All new Macs come with OSX 10.2. The free offer of 10.2 to K-12 teachers is to enable them to install it on the Macs they already have (both school and personal), not push new hardware sales. Think about it before entering bash-Apple mode.
Apple's doing this because there are a lot of iMacs out there that can run OSX 10.2 but were bought before hand. Anyone playing with previous versions of OSX were likely told by their tech specialist (usually media center/Librarian with yet another job to do for the same money) to pass on OSX until Apple got it more usable. Even with copies of 10.2 floating around schools (I do warranty repair at several county's schools) they're not about to go and risk thousands of $$$ for a version of OSX that might not be up to snuff. Hence, the give away.
Apple's not hoping to push hardware sales with this; any new Macs will come with 10.2 on it. They just want people to get away from OS9.
Try Pinellas County School board/system.They are not exclusively Mac but the main school board building has a lot of them around. Across the county, Macs are in schools in varying degrees. The lowest percentage are in high schools, though there are some high schools that are about 90% Mac. Another high school tech person told me his school had no Macs. He just didn't support them. The teachers in that had them did their own support, except for warranty repair. Then they called us (Apple authorized repair shop).
This county also has a city (Largo, FL) that is run with minimal windows machines. They are primarily Linux with a handfull of Macs in city hall. Wouldn't believe how scared the linux guys are of the Macs. Swore that there was no way to hook them up to the network and ended up getting the Macs their own dsl line. Weird!
Budwiser is the Microsoft beer. It presents itself as a real beer but it's thin, watery, and less pleasent than the end product of a night of drinking.
While I don't know the guts of the system, I appriciate the fact that Kai and co. have managed to come up with a great front end to some really complex software. I like the fact that you can get down and dirty with the texture editor (based on the ideas behind audio synthisizers) or just have quick fun with the basic front end.
The scsi options with beige G3s included an ATTO ultra wide scsi card and one or two 4GB 7200RPM UW SCSI drives. Still not to bad, especially if you're using them for scratch disk space.
The latest Macs will ship with Bluetooth keyboards, mice (still one button) and chargers (or you can use your cel-phone as your data entry device). They'll convince Epson and HP to ship Bluetooth printers and scanners.
Flat panels prices will drop enough to finally make them outpace CRT sales.
Macs will have a G5 chip but it won't be as cool as current hype; barely breaks 2GHz.
Adobe finally ships font management software towards the third Q. Quark 6 upgrade only $800.00.
Tablet Mac (codename Frank-n-furter) is unveiled. Jobs insists it's not a decendent of Newton (NIWIETCS-Not Invented When I Ran The Company Syndrom).
Firewire based A/V hub (80GB HD, enhanced iTunes control s/w, bluetooth speakers) showcased (but not released yet) that works with Sony iLink VCR, DVD player, Receiver/amp, TV, etc.
Lucas tries to push digital theater use by releasing two versions of SWIII. The digital one has Natalie Portman FFN scene (after she's genetically altered to a Hut).

Dude, what kind of people come to you for support? The ones who can't figure it out for themselves. No one's going to pay me $75.00/hour to show me they know how to set up their system.
I had the chance to buy a new Mac (533MHz dp) last year (had just sold a house and had 25k in bank). Ended up picking up a used G3 off of eBay cheap. Now that I'm a field tech, I don't game that much (lunch time in the pit was too much) and I'm not doing anything more taxing than low level DTP. Upgrading to 10.2 has finally made me want a new Mac. Not for the processor speed (can get a 550MHz G4 for $259) but for an AGP logic board and monitor card. 10.2 is finally at a daily usuable state for me. I imagine this will be driving other Mac hold outs as well. I doubt I'll be picking up the latest/fastest Mac (can't afford xServe anyway) but will find something off of eBay again. I'm not doing 3d modeling, or video editing, just internet, DTP, and strategy games (SMAC!). Still don't need the latest/greatest. Just enough to get by.
My car is another matter; 454,.030 over, 10.5:1cr, aluminium heads, dual Quad, etc. Gotta' have a beast like this for my daily driver. Good thing I'm paid milage seeing as how I'm putting 50-100 miles a day on it.
Sorry about that. Sisko wasn't in First Contact. It was established in some of the first DS9 episodes that his wife was killed in the Borg attack that had Picard merged in with the Borg. In a later DS9 episode, Sisko blames Picard for his wife's death. Seeing as how First Contact had the Defiant, it just made sense to me for Sisko to be part of the movie. There could have been the whole lack of trust thing; was Picard a mole for the Borg? How could Picard get Sisko to trust him. Could have taken some of the tension from Treasure of the Sierra Madre or a similar movie instead of the basic roller coaster ride where you see the drops coming up on a regular basis.
Or a flashback episode where cadet Kirk, Spock, McCoy, and Scotty go on a road trip to keep Kirk's girlfriend from getting a holographic recording of Kirk and another woman. Along the way, they get stoned, wake up the next morning and say...
Wouldn't mind seeing Larry Niven's Ringworld or Footfall made into a movie. They both have basic plots that an average audience can comprehend (shipwrecked and alien invasion) but would have great visuals (fly cycles, Kzinti, Ringworld, an Orion taking off for space war with baby elephants, etc.). Who could ask for more (or expect it from Hollywood).
I just wish that First Contact had explored the whole Picard-Sisko thing. Sisko blames Picard for his wife's death yet is forced to work with him when both ships (Defiant and Enterprise) go back in time to fight the Borg.
They need to focus on the human story, not the special effects or re-hashed plot lines. Look at Farscape or B5. The best episodes were when they mixed the soap and the space in equal measures to create great space opera.
At least the old Trek had the rivalry between Spock and McCoy. No wonder there's all that/fanfic out there; a couple of guys fighting over another guy's interest.
Basic iMacs start at $799.00. G4 based eMacs (17" CRT iMac) start at $1099.00. iBooks start at $1199.00. G4 minitowers start at $1699.00. 'Course, if you're a student, you can get even better prices. You can also find beige G3's, used on eBay for $300 on up. These also run OS X 10.2.
Don't forget Minix, MK Linux, AUX, etc. I've been collecting *nix's that run on Macs for a long time. NetBSD has been out for Macs for at least 10 years.
The reason that you're not going to see Quartz/Aqua supported on any other *nix's is that Apple doesn't want the GUI to get loose. It's what they use to get people to buy Apple computers. Selling Apple computers generates money for Apple Inc. Generating money for Apple Inc. allows it to stay in business.
Suppose Apple did decide to switch to using an x86 processor. Do you think this means that Apple is going to rewrite everything to run on every ASUS/Intel, etc motherboard out there? Hell no! They'll use their own motherboard with their own chipsets, bios, etc. They continue to sell for about the same prices as they do now. One of the reasons that Apple was able to make it through their 'crappy 90's' before Jobs came back is that they have some of the highest margins in the industry on their hardware. They don't have to sell as many boxes as Dell, HP, ect. to stay in business. You can also bet that you'll only be able to get your box repaired at an Apple Warrenty shop no matter what processor they put in it. Apple won't sell their parts to Joe-Blow Repair shop.
While a nuclear explosion is rather devastating, it doesn't totally vaporize everything. H bomb tests at Bikini atoll included Navy ships so we could see how they weathered the explosion. I think there's a picture with one cruiser lifted hundreds of feet up in the air with one of these tests.
For an Orion, you build a really thick plate (it will slowly wear away) with some ablative surface (carbon, oil?) and set off the nuke some distance from it. You don't capture all the force of the explosion but what you do bumps you along.
On an endless car ride out to see the Grand Canyon (4 adults in the seats and 4 kids rolling loose in the back of a station wagon with no a/c in July or August) we picked up some kind of bubblegum flavored coke (generic southern term for carbonated beverage) in the St. Louis area. Anyone know what it's called or if it's still around?
The last thing I'd want at 17 (or any other age) would be for my parents to be trying to setup my social life. My dad's on his third wife (cheated on the second one with #3) and has already told me about cheating on #3, before they even got married. She's the typical trophy wife too; blond hair that has to be "done" every week, big tits, 20 years his younger.
When i was engaged, my dad took me aside and told me he thought my wife-to-be was not right for me. She's a unix admin, a little overweight, doesn't wear makeup, and has plain hair. Of course my dad wouldn't like her; she's smart, thinks for herself and lives her life as she wills.
If this kid wants to play games as part of his downtime, why not? Why should his parents be trying to mess with his life? It's not like he's out doing drugs (they screen at trounaments?), etc.
Maybe the kid's a loaner who isn't into "socializing with his peers" and all that shit. Obviously, the kid knows what he wants; go to fencing matches and games. Nothing wrong with that. I did the band thing all through high school and all I wanted to do on trips was read and be left alone by all the fucking monkeys on the bus. Yeah, I hated "the best years of my life" and have no regrets to how I spent my time. 'Course life outside the zoo is now much better. Married, kid, house, etc. leave no time to read.
I got my wife a custom made ring with amathyst. It was carved as a snake eating a flower (with amathyst inside) and another snake holding it. For reference, check out the Silmarillion; Ring of Finrod Felegund.
I like the extras on DVD's. I make it a point to research online to make sure that there are good extras there and not just the last tv ad for the movie.
The Mel Brooks classics with their director's commentary are almost a class in film making.
Cleopatera had almost an extra hour that you don't see on the versions they show on tv (the whole theater release film is 4 hours long).

One of the reasons Apple has stuck with Motorola's PPC chips vs. IBM PowerX chips is the AltiVec units on the PPC chips. This new chip, while based on the Power4 chip is geared towards desktop use and not server use. Think of a passenger car vs a semi-truck. They both do basicly the same thing but are more optimized for certain uses. The desktop chip needs to be quickly responsive to a wide variety but small concurrent number of processes or threads while the server chip needs to handle large numbers of threads or requests to do pretty much the same thing (file access, database access, ect.).
IBM's just bringing down a high horsepower diesel and gearing it for passenger use. They're also throwing in AltiVec type of processes which Apple really likes/needs. One more reason why going to X86 chips would be difficult; no AltiVec.
