It says 'system' directories and setting this would would be like users having access to /etc/* (in a unix system) as opposed /home/luser/* This is a problem for two reasons. 1) No you cant trust local users not to break/sabatoge soemthing if they have a chance. 2)When users have incorrect permissions it gives an outside 'crackers' more chances to compromise an account that has right to do real damage in this case 1100 chances. I do agree that an explanation of the grading system would be useful.

Actually this has been discussed on the Perl sites. When it is said that Perl is hard to maintian they are not refering to programs written in Perl. Any program that is not properly documented is hard to maintian regardless of what it is written in. What is being referred to is the internals of the perl program (/usr/bin/perl or perl.exe depending on your platform). It is hard for the people who develop perl to add new features ect. It has nothing to do with the people who use perl to develop programs. It is the same distinction as comparing writting a c program and maintianing gcc.

They dont care about the scanner or the software. They property they are protecting is thier ability to track your internet usage.

This is an email i sent to Amazon's cust srv. dept. at terms@amazon.com. It speaks softly but i have found that being 'nice' tends to get a better response. Dear Amazon, I noticed the change in your privacy policy specificly allowing that you will sell customer information as a part of a sale of a buisness unit. While i respect you for at least posting this information I would like to ask that you make some accomodations for those who have used your service prior to this change. Ideally it would be good if you purged the info ans started collecting fresh. At very least offer people a oppertunity to opt-out now that what we can expect from your company has changed. ============

  21. Why they are doing it... on Secretive Company Scanning the Net · · Score: 1

Something i thought of when i was reading the original article is this... Often when i do a traceroute i notice the ISP routers will often be named with geographic names.. perhaps they are gathering a database that will allow banner ads with regional flavor and maybe even different languages. It wont be a perfect system but it will be 'better' to adverstisers than the data they have now. IMHO i dont think its a big deal. They are running ping and traceroute only which is not at all invasive and quite easy to block, and not very intrusive from a security standpoint. If they were port scanning then i might be worried about it but this really seems like a lot of hype over nothing.. I bet it wouldn't have made it to slashdot if they weren't associated with marekting technology..
