I totally know what you're saying, but seriously, they could still own the internet like they pretty much do already, and just make a browser that actually lets innovation move forward. Instead, us lowly web developers have to support crappy hacks for 5+ year old technology (*cough* CSS1 let alone 2) that should have been supported by the biggest freaking browser in the world by now. You dont understand how much IE pisses me off.:)
Come on, this is slashdot! The editors, God bless 'em, try their damndest to make the headline as misleading and controversial as possible. Without those fuckers, we wouldn't have the trollfest that everyone currently enjoys day in, day out!
"Technically better" to me means what has better standards support. IE's horribly broken CSS support pisses me off to no end. IE is the reason CSS isn't used on a majority of web sites that would greatly benefit from it. I love CSS and as a developer I am extremely frustrated having to make hacks of SIMPLE SHIT so that it looks correct in IE.
There is nothing IE does that Mozilla can't, except install some sketchy software without your knowledge, or maybe run some ActiveX objects that fuck your computer over.
Are you kidding? The Special Edition, which came with a free headset and bonus dvd with all the tools you need to make mods and maps and tons of tutorial videos, cost $40.
Granted, this sold like hotcakes, and I couldn't get a copy. I settled for the normal edition: $35. Yah, so anyways, I'm totally broke now, because it was so expensive. I couldn't afford rent and so now I live on the street.
Google's a good company. They've never done anything that has raised my eyebrows before in terms of violating someone's privacy, or anything really. It's not like humans are going to scan your emails and decide what ads to put next to them. (Side note: the article was misleading in that it said gmail would place ads IN your email. Pure FUD. They're NEXT TO your email, which is way different). The whole system is automated, just like their AdSense program. It figures out what ads to display based ont he content of the web page.
The only argument that I've heard that makes any sense is if someone is against Gmail beacuse of this ad thing, so they dont sign up for the service, but then all their friends do so when they send email tot hem, their emails are scanned for content, even though they're not signed up with the service. Seriously though who cares. Google's not going to do anything like sell your email content to third party's so they can email your ads and stuff. People need to stop getting their panties all in a knot.
He was saying that what you said is indeed the case. The point was that, what really is worse? Killing someone because you were going to fast or trading music online? Is protecting someone's intellectual property more valuable than someone else's life? I dont think so. And neither did the original poster.
I havent run opera 7, the last time I used it was 6. But I stil have 6 around. I think they're about the same speed. Seriously these days computers are so fast it doesnt even matter anymore. It's like 5 milliseconds vs 6 - you're not going to notice. They're both faster than hell.
However I dont use opera because it renders pages like ass. Maybe version 7 is a lot better but I've just never liked it that much anyways in terms of interface, adn that dreaded banner ad.
When they say the account is frozen, they are talking about your bank account (as well as your paypal account). Search the internet for paypal horror stories or pay a visit to paypalsucks.org. If they freeze your account, and it's your only bank account, guess what? You are absolutely fucked! There is no way for you to get money out of your bank account until paypal unfreezes it. Got rent? Mortgage? Car payment? Too bad. Looks like you're going to be late on those.
Now anyone who's smart, doesn't keep all their money in one account. I have 95% of my money is a savings account, which no one can touch except for me, at the bank window itself. Anyone who's really smart and uses paypal often enough, would open a seperate account specifically for paypal. Now they would have to do what you mention, withdraw everytime you get money in it. So you transfer from paypal to your paypal bank account, then do an online bank transfer from that account to either your "real" account or your savings account. If they freeze your bank account specifically opened for paypal, oh well, no biggie. Fuck 'em and start using a new service:)
I'll be sure to mention that to them as I downgrade
Yes, I'm sure the miserable, horribly underpaid, probably doesnt work for comcast directly, wish they had a better job, customer support rep will really take it to heart.:)
Not that I disagree with what you're saying, but if you knew what it was like to work in a call center...:P
First of all, this isn't new. I got one of these from Comcast back in September, which was 8 months ago.
Second, it does not say you must submit an explanation and apology. You only have to submit something to them if you believe that the file was mistakenly identified.
The only thing this is asking you to do is stop sharing the file. Which is what I did. Comcast is not trying to invade your privacy. And they are most definitely not doing this because they want to, it's because the copyright owner has used the DMCA to force Comcast to notify you of your infringement.
I really wish the editors would look into the details of things like this before submitting a story. It's almost as if they want to post misleading information to make controversy amongst us users and start a heated debate.:P
I read slashdot everyday, maybe I missed the day where we already talked about VoteHere and Dan Spillane??? Seriously though, it's not like thid is Diebold. Give some background on who the hell these people are. What I made sure NOT to do was go to his web site, as I knew there would be comments in this story with links to other stories about the IPO.

Ya know, I really hate front page stories like this. There's an update on the situation? Tell us what it is! There's an interesting post on a mailing list? How about a snippet!?!
I dont want to have to RTFA to decide if it's somethign I care about or not. Give me a summary and from there I will decide. In this case, I decided I did not care based on the poor summary and did not RTFA.:P
I'm sorry, your comment is very well informed but it's just funny to hear people talking about toasters like that....

Plus the demand for toasters is pretty constant. People buy toasters when their old one breaks. They dont rush out to buy a 5% faster "upgraded" toaster just because it's there.
I didnt notice it was editable. Unfortunately I have a feeling that they dont store the terms of service for each user when they click agree. Worth a shot though. A million dollars per nanosecond... man you are already richer than every person on the planet combined!!
Tell me how this is different from the third party scanners being used constantly to scan for spam and viruses in pretty much every email sent throughout the entire world? Oh, because it's Google and they're using the content of your email to generate ads? They say no human is going to read through the emails, as obviously that would take WAY too long and also be unethical. It's completed automated and does not violate your privacy. Stop being stubborn.

The thing that I'M concerned about is if they pull a similar move that Apple did with mac.com accounts. "Oh yah they'll be free forever", then two years later, once everyone is hooked on free @mac.com email addresses, they turn around and say they're going to charge $99 dollars per year. Excuse me? I dont think so. My mac.com email was my main email for nearly two years and as soon as they pulled that shit, I cancelled my account, bought my own domain, and now have free email for life. Apple was hoping that users would pay because they had been using that email address as their main email and wouldnt want to switch. Well it didnt work on me and yo should have read the mac message boards when this happened. People were pissed!
I do think Gmail is a cool idea. Being able to store a gig of email so you (as an average user anyways) never have to delete email and have the best search engine in the world to search through old emails is awesome. But what if their idea is to get you hooked so you wont ever want to give it up, then start charging a fee for it? Even though it is worth probably $100/year, I would tell them to shove their bill up their ass and move on. This is why I won't use Gmail.

Autozone used to be a totally SCO shop for all of their point of sale systems.
2. Autozone converted to Linux, and IBM made them do so
IBM had nothing to do with their switching to linux.
The original poster who posted points 1 and 2 (as well as two others), was not saying This is what happened, I know because I am uber-smart slashdot nerd, he's saying that that is what SCO is claiming, and as many others have pointed out, SCO is full of crap.:) As evidenced by the post at groklaw that everyone keeps linking to.
