I agree. I've never understood people that feel the "need" to do some work.
Work is to get money. Money is to pay for things you want. If you just work for the sake of work and don't spend any of the money on things you want, what's the point?
These people that keep their janitorial jobs after winning the lottery are beyond me. If I was an instant billionaire I wouldn't work another day in my life. I might do things that are "productive" such as writing some code, playing guitar, educating myself; but not because I feel a need to be productive, but rather because I enjoy these activities.
Work is just a means to an end. All work and no play is stupid.
If you choose to live in common ownership isn't it still, basically, capitalism? In that type of opt-in system you still have to choose to give "your" private property to the group.
Actually, I can think of a much more prevalent example, most married couples. My wife and I life in a state of common ownership between two people. But we still have private property, we choose to live in this state.
Couldn't it be that Android moves faster than IOS, meaning that handsets will become "outdated" faster?
Since IOS5 basically catches IOS up on things Android already did (such as pull down notifications), you could actually say that IOS5 = Android 2.4, meaning that the Nexus One is on the same level (software wise) as iPhone 3GS.
You could ask the same thing about computers. When's the last time you NEEDED to upgrade your computer to play a game? Lets say the PS3 lasts 6-7 years. A gaming PC made 6 years ago can still play all the latest games, at least on the low setting, which is equivalent to playing the game on a console.
The great thing about PC's is that you have the option to upgrade in order to get better graphics, but you are not required to upgrade. You can always play on the lower settings if you want.
On a console you are forced to play on low settings, whether you can afford to upgrade or not.
The Wii-U is Nintendo's PS3/360. The Wii is the same generation as the original XBOX.
You could argue that console generations are split solely by years, and not by console power, but if you do make that argument you will have to also agree that there have been a ton of different console generations, since the consoles often release one or two years apart.
If you claim that time is the only determining factor for console generation then the PS2 would be part of generation x, and the gamecube and XBOX would be generation x+1, since they came out a year after the PS2.
Exactly this. No one has been able to yet prove that MSG has any negative side-effects, and it can be used as an alternative to salt, which may or may not be bad for you also (depending on whatever the latest study claims).
I do think that some people might be allergic to MSG and get headaches from it, but people can be allergic to anything. My mother-in-law is allergic to lemons, but I don't think that lemons are bad because of it.
I played Atlantica (among other f2p games) which basically had exactly what WoW is adding now, although the game was f2p so it was at least somewhat excusable, I can't believe they have the balls to do this for a p2p game.
Basically what happens is the item will be worth a ton when it first comes out. It won't tank quickly, but it will gradually become worth less and less as the new "shininess" factor wears off.
Then Blizzard will replace the item with a new "more shiny" item. The current shiny item will drop significantly, and the new item will be worth a ton. If Blizzard chooses to discontinue sales of shiny item 1 when shiny item 2 is released, shiny item 1 will increase in price in a week or so, before going back down to average levels. If they keep selling all the shiny items at once the older ones will continue to slowly decline until they reach a fairly low price that will end up as the "Standard" price for any non-new item-mall item.
Despite this meaning that I will have to buy a new phone in 2013 or lose 4g access, I'm still very happy with it.
Sprint is by far the cheapest cellular provider so I have no intentions of switching. This means that my next phone will have faster and more reliable internet. It's worth needing to buy a new phone as far as I'm concerned.
It's a good thing that was just ONE of the money red-flag raising permissions for this app. Even if he doesn't have a clue what "write access point name settings" means, he should know what " Services that cost you money: Directly call phone numbers and send SMS messages" means.
I also think it's pretty disingenuous to consider an "80 year old non-technologist" as the mass market. I think the mass market for smartphones is probably the under 65 crowd, and while no where near the average slashdot readers level of competency your average college age student is actually pretty well familiar with technology.
You didn't actually look before replying did you...?
I've installed about 100 apps on my phone and I have never seen a single app that had this many permissions.
Okay, so you download your third-party Chinese app store (bad idea in the first place, from my experience Chinese web sites are terrible for malware).
Next, you download an e-book reader. Now, off the top of my head I can think of a few permissions an e-book reader might need. Perhaps full internet access, modify SD contents, prevent phone from sleeping, and maybe a few more, but that's about it.
Now look at some of the permissions for this e-book reader, they are very obviously not needed for an e-book reader:
1) Edit, read, or receive SMS/MMS. 2) Read and write contact data. 3) Directly call phone numbers and send SMS messages. 4) Read system log files 5) Write access point name settings
I can see a situation where something ambiguous that might actually be needed such as "full internet access" could be exploited, but this definitely isn't one of those situations.
I have the primary programs pinned to the task bar, and rarely need to find a new one.
I guess I wouldn't have enough room on my task bar if I had to pin every video game I play, but I launch all my games through steam so as long as steam is pinned I'm good.
One thing they really need to add is something I used to use a lot in True Launch Bar (they should add this to Ubuntu also). True Launch Bar let me pin folders to the task bar, and they functioned as drop down menus. So I had a single "folder" with all my game shortcuts in them, I had a "Tools" folder with stuff like calculator and other stuff you would normally find in "accessories."
I found this to be a much better solution than the start menu. The start menu still existed, but for the most part the only time I used it was when I had just installed a new program and needed to drag a shortcut onto one of my task bar menus.
Are you saying that governments are the only international actors that matter?
IOs matter very much in our present international system. Anwar al-Awlaki was a member of an international non-state military force, that has declared war against the United States. He is no different than any other enemy soldier.
I agree. I've never understood people that feel the "need" to do some work.

Yes. I have to throw in another vote for games.
My laptop that I take to school and use for notes/programming runs Linux and works great, much better than it did when I had Windows on it in fact.
But my desktop PC at home runs Windows 7 because I built it for gaming.
Unless DX11 is going to run under Linux my desktop is going to run Windows.
Chrome, whatever the latest version is.
It works on both my desktop running Windows 7 and my laptop running Ubuntu 11.04.
Both are using Chrome though.
Doesn't wikipedia work because there is a few people (the elite) who have the power to "lock" a page if the "stupid people" mess it up too much?
Are you using an out of date browser or something? It goes strait to the G+ Pepsi page for me.
This is exactly what I thought...
They're asking BitTorrent to block Pirate Bay?

You could trade Pokemon through the infrared port IIRC.

You should have had him get a Nexus S.

Hopefully you would be grandfathered in if they raised the rates.... hopefully.

Besides I think they already made a phone specifically for 80 year olds: http://www.greatcall.com/
My mom wouldn't be using a third party Chinese app store.
She also wouldn't be downloading some random unheard of book reader, she would be using something she has heard of such as kindle or nook.
And lastly she would probably be alarmed by the bold lettered "services that cost you money" part of the permissions.
Your Mom may be an idiot but that doesn't mean everyone else who isn't tech savvy is.
You didn't actually look before replying did you...?

Interesting... the box that my Nexus S came in looks exactly the same as those boxes as well...
You could just download WoW and skip the 3-day limit. SW:TOR is just WoW with a different skin anyways. It's not like they're doing anything original.
This is basically how it works for me.

I believe this is in anticipation for when they take over Motorola and have multiple phones to sell.
There's a limit if you use the wireless hotspot tethering thing.
As far as using data on the actual phone there is no limit.
