  1. Re:Massive change on Super-Accurate GPS Chips Coming To Smartphones In 2018 (ieee.org) · · Score: 1

Same here. The current crop of Garmin watches has a pretty poor GPS accuracy for runners (still good enough for cyclists or vehicles since they are moving at much higher speeds). I hope that Garmin gets on onboard with this,

  2. The obvious use case for this is the fitness market. If you use something like Strava, right now you need a fitness device + a phone capable of talking to the fitness device. Once a fitness device has a dellular capability, it can get your running/cycling segments, upload activities, do live tracking without needing a phone to talk to the servers. This will be a real killer for the Garmins and the Polars of this world. The other good use case would be health monitoring - for the diabetics, etc. There are probably many, many others.

As a runner of many years, I find it that covering 1 mile by foot costs most people about 100 kcals. So run 5 miles - you need 500 kcals give or take a bit.

No wrist worn HR monitor will give you an accurate reading. Ideally a HR monitor should be worn below the rib cage, or you can get some fairly reliable readings from various optical HR monitors worn either right above or right below the elbow.

Of course. An hour at the gym (assuming that it is spent doing moderate weight lifting, etc and maybe 10-15 mins of cardio) will burn you maybe 500 kcals. That's not gonna cut it. Instead go run very slowly for an hour - best with a HR monitor, making sure to stay in zone 2 all the time. You will burn closer to 900-1000 kcals. For most people that will mean a small negative balance of their caloric intake.

This is actually a great point. Back in the day when the Ottomans ran most of the Middle East, the religious institutions were tightly controlled and becoming a qualified mufti was a process not too dissimiliar to that of the medical school of today. In other words, mufti were few and they basically stuck with the rather traditionalist interpretations of the Koran. Not too surprisingly, their messages were far from the extremes of today. However, once the British and the French took over in the 1920s, the process of forming religious schools became more open, and as a consequence we now have all sorts of crazy shiat being preached by anyone with any kind of mental disorder.
