what?!? alt+f4 isn't an intuitive enough a key command for "close window"?
I love it when linux geeks discuss usability. Not that the otiginal poster mentioned linux users... I just think/.'ers talking about usability is always funny.
And what's there to replace them that's worth anything? The current crop of open source graphics apps just aren't up to the task of efficient generation of print or web graphics. I mean the GIMP has virtually no support for the CMYK color space yet. A huge glaring hole in it's overall usefulness.
Give em what for, Macromedia. Destroy each other. Adobe is quite replacable by open source counterparts, and.. Well.. The only thing I'll miss about Macromedia are those funny anti bin Laden animations everyone makes.
Are you nuts, man!?!?! I might agree that there are open source web authoring alternatives to Adobe products, but the GIMP is no replacement for Photoshop. Where are the open source versions of InDesign, Illustrator, AfterEffects and Type Manager? They don't exist in any professional capacity. Sure, there Scribus and Killustrator, but those apps are mere toys compared to their commercial brethren.Where are the open source versions of Flash and Director? Again, they don't exist.
Linux and related open source projects are very important. Don't get me wrong, but until there are commercial quality publishing, illustration, vector animation and image editing apps (that at least have rudimentary support for CMYK color!), Adobe and Macromedia will be the leaders in design and multimedia software development.
Well, I used to work for an agency that did lots of video and multimedia for Intel. Of course all of it was designed on Macs.
We made videos and Flash pieces and web sites all about their digital cameras, internet terminals, web cams etc. So yeah, they had a lot consumer devices, many of which have yet to see the light of day. Other than the Intel brand, these things really had no compelling reason to be puchased.
Intel's a chip company. They aren't creative enough to really compete in the consumer/"digital hub" arena. This is all probably for the best.
I know Mac and Windows and have used Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Flash, XPress, Freehand, Illustrator and all other standards on both Platforms and while, yes, I can do the job in Windows, I can always get it done faster on a Mac. Always. Font management and PostScript implementation in Windows is just awful and don't even get me started on color management.
As a contractor, I'll use whatever platform my employer requires me to work on, but give me a Mac and I can get creative work done faster. Period.
What exactly do you call Gnome and GTK? I have it in use by morons, idiots, and people that seem to have an I.Q. of less than 40 (sales people, Marketing people, Human Resources people)
Again, until the Linux mindset changes to developing for end users needs from "My way or the highway", it's never going to be a truly viable desktop environment. If you were my IT guy and told me that I had to use Linux, I'd laugh in your face and explain in depth why I need a Mac to get my work done (I'm a graphic/web designer) and go straight to my manager and explain my case in terms of how it will affect my efficiency and the department's bottom line.
All you're proving with your statements is that you think you can train monkeys to do your bidding, thus expanding your ego.
And how are Linus' cool aid drinkers any less fanatical than us Jobs fanatics?
It's a freaking OS written by a company that spends A LOT of money developing their user experience. By ripping off the Aqua UI wholesale, you marginalize the distintiveness of what Apple has created.
Candy colored buttons is not all that is required to create a good GUI. It actually requires a great deal of thought about how end users will actually use the tool set. Until Linux developers drop their arrogant attitude toward people who USE computers for work, education and entertainment, we'll never see Linux as a viable desktop OS.
Oh and what are KDE and Gnome? Completely original desktop environments? Come on, man. They are so Win 95 it's unbelievable!
Xerox gave them explicit permission to use their GUI concepts because they didn't really see a use for it. Apple did and now we have a desktop metaphor that's ubiquitous. Where would your precious X Windows desktops be if Apple hadn't popularized the GUI... or USB or FireWire and on and on. Apple popularizes a lot of stuff that eventually becomes commodity hardware or UI conventions years before the other manufacturers or software developers will even climb into the ring.
Amen! I get really tired of the OS community bashing Apple at every chance they get and then whining when Apple says, "Hey, don't rip off our UI look and feel."
Aqua is more than just the widgets and the look of the screen. It's the entire organization of the desktop environment as well as the on-screen display tool. Apple has finally created a fully functional and USABLE GUI and bolted it on top of BSD. I like Gnome and KDE, but as far as fully usable and intuitive desktop environments go, they've got a lot of work to do just to catch up with ease of use of even Mac OS 9's desktop. The reason we Apple people are so fervent in defending our OS is that the GUI has been so well engineered from a usability standpoint. My mom learned countless applications because the conventions of the desktop environment carry over very smoothly into the third party applications she uses. The metaphor stays in tact. Windows is getting there, but still uses many quirky and unintuitive conventions. KDE and Gnome aren't bad, but it's very obvious that the entire desktop metaphor has been developed for a very select group of end users; programmers and network administrators. You don't utilize your desktop as a workspace as much as you "administer" your desktop in these environments.
Don't get me wrong, I use KDE a lot on my Linux box, more for learning than anything else because I make a living as a graphic artist and the tools I need to do my job efficiently and effectively just aren't available for Linux just yet. And until Quark, Macromedia and Adobe embrace Linux, I won't be able to use Linux as a working platform. The GIMP and Killustrator just don't cut it in the professional graphics arts space yet.
Everything you'd really need to know you can find here. There is a surprisingly large number of apps out there for OS X. VersionTracker has a really large and up to date database of apps coming over to OS X.
I know people hate it when Photoshop is used as a benchmark, but the AltiVec co-processor really makes PS fly... especially on a dual 800! I can;t wait to see a native OS X version of PS running on a dul G4!
The G4 is a 32-bit chip with a 128-bit vector co-processing unit.
The really cool thing about the G5 is that it will be a 64-bit chip with complete backwards compatibility with 32-bit applications.

Hardly traits of people who have been brainwashed!
Granted, I do not share the same spiritual beliefs as my friends. Most think I have a very depressing take on spirituality and the uniuverse, but they accept that I "believe" my views to be true to some extent and I respect their individual beliefs. We're all entitled to our beliefs, right or wrong or somewhere in between.
The very fact that someone can claim to know TRUTH is just absurd. Human beings are finite creatures with finite reasoning capabilities and primarily communicate via an imperfect method... language. I believe that when we die, well, that's it, our molecular makeup goes back to the earth and that's that. I have NO PROOF WHATSOEVER that this is true. I merely believe, have "faith", that this is true. There is lots of "empirical" proof that leads me to believe it's true, but I can't definitively know. Just as I really do not know that there isn;t a god, or gods or goddesses or you name it. Personally, I think a fitting application of justice might be to cut off the offending organization(s) and/or national body(ies) off from the rest of the world. Force them to be completely self sufficient. No importing or exporting allowed. No financial support. How long would it be before there was famine and plague and the citizenry of the country begin to suffer and perish? Would the people sit there and let it happen or would they rise up against the organization(s) and/or government(s) responsible for their misery?
Granted, again, innocent people suffer and die in this scenario, but it would be because the government/organization was unable to meet the basic needs of their citizenry and not an attack by the US/NATO.
I'm still not sure how I feel about the above scenario, or if it's really even possible, but it would make the organizations/nations responsible for these acts of terrorism accountable to their own citizenry for punishment. It could also show the reponsible parties just how interconnected the world is today and that if they don't want to play nice with the rest of the world, why should the rest of the world help them meet even their most civic needs?
Again, I don't know about this, just thinking out loud and trying to make sense of things.
I'm having a hard time believing that here in good ole polite Seattle, Mosques are receiving death threats and are being vandalized.
