I'm a starving college student that knows the law. Even $81 for an 'upgrade' to WinXP Pro is outside of my pocketbook. I also appreciate the freedom of GPL'ed and other Open Source software. Technical problems I can solve -- I was an IT professional. I can choose which distro I want, free as in beer, or for what I would consider a reasonable price (such as the price of a video game; $30 to $50). A lot of things you get what you pay for, but I feel MS rips me off.

Yeah it has some downfalls, but out of all the choices available, Gentoo suits me best. In the future should I find something better, then I'll switch.

To be honest, the closed-source drivers are *better* than what FOSS alternatives offer at this time for Nvidia and ATI. ("But they close their specs!" -- yes they do, but you're geeks right?) If you use a particular card because there are just FOSS drivers avaialable, that's one thing -- if you're deciding to cut out functionality for open drivers, that's totally philisophical and not a technical decision. For those who actually play games on Linux (or FreeBSD in compatibility mode), those evil closed source drivers sure kick the stuffing out of anything in the FOSS community.

If you want to see a shift towards FOSS drivers, the DRI project would appreciate your help. If you want Free to dominate, you need to give people a better decision. Mod me down if you will as anti-FOSS, but I'm not going to sugar coat it.

Crude oil still needs to be refined. Supply like this can be as tightly controlled as OPEG since the process is under patent -- unless someone ELSE finds a way that is not under the patent, and production can meet or exceeed OPEG -- not to mention REFINERIES need to be placed under more competition -- don't count on artificial crude oil to lower prices any time soon.

Here's motovation for you -- criticism. As part of the motovation in Open Source is recognition, the last thing you want is your project to be seen as "This is why you shouldn't use Open Source". On my project I hold everyone to a high standard of quality. This is a high expectation, but a reasonable one if F/OSS wants to make a place in Joe User's machine. I have my family using certain F/OSS on their machines, not because of ideology, but because it's good software. I think that is what the author of the article was trying to get it with "Religious Blindness". "Use Free Software, because it's Free!" imho is an act of faith than an act of judgement.

Mod me down if you will, but I felt it needed to be said.

Is that is it made for pen and paper. Seriously, my project has somewhat of a pen & paper combat and statistic system, but in the end, we're not going to bog the players down in it. Sure there will be some stats visible to the end user, but instead of having "OK Roll to see if you hit!" we'll likely let the user do armed combat. Let the machine calculate weither it can make a block, or have a percentage for taking 1/2 damage and the like.

Don't get me wrong, NWN is a great example of how to put D&D as a video game -- but pen-and-paper games is only best with pen-and-paper the majority of the time. Plus you just can't get a true experience of sitting down with your buddies and having a sadistic GM. ;)
