Debian does let you choose the kernel you want to boot with, when starting an installation dont just type linux and hit enter. Hit F1 and some of the help screens talk about the following:

linux -- booting the default 2.4.x kernel and little customization.
expert -- booting the default 2.4.x kernel and more control over installation such as choosing grub or lilo for example.

linux26 -- booting 2.6.6 kernel (as of my last installation) and little customization.
expert26 -- booting 2.6.6 kernel and more control.

so its not hard to install or configure your debian system.

OK, this is probably far fetched. How about running a deamon lets say on port 80 (since its http and its most popular), ok so lets say this deamon tho doesnt serve up only data for one application. Rather its a application routing deamon, that is to say it knows where ssh is running and where http is running.

So if i want to connect a ssh server if fire up my ssh client and connect on port 80 and the deamon passes this request to the ssh deamon, at the same time i fire up my browser and connect to port 80 on the same server and the deamon routes the http request to the httpd. Is that possible feasible?

So if one looks at other jobs around alot of workers are unionized eg, airline pilots/mechanics, auto workers etc etc.

Is there a union for computer professionals?

If so which one I havent found one, if not why not?

We talk all high minded on slashdot thousands times a day every day 365 days a year. Is it all talk or do people here think that a Computer Professionals union is needed these days?

I know that setting up email client is trivial to people here on /. but when will these companies start including open source clients in the quasi "approved list" of email client. I mean if you look at the FAQ it does not mention any approved clients, but when the fail to mention viable alternatives such as Thunderbird or even the Mozilla mail client are they telling their customers to only use the "commercial" clients.

This has always irked me, when ever a compnay puts up a FAQ or a how-to to use their services with other products they always just mention commercial/for pay products and never ever mention open source products.

    WHY is that?

Just a thought: May be they don't want their customers in the habit of using free as in beer/speech products.
