That's not the point. He wasn't saying these books taught the basics, and that using them was a waste of time. He was saying the books skipped the basics, and cradled the reader through the hardest part of picking up an instrument. Learning the basics of an instrument, and music, is crucial and incredibly hard. These books generally skip a lot of basic steps in favor of getting the student to make some sound, but in doing so robs the student of a deeper understanding of his/her instrument.
If a violinist learns to play in tune with a tuner, and never learns to adjust his/her tuning for the mood of a piece or for who he/she is playing with, then that approach to tuning is USELESS! What the GP was trying to say is that most of the "Music for Dummies" books don't offer the strong musical foundation required for growth on instrument later on. That is to say, if these 'book students' keep playing for years, they will find themselves held back by shoddy technique and a poor understanding of the subtleties of their instrument. It is not uncommon for musicians to have to 'unlearn' their technique after years of playing, simply because their first instructor didn't notice a critical flaw in their technique (embouchure, grip, etc...).
The article summary refers to "Blaster Master" as "Master Blaster" and then the article says it was a Capcom game, when in reality it was a Sunsoft game.
NES: Blaster Master (I still play this on my NES regularly) Fester's Quest Batman (the first one, by SunSoft) RiverCity Ransom (and Japanese pre/sequels) Ducktales 1,2 Rescue Rangers 1,2
This talks about video game design as if it was just a means of making money.
What about the game itself???
The way I see it, marketing has its place, but video games used to be works of art. This new "revenue-optimizing" approach has killed the artistic side of VG design. When the driving force behind the design of a game isn't entertainment, expression, or innovation what are you creating? A "product" with no direction other than its "target's" wallet.
The music industry is killing creativity in popular music, the movie industry is killing innovation in movies, and now the VG industry is removing the art in VG design.
If it wasn't for the underground/independent scene in video games now, I wouldn't bother playing new titles.
I've always considered the music in the Castlevania series to be a big reason for its success. It has done wonders for creating the unique atmosphere of the game's universe, especially back in the NES days when graphics and gameplay were limited.
It would really be a shame if the movie score fell short of the game scores... (For me, anyway) this would basically mean they'd be totally missing the mark in recreating the Castlevania "experience".
I can vouch that they are in fact based in British Columbia. I work for NRCan and deal with them on a regular basis. Well, I don't actually speak to anyone there, but I send them data to process from one of our stations.
Ok. When I occasionally find myself at that McDonald's it's when I'm going to my once-a-month part-time job. I don't always have reliable internet at work, so I usually check my mail/news and download things before I go to work. Since these work shifts are up to 16 hours long, knowing for sure I can get online just before work is very convenient.
I thought this was mentioned on/. before, but McDonald's offers free Wifi for laptop users anyway. I don't know how widespread this is, but it's already offered in my small town.
The funny thing is that they are supposed to give you a 30min user/pass for while you eat, but somebody screwed it up here. Right now they are giving out a single permanent user/pass combinations instead of temp ones... McDonald's, while out of my way a bit, is still a pretty convenient hotspot for me.
I have a computer that remains in hibernation until it receives network traffic. I have it set up to only wake-on-lan when it receives a magic packet (I configured my router to accept these packets over the internet). So when I need to work on my webprojects I usually run through this:
1. Send magic packet to my home IP (the router takes care of the rest) 2. wait about 20 seconds for my server to awake and acquire an IP 3. go on with my work as if the server had never been down.
I also have the server set to hibernate if it's been idle for 10 minutes, so I don't use very much electricity at all.
...but at that point the phisher would already have your u/p.
If the page with the picture is seperate from the login page, then that gives the phisher time to use the recently acquired information to retrieve the legit picture. All this might seem like a bit of lag to the victim, but nothing too noticable.
Side Note: I find it funny how the guys sig says he's a "REAL American" cause he lives in North America, yet it implies that those in the US aren't real Americans, even though they too live in North America.
I know. He's an idiot.
Remember, however, that I don't give a crap what you call yourself. I'm just saying that it affects others because many people live in AmericaS. Shortening to The People's Rublic of China or The Russian Federation to Russia does not affect other Chinas or other Russias.
Anyway.. I, again, don't care if you guys call yourself America.. I was just trying to clarify that moron's point... (don't ask me why).
Also, the arrogance associated with the US has nothing to do with calling yourselves "America".. it has mostly to do with Bush, Clinton, and Bush.
It must suck to be labeled as arrogant simply because you guys have an idiot President at the moment.
I have one mod point left, but I can't seem to find the "Insane" option.
If you look to the left of the picture, you'll see the tracks from the rover's trip
Those look like transformer tracks to me.

Has anyone tried downloading by the bittorrent yet?
Some of the dummy books may be good, some may be bad, but you said it yourself, there are a lot of bad beginner books out there.
It could also be that the guitar is an instrument suited to be taught by book. Violin, on the other hand, is NOT.

It may still be voluntary today, but who knows what the future will bring?
I, for one, welcome our robot.txt overlords.
Why would it have to be exclusive rights? Couldn't Sega just authorize and supervise the use of the Sonic character for that one game?

Blaster Master
Reply complaining about obvious grammar and spelling mistakes while completely missing the joke.
That's the joke.
from audience: You suck, McBain!
I think he meant "emigration," which is a word.

well, we can only hope!

But Hey, I'm just a music and retro gaming dork.

I'm not sure I can talk too much about it, but feel free to check this out:

I almost just laugh out loud in class!

Consider also that the budget is tight, and win98 liscences are probably plenty (if not free) at most universities, while win2k+ would not be
Use the Wake-on-LAN feature of your network card.
