If you live anywhere near Medford, OR (Serviced by Charter Communications) or probably any area served by Charter, stealing cable is a no go. They make very regular (bi weekly) drive bys and they are very through. They wave this magic wand around that makes funky noises and they can tell if you're pirating cable very easily. If you are, they cut your line. Every time I've tried, they cut me off within a couple weeks. They finally put a block on the stuff. I've yet to cancel cable, split the cable modem line, and get free analog cable but if it's possible here that would be kinda neat..

That's probably why Charter also charges you $10+ more a month if you do not have cable tv already. This covers the cost for the idiots/theives who do steal cable...

I use Charter. They just introduced a new tier. They have for $37.99 or so, you can get 768Kbps/128Kbps or for $50 or so, you can get 1.5MB/400Kbps. I think $50 or so is fair for now, but it sure seems like every couple months the price goes up..

.. and they could get away with it here because DSL sucks, and the least expensive DSL here from a 'local' provider (not counting Qwest w/ MSN) is around $75+ and that's not even 1MB down.

This might sound hard to believe and I don't know if it's Charter Communications own tech support or it's contracted out, but here in the northwest (Medford, OR), their customer service/response time ROCKS. I called to up my speed. I called the local #, hit 1, hit 1, hit 2.. got a rep in like 2 minutes. I told her to give me the 1.5MB package, she said ok.. we waited about a minute, she said cycle the modem.. I did, I had a new package. I've also called to see why my mail doesn't work and they usually always tell you if there is an outage..

Either way, they are always nice so far.. although I haven't called to cancel yet, but that's because it's the only high speed joint in time and at this point, they've been nice..

I'm not so sure about this. I signed up for AOL just to mess around for a few hours and that I did. After about 3 hours, I called to cancel my service. The lady on the other end said, 'Mr. Ryan, you've only had AOL for 3 hours, are you sure you don't want it?' I told her yes, I was sure I didn't want it. She asked why and I said, "It freezes my computer." She said, "Oh, well let's reboot and see if we can fix it." I said, "Mam, (more like hey bitch), I DO NOT WANT AOL." She said, "Ok, How about another 3 months free and you can decide if you like it?" Getting frustrated, I said, "Fine." I hung up.

2 months later (to make SURE I canceled while it was free..) I called to cancel service. The lady said, "Ok it's canceled." I was like, wow that was quick... and then I got a statement a few months later and AOL had been hitting it for the last 3 months I thought my service was canceled. I had to sign an affidavit to get the charges removed. On top of that, Visa issued me a new credit card #, you'd think that would stop it. Nope, if you've ever given a company access to your CC #, they can still hit it up. Whether it's legal or not is another question. Also, you'd think with a NEW CC #, they wouldn't be able to bill me, right? Wrong. They can. Good luck with this. I finally contacted AOL, Clout Visa Card, Better Buisness Beaureu, and the Oregon attorney general. Guess what I got then? Not one credit for all charges, but two! They actually credited me. AOL HATES the BBB and probably really hated my Attorney General who demanded a reason on why they did this to me. I would suggest *everyone* here contact your State AG and the BBB, it got me results in literally a week..

Then somewhere else they say up too 1.5MB/s. I've yet to see anywhere near 1.5MB/s. I don't know if this is unique to Oregon or what not, but it sucks to say the least. Charter Pipeline seems to suck in general, I get disconnected completely atleast once a night, and every time I go back to using their DNS servers, I get killed off, so their DNS is fucked. On top of that, their DNS servers are on the same fscking class c. Lovely! Anyone else hate Charter?

Atleast with my ISP, InternetCDS.com you can't get wireless unless you fail to qualify for DSL. On top of that, my ISP uses shoddy software combined with shitty hardware, so you end up getting 40 people on one port designed for 20 and time sharing doesn't know how to divvy that up, so everyone gets screwed.

The OTHER ISP here that offers wireless is Computer Country and they use frequency hopping. If you must get wireless, CHECK TO SEE IF THEY HAVE FREQUENCY HOPPING! If not, DON'T GET IT. I don't get more than 5kb/s on any download and I should be getting 250KB/s..

Anyway, I think wireless will grow as well because there is no need for a phone line and it is fairly reliable, when you have a decent ISP running it.
