  1. Don't Be Evil... on Google Photos Now Recognizes Your Pets (techcrunch.com) · · Score: 1

In choosing Don't Be Evil as it's famous motto (history will judge if they failed that test), Google neglected other, less obvious aspects. One that comes to mind right now is Don't Be Creepy; while less fraught with meaning, it's much easier to judge... and they're failing.

  2. Enabling location services per use on Uber Says It'll Stop Tracking Riders After They're Dropped Off (usatoday.com) · · Score: 3, Insightful

The MakerBot is like the Altair 8800... It's works, most of the time, but it's complicated and slow, and it's produce is not that useful. and... what am I really supposed to do with it??

The Altair 8800 came out in 1974, but it took another ~10 years for home computers to really take off... I'm sure that in less then 10 years we'll all have some kind of 3D printer at home.

  5. Let me foresee what will happen... on Vladimir Putin Is Replacing Microsoft Programs With Domestic Software (bloomberg.com) · · Score: 3, Insightful

    Let me foresee what will happen... Putin will replace Microsoft programs with ripped off open-source software with minor UI and major back-doors updates;
Then, with great patriotic pride, will pronounce the motherland's major step towards cleansing itself from western spying and corruption.

  6. I'm not supporting his long-dead file-sharing business, although that's just a symptom of a deprecated business model that should die (U.S music industry in its current form).
I am supporting the fight against corporate tailor-made-laws overreaching across international borders where they should have no mandate, and blowing a minor case beyond all proportions.

  7. Even though the man himself, by all accounts, is a loud-mouthed, megalomaniac, international jerk ... I do believe his fight against U.S laws and its publicity is doing the world a service.
So ... Go Kim, I'm for you.

  8. One of the most annoying features in a great tool on 20% of Scientific Papers On Genes Contain Conversion Errors Caused By Excel, Says Report (winbeta.org) · · Score: 1

    Excel's auto-formatting causes me no-end of grief.
I receive technical sheets of tools from clients, and if you don't know how to process them, Excel will trim leading zeros from manufacturer part numbers and abbreviate long numbers to scientific notation and will convert sizes marked in fractions into dates . . . and in general turn data into meaningless mess.
And before you jump and yell at me that Excel isn't the right tool for data management - I know . . . There's no avoiding it, everyone out there uses excel.

I know all the moves and switches and tricks to avoid that, but for the life of me, I don't understand why isn't there a simple switch in the settings that will disable all that auto-formatting crap once and for all.

Driving is all about having absolute control over your vehicle. From the minute we get behind the wheel, we're taught that a moment's loss of control is fatal (with good reason).
For an experienced driver, surrendering that control is nightmare-inducing... For myself, the first time I used cruise control was unsettling - it felt like the car was getting out of hand - it took a while getting used to.
Surrendering control of the brake will be harder.. let alone the wheel itself.

I never said indie music is necessarily of higher quality, when anyone can sing to their comp and upload it to YouTube in a sec, the heaps pile up pretty high... but at least it's more diverse crap.

  23. The corporate industry just stagnates music on Steve Albini: The Music Industry Is a Parasite -- and Copyright Is Dead · · Score: 4, Insightful

I wholly agree with Albini, the corporate music industry as a whole just stagnates music. The industry cherry-picks a tiny few young presenters, suit them with what is believed to be the most likely to succeed set of styles and hype their image beyond all proportion.
And in the background everything that is deemed "not popular/unlikely to succeed" is simply ignored. This how you get crap-loads of songs and music videos that are practically indistinguishable from one another.
Not too long ago music artists earns their living from live performances only, recordings changed that and allowed top performers to become very rich. Nowadays we might see things go full circle... A good artist should be able to make a living off her art, there's no law that says she's supposed to become a millionaire (and certainly not her manager).
Music has been around since humanoids could bang two sticks together and hum along, its not going to disappear -- hurting the industry is not "Destroying Music" like some would want us to believe -- Doing anything to damage the music industry in its current form will only do good for music in the long run.
