shame that AOL doesn't make this kind of information more easily available.

Probably very few people using AOL would consider playing with *nix. If you're playing with other operating systems, you've probably already outgrown AOL. You're not burning ISOs from Redhat that you downloaded via AOL/dialup. If you're on AOL, you're happy and content and most probably don't want to be switching ISPs or playing with a new OS. Besides, just because you're on a new OS, doesn't mean you have to get rid of your M$ partition and AOL as your dialup. People can explore the goodness of *nix on that old computer in the closet they feel bad about donating to the Salvation Army.

The AOL protocal was a nice reverse engineering hack. Nice work fellows. AOL didn't make it more freely available because it was a proprietary technology. They'd prefer to keep it to themselves or license it out.. otherwise they would have used a published standard.

lyrics.ch was a great tool. I'm a poet (of sorts) and a musical artist. Not giving my audience access to my material doesn't make sense. Artists produce art to be enjoyed by others and to get themselves off.

By making the art harder to obtain keeps the audience from enjoying the art. It doesn't make sense. It's too ironic. It's not like the artist is going to be making much money selling song books and lyric books.
