Id like to ask IBM to move the LSB forward. Move development and target features to a Board of Uber-Super Geeks we can respect - who will not turn into Markatroid whores at the earliest opportunity. Not that I dont think Linus isnt/hasnt done a great job - but a little more co-hesion between distros will give something to shoot for by the Software Industry. People can still use the 'roll your own' philosophy all they like... and still meet an accepted Standard. Afterall - standards are a real power in computing...
In related news Bill Clinton also promised to do something about curing cancer, giving gifts of gold and murr to orphans, promote real American Democracy, end private campaign funding, recount Florida ballots and rescued a kitten from a Tree.
Way to go Bill - promise stuff now that you are irrelevant. Where the hell was the increase in NASA budgets when people cared what the hell you thought?
I dropped out of high-school about a year later (and I'm making more money now as a 17 year old Sysadmin than any of my teachers ever have or will.
hehe. Me too. 6 figure income without a high school diploma -- gotta love it. This really just underlines the utter unimportance of what education has become.
I may be wrong - but Id venture a guess that you dont work for any Fortune 500 companies. You cant get a job here at XZY Auto (big 3 US Autos) without at least an Associates Degree. Which I have - and it was like pulling teeth to have the HR monkeys approve the dept. head's choice. Im not discounting that the two of you may be talented (as am I IMHO) - but having an education can only help. Entering the workforce at 17 might seem like a good idea when your 17 but I wish Id have stayed and finished my second degree instead of returning to school at 25.
Times are good right now - and trust me, when things get tight, and the economy is at a reasonable level, finding a job is going to get very tough when you dont have a high-school diploma. Not impossible, but tough.. excepting your 0.001% 31337 troops of super keyboard ninjas - If either of you are that good you have nothing to worry about. If that is not the case (as laws of averages would probably say) you might realize later that education is not utterly 'unimportant'. Im not suggesting that it is an absolute must - and nothing else is important; but it does have value and says alot about the type of person you are and not just about the knowledge and skills you may/may not possess.
Yes - and it is sooo difficult to simply cut your Ribbon cables w/ an Utility knife, twist one end around once or twice, zip it all up with a cable tye or two - and Voila! you have a 'non-air impeding' cable from MoBo to HD. I dont know anyone who clocked their box who hasnt done this... simple and effective.
Have a look at the/. article here
I'm still waiting for the handhelD PDA/Phone with a nice built in game system, and enough memory for a few days of MP3s though. Oh, and 802.11 networking, and the ability to remotely display X11 apps. And it should cook rice perfectly every time
You can get this with a iPAQ or Casio E1XX and the right array of CF cards. None of this 'springboard' proprietary interface stuff. Ive got a CF 56K modem, 10/100NIC & (2pcs) 96MB CF mem for my E100. Of course the E100 runs WinCE - but with alittle more maturity Pocket Linux will be a nice alternative.
What the HandHeld industry needs is a separation between OS and hardware - Ive said this before on/. - I hope the Handheld industry 'goes the way of the IBM PC' vs the 'Apple way' that it is now... I would much rather have an opportunity to choose the OS independently of the Hardware for my Handheld. If you have a look at your 'Palm' hardware vs your average 'WinCE' hardware I think you'll understand my frustration - I would like a more elegant OS with a more open 'attitude' but Im not willing to hobble myself with under-powered/under-capable hardware.
Does anyone know if someone is developing a CF Phone with WinCE
"Most Americans don't realize that each PlayStation unit contains a 32-bit CPU -- every bit as powerful as the processor found in most desktop and laptop computers," said one military intelligence officer who declined to be identified. "Beyond that, the graphics capabilities of a PlayStation are staggering -- five times more powerful than that of a typical graphics workstation, and roughly 15 times more powerful than the graphics cards found in most PCs."
This unidentified informant later went on to say: "As I said before - the PS2 is so powerful with its mega-advanced graphics that the evil empire's leader Sadam Hussein is going to use them for Arms. Its just staggering to think that with all the technology our military has, what makes the US Number-Fucking-One in the world -because we kick ass- is going to be defended by the PS2! And you can buy them! If you own a PS2 you will be as powerfull as the US DoD! Wow just think of it - you can own a piece of technology capable of being used just like our awe-inspiring DoD!"
Onlookers from reality were later overheard saying "Most Americans also dont realize that they are being manipulated into being mindless consumer drones - that their media, government and leadership is a shill for business who intend to enslave them... just look at this drivel."
This article is so laughable that it is almost sickening. Imagine: how do you sell a product/idea/meme to Americans? This article is almost perfect. It has the big three:
1) Evil Dictator bent on destroying the American Way(TM) 2) War, Arms, Miltiary (aka Biggest Dick contest) 3) Consumer demand frenzy for the latest product as in : "Look at the alarm this is causing in the Marketplace - the consumer craze! YOU SHOULD WANT ONE TOO! DON'T MISS OUT! (ala McCarthyism, CabbagePatchKids, Elmo Doll, PS2)
For those Americans who read this and think to mark it down as Flame-bait... go back and READ THE ARTICLE AGAIN Im 'right on the mark' and you know it - not only that; but you cant stand that it is true. Wow - I love this article! The only thing that would have made it better would have been mention of the President-Elect's feelings on the issue:

These 'no persmission' values may just be default values associated with this e-book file... if any book could offer rights in these regards - wouldnt it be Alice in Wonderland? Could this just be a case of an overworked geek not adding the correct persmissions? it sounds like a simple answer - but I find it very difficult to believe that they would attempt to withhold rights from Alice in Wondlerland.
If Im wrong - it would be another case of Corporate America saying "you dont have any rights, you have only the rights we want to offer you - even if the terms we set forth violate previously described rights we dont care - we have the means to defend ourselves vigourously - you do not... and your government is on our side - as evidenced by their lack of action at display after display of our arrogance... piss off, see you in court.. heheheheheh "
MS spokesmen It's time for RMS & ESR to behave in the same fashion, IMO
MS Spokesmen and other corporate spokespeople make me sick. The abandonment of logic and thought in order to shill whatever product you have been hired to do (at that time) is laughable. What Linux (and the rest of the world) needs is FEWER people talking like markatroid shills. We need a social-movement to SHUT THESE PEOPLE OUT because they corrupt mind-space with crap. MS "spokespeople" should be instantly ignored, by 'us' and by any self-respecting media.
Speaking honestly, about your opinions and beliefs, makes people nervous --like yourself-- because they are used to being spoon-fed their ideas, thoughts, positions, goals, ideology, beliefsystems, politics (WHATEVER) by shameless marketing/advertising $WHORES$ in print, billboards, TV, Radio. In a world fabricated by one-sided liars, people speaking impassioned honesty somehow seems radical. As CORPORATE America seeks to replace its culture and ethos with the REAL world - it frightens me that people will begin to yearn for the whitewashed, bleached, sanitized methods of thought and speech encouraged by American Corporate culture.
RMS & ESR are provocateurs of the best kind - they speak from conviction and honesty - they also have the good fortune of being 'right' in this case (about OS S/W).
Your whole post is completely disconnected from reality - you yearn for a false reality of the capitalism-driven void.
Here is something provocative: America has been violating the concepts of its own Constitution in its dealings with Cuba for 35 years. Stop and have a look that only 3 countries (America, Israel * ???) have supported the embargo against Cuba - while the other 150 (or so) members of the UN condemn it year after year as a human rights violation. Tell me - does the knowledge of America unjustly assaulting Cuba seem 'maladjusted' and 'strange'? Could that be because you are impervious to the idea based on what mass propaganda has been foisted upon you? Could the constant re-affirmation of America's doing 'right' in this case sooth you from the 'radical position' I'm stating above?* Further - would I be wrong because you've heard a contrary message 1^199191 times before, and you have lost the will to question it?
How is this similar to the objections you make about the advocacy methods of RMS & ESR regarding Linux?
* Its just may be that 'you' agree with me regarding the Cuban embargo - but I use it as a classic example.
