Now, I'm not going to argue that Comcast service doesn't suck liquid monkey ass, because, well, it does.

I hate big bad corporations as much as the next guy, but I've had comcast cable internet for around 3 years now and am very satisfied with the service. This is in Oregon, maybe in different areas of the country they're a lot worse. I've never had a "real" outage, eg where I had to call tech support to get things going again. Simply power cycling the cable modem and/or computer has always solved my problems. And 3 Mbps is plenty fast for me, and I download a lot of stuff.

My only complaint is how much they've jacked up the price since they bought it from AT&T. But all thigns considered, 55 dollars a month isnt too expensive for what I get. Although $26/month for 25Mbps in Japan certainly makes me envious. :)

That's just silly though. I would be MORE offended by someone calling me directly to complain about content on my web site than anyone could possibly be offended by what's on all of my web sites (and trust me, there is some very offensive material there, no, not porn). MAYBE a phone number, ok, but no one needs my personal address. If someone was offended enough, they could hunt me down and kill me. That's kinda scary

I'd probably rather have a person file a complain with whatever govt. entity would deal with such a thing. People get offended by the stupidest shit these days, I think the govt. would put the smack down and tell them to shut the fuck up, unless it was actualyl legitimately offensive, which you know 99% percent of the time it wouldn't be.

Luckily all my domains were registered several years ago when I lived in another city. You think I'm going to take the time to update the whois information? HA. Fuck that.

For that matter, phone numbers are the same way. By default, your number, name, and address are public info. One must pay extra to get an unlisted number.

By default, yes they are, that doesnt make the default a good thing though, does it? I used to have Qwest, who we've all heard wonderful things about, they charge 75 cents per month for an unlisted number. They say it "costs them extra money" to not include your name/number in the phone book. Yah right, bastards, it takes the click of a mouse to check that box that says "Dont include in phonebook" and it's done.

Too bad their "hugely improved" interface doesn't work with Opera, Links, Dillo, older versions of Mozilla, and countless other browsers.

That's true. One of the big problems these days is there's only so much you can do with plain jane HTML. Gmail's interface "experience" depends heavily on javascript. And they've done a good job of trying to support as many modern browsers as possible. Mozilla, Firefox, IE, and Safari all work flawlessly. And those are the main browsers on the "main three" operating systems: Windows (IE), Mac (Safari), and Linux (Mozilla/Firefox). This probably accounts for 98-99% of all users out there. That's pretty damn good if you ask me.

I haven touched Opera since the 6.0 days, one hte reasons I stopped using it was because their javascript support was horrible. Personally I dont like web sites that depend on javascript, however Gmail is really the first one where I can understand the use of it. It makes it feel much more like an actual application on your desktop as opposed to the standard webmail interface. A lot of sites that depend heavily on javascript are dependent on it in a stupid way, eg 99% of them could get by without it. With Gmail I feel differently however.

If they wanted to support all browsers, including old outdated ones and ones that didnt support javascript well or at all, it would have come at a huge cost to the interface experience. It would just be another yahoo or hotmail account. And if that was the case, the only difference between gmail and the others would have been their storage size, which now most of the others have matched or exceeded, so there would be no advantage at all. Which would have made Gmail totally pointless.

Do you think to yourself, "No table? I aint buying that!" or do you just see the word "Notable" and not notice anything and buy the set. The problem with these is that SO MUCH TIME is taken up by the huge ass wars. Now, I understand it wouldn't make much sense to be like "There was this huge war with hundreds of thousands of people and lots of them died. Ok, moving on...." but I was just bored to tears. At least in the movie the war was pretty to look at but my dear Lord, these wars took hundreds of pages in the books and are possibly some of the most boring passages I have ever laid eyes on.

1/8 to RCA is by far the most common so thats what they should include. For the maybe 10% of the population that has optical only or a different type of input, they can supply their own cable. But a 1/8 to RCA would easily fit the bill for 90% of people, I'd wager.

I would expect them to include everything you need to make a product work with all functionality out of the box.

I think this is a lot different than a printer not coming with a USB cable. Although not including a USB cable is a pretty crappy thing as well these days, since I'd guess >90% of end users have USB ports on their computers.

Actually, it's not like that at all. See, one of the "big deals" of this product is that you can play your computer audio files on your stereo with little fuss. Not just your computer, but any computer on your network that has itunes installed.

Not including an audio cable is stupid, in my book, because one of the biggest selling points of the product is NOT FUNCTIONAL without additional equipment. Sure, it's a cheap cable (3-5 bucks most places), but I imagine there are a number of people who don't have these handy. And if Apple bought these in bulk (which they obviously would), it would probably cost them 25 cents at the most to include this cable in the box.

For me, playing mp3's or aac on my stereo isnt such a big deal, beacuse I've been doing it for years with a 25 foot audio cable going direct from my comp to my stereo. But for many, their stereos aren't so close to their computers. This product is a cool idea, but like I said, the (probaby) biggest selling point isnt functional without additional equipment. Are you on crack? Of course they want everyone to go out and buy doom 3, and trust me, it will happen.

Just because they license their engine out doesn't mean the original game they release with said engine is just a "technology demo". They're still trying to make an awesome game, quake 3 was by far my favorite of all the quakes. Doom 3 should be a killer one-player experience, which was their goal. Seriously, it looks scary as hell.

Now of course their ultimate goal, financially, as a company, is to license the engine and make serious bucks from it. And they deserve to, hell they spent 4+ years coding the damn thing. But that's not "the real secret". They want to release a killer game, why not license out the engine on the side, if it kicks ass and they can make tons of money off it?

Since the lead time on new games is at least a year, "common" computing should pretty much catch up in the interim.

That would be a minimum of 4 new hard drives per month (assuming they make 500GB ones, I think they do, if its less than change that to 6 HD's/month).

Many posts have pointed out tape backup as one of several solutions, however with your requirements I dont see how you could do anything else, if your time is worth anything. The other option is basically DVD's but that'd be 200 DVD's a month you'd have to burn. Fun fun...

I used to have the taskbar hidden as well but the grandparent had a good point, that you have to move the mouse to show it, and then find what you want, and then click it. When it's always visible, you can see what you want before you even start moving the mouse. It is a lot quicker in my opinion. If you have low screen resolution, however, it's a good compromise to hide it.

Regarding task bar grouping, I think it's useless as well. It pisses me off a lot, because you have to do two clicks to re-open a window rather than one. It's one of the first things I always turn off with a fresh install of XP. It's still shitty that MS patented this, but at the same time, it's such a shitty feature that I dont care. :)
