Throughout these discussions I keep thinking to myself, whats the issue here? I do not Own a Tivo yet, frankly I just can't afford it right now, but its a great concept. I have to agree with the NON-subscribers, if all they want to use it as is a VCR with lots of storage space, whats the issue here. Well i think back to my days as an electronics store salesman, and then a Store manger or Babbage's software and I realize the Tivo point of view. They are Probably not making any money off selling the unit, they sell the equipment at a loss, and make the money on the services. The same is true of Nintendo, Sony, ETC. They don't make Money on the game system, infact when the systems first launch they even loose money(When the N64 was launched it was sold for approx $50 less than it cost to manufacter them). I reason this out because if I were to build a machine with the same capabilities as a Tivo myself sort of using used parts I don't think I could assemble it at that price. I have heard people propose the thought of doing just this righting an Open source Tivo alike system, pulling the data from the internet someplace. Or reverse engineerig the TIVO hardware and wrtting a new OS for it basically, that replicates the same features that are now gone, changed or otherwise not the way they used to be. These might be good alernatives, but you have to wonder why no one has persued them yet.
Actually it is, quite insightful and I respect him for his opinion, despite the fact that it is counter to the common opinion. BTW Next time,POST with name you Sackless Moron.
I propose the (DFCA)Digital Freedom Continuence Act. "1. Congress Shall Pass no law restricting your ability to do anything digitally that you can do through handwritten, and or Analog means. 2. Congress shall not allow the granting of a patent for any device that would knowingly impinge upon your ability to do anything digitally that you could do via handwritten or Analog means. 3. It shall be unlawful to distribute technology which would knowingly violate the Free Speech and Fair use intentions of the Consitution of the United states of America. 4. It shall hence forth be understood that once "content" is purchased, it is the purchaser's right to do what ever they choose with that content, and the purchaser shall have the right to do as they have always been able to do via handwritten, or analog means. 5. It shall be understood that the freedom to do with media digitally shall not change from the freedom of use available via analog means, as it is understood and commonly used as of December 31, 2000. The consumer digital media freedom shall remain the same as Anlog media freedom as it was defined by the precedent of the Sony BetaMax time shifting case. "
I agree, wasn't that really the original intention of the recording industry anyway...we used to call them Music Distributors! Artists do work(recording)and get paid for t from the royalties that are paid for that work(or better yet by touring), someone pays for that work to get done, ie studio time, and engineers getting paid(usually producers), those people get paid out the royalties that are earner by selling the recording, the recodring is distibuted to stores(the aformentioned distributors(RAII)), the stores collect the money, which then works its way back up the chain. RAII does not play this way anymore(I seem to rememebr they once did), so maybe, now artists should be paid directly, and distribute directly.
If we really want to solve this problem, we need to get a politician in Washington in our Corner.
Someone sympathatic to our cause, that can work within the system to fix these issues. The DMCA should never have been passed it got passed because of lobby groups I am sure, that talked our local reps into thinking this was a good idea. We need to lobby back. Prohibition was bad idea, and it was reversed. This is a bad idea and if we play within the system we could get this reversed. This is the unfortunate loop hole in the US govenment by representation. (Disclaimer I proud to be an American please do not take this as any kind of disention on my part, just an analysis of what i think is wrong some times. Its a double edged sword, in many ways.) The bulk of the work that gets done in Congress is a good thing, and has good results, but unfortunately the otherside of the sword, is that it also makes it just as easy for the true reprehensible stuff to get done too, and for the most part with out the public really being aware that its happening, or getting much say in it. The Passage of the DMCA was bought by the powers that be, the publishers of the word have infinately more money to pay lobbists to talk congress, et al into voting the way they want things. If this had been voted on by the poblic at large, and worded in such a way that the common man could understand it it would have never become law. ie "Please vote YES or NO, the govenment would like to take away your right to freely distribute infomation as you see fit so that the publishing and recording industry can make sure they maintain thier insane profit margins. A vote of yes would make this Law, and restrict your ability to freely share your ideas, and expose you to law suit for doing anything that big business considers a violation of thier profit margins. A vote of NO would continue under the freedom of information, and free speesh as you have always enjoyed in America." I propose the (DFCA)Digital Freedom Continuence Act. "1. Congress Shall Pass no law restricting your ability to do anything digitally that you can do through handwritten, and or Analog means. 2. Congress shall not allow the granting of a patent for any device that would knowingly impinge upon your ability to do anything digitally that you could do via handwritten or Analog means. 3. I could probably expand on this but I figure thats a start to restoring my freedom as I understood it before the DMCA got into the wild.
Its deeper than that. He was allowed to operate by his own rules for a time and then the rules were changed right out from under him. Its the facing getting tossed that bugs me.
Greatest program ever!
One problem though, I recently changed from stampede.89 distro(It was very out of date.90 didn't work, and my box was becoming non-useful) to mandrake 8, and I can't get id3v2 to compile at all. Not all bad I can still make.ogg files, has anyone had compile problems with id3v2, or know where I can get it in binary?
Just cuious, used to work for Babbages in a former life, and this system your talking about sounds alot like the POS system there, if it was congrats, it was an excellent system.
Unions Blow! End of story

IT Unions?

They are out dated, useless, a waste of time and money, nad no longer needed. I have been a memeber of unions before because the company forced me too pretty much, if you work there you must belong to the union(because the union says so of course) the only thing they did for me was take my money. Unions DO NOT belong in the IT field. If you hav issues with your employeer get another job, if youra good IT worker, ANYONE will hire you.
Dell's Latitude CPI A line had the same problem. In Dell's Defense they don't manufacter the battery, its an OEM part from a major battery maker(I knew the name but draw a blank at the moment) they had a bad run is all. Also in Dell's defense I love my Dell Laptops. The latutude line is the best damn machine I have worked on, hands down.
They can keep suing, and encrypting, but we'll just keep cracking...why don't they understand this. Its a stupid conversation to even be having, we will always win, because everytime they release new protection crap we will just release new cracking crap.
I agree, this is akin to schools in the bible belt saying you can't teach evolution. These scholars(of course we are too, most of the stuff I do because I want to learn, and see if it can be done, I just don't do it for a school), should be allowed to publish this paper with out reprisal! I believe they have a fundamental right to do so. Knowledge should be free, and the DMCA is toliet paper, that oughta get brought up as being unconsitutional and thrown out in anycase.
I have ben on the other side of the fence as a hiring manager(I don't do that anymore, tired of compromising my morals). The problem at least as far as the company I was working saw it was as follows. They make claim on what you create, because they given that you spend 40+ hours a week at the Job, there is a good chance that at least some of the work/thought process on the project took place while you were on their time. They therefore figure they own some part of the work. I will be first to admit that alot of what I do on and off the job carries over on both sides.
It would be alot easier to review mandrake if one could download it...I have been trying since it was released, and of all the mirror sites I have tried the best I have gotten to, was 53% before the download timed out.
Ok, I have done number theory, I have read all the posts, I still think this can be done especially since you have prior knowledge of the file your compressing. Given all the time in the world to analyze it, this could certianly be done...sounds like a fun way to use distributed.net actually.:>
Well unfortuantely, it really depends on what you basis of business is...the real truth is that a site that lives by providing free access is doomed in the web these days. At least unless its supported by other services that pay its cost of existance.
Orson Scott Card "Ender's Game" it it explains all in vivid detail. it ought to be school teacher, principal, etc required reading. "Ender's Shadow" as well actually.
I had seans problems, but I never told my parents, its my life and I choose to dela with it myself, I know how to fight. I played the game my way, I didn't sink to these jerks level they eventually ran out of words and took a swing, I'd give them a black eye or two, break a nose, or an arm...they would leave me alone for while till some one else got brave, repeat cycle. Moral of this story, PEOPLE teach your fucking kid to defend himself, stop being a pacifist, PC, weak ass jerk. Let your kid know its ok to defend himself, I never started a fight infact I avoided them(I didn't like to get in trouble), but if it happened I ended it as quickly and brutally as I could.
