GOD, do I wish Windows 95 would retire itself. In this day and age, there's just no excuse. I feel sorry for the office workers who fight with that every day.
Uh, they DIED when they expired. Probably not a good thing to let your web server die over a long holiday weekend.
Not only did they die, they got all violent once their expiration date was getting close. Imagine if your web servers decided to all mirror Rotten.com or maybe the insidious goatse.cx? I guess we'd need to take one of those bad ass three-barreled pistols to the computers.:D
Anyone who's worried about this, do what I do. Bring your passport to get into bars. Or just take a knife to the magnetic strip and scratch it all up, or scrape off part of it, so it can't be read.
All I'm saying is that they shouldn't expect to be in the black if it's easy as running a Google search to find a way to circumvent their protection. I don't condone the practice of cracking software, I just think software designers should wise up instead of pitching a fit when their weakly protected software is pirated. Find a better way to convince people to pay you. Doom was the first shareware program I registered, because it was the first that gave me something that made it worth registering, besides a warm fuzzy feeling. And look at how well Id did, they became millionaires. They're savvy businessmen.
The way I see it, shareware authors shouldn't expect to turn a profit. They should just see being profitable as a nice perk. The majority of people out there won't pay for what they can get for free. If that involves running a serial number generator or a simple crack, then that's what people will do. The only reasonable way to get people to register is to do like Doom and offer a sample that can be expanded upon once the cash is coughed up. Most importantly, it can't be an unlock code, it must be an entirely different program. Of course that doesn't prevent people from giving their buddies copies of the registered version, but that's an unwinnable war.
They do issue stock. The thing is, you have to do it OTC, which is a little less convenient than buying Red Hat stock.
I'm not sure I want to become a partial owner in a company that's asking for donations, but I'm seriously considering getting another boxed Mandrake distribution to help them out.
I hear you. What really infuriates me is that it's not only the techies who understand that Microsoft is way too powerful of a corporation. I've had discussions with some of the people I do work for, your standard office work folks, who don't really grasp computers other than for what they do day to day, and they hate Windows! They understand that there's no real substitute either, if they want to run their software. Everyone knows there's something foul afoot, yet the DOJ can't do shit about it. It's really irritating. Although, they do keep me employed by me having to fix their shitty products, so that's good I suppose.
I've discovered the key to getting karma on Slashdot. See, the key is, specifically say either "This post's going to be modded -1 offtopic, but..." or something to that effect, or "Don't mod this up."
Ladies and gentlemen of the moderation committee, please DO NOT mod this comment up. It will most likely be modded DOWN as OFFTOPIC. And I'm fine with that, really. I prostrate myself in front of you, readers!
I think that's the point. It is cheaper, hence useful to Google. You're not paranoid. If I could program something useful, I'd enter the contest. Of course, I wouldn't enter something that I'd want to patent myself. But it would be quite cool to take a tour of their facilities.
I've worked on a number of Netopia routers that have required firmware upgrades. We'll be installing them for clients who have strange setups that aren't common for most people, and on occasion the problems we run into are solved by a firmware upgrade. Netopia's good at posting upgrades to their FTP server, even with products that have been out for a while.
Word of caution though, and I'm sure you've heard it before. Don't upgrade the firmware unless you are having problems. One time I updated the firmware on one of these routers, and ended up breaking more things than I was trying to fix! I called up Netopia's support line, and apparently this upgrade was a buggy one, it had only been posted on the FTP site for a few hours when they found the bugs. Bad luck for me trying to update during that time though. But hey, those are the breaks.
Yes, I agree, Mandrake's very easy to install. I have a test that I do often. Don't laugh, it's actually a very good indicator. Basically, if I can install an OS or do some work on my computer while drunk/stoned off my gourd, it's an "intuitive" process. Mandrake's actually easier to install than Win98/2K in this respect. I haven't tried with XP yet. Red Hat's not bad, at least the more recent releases, but pretty much all of the other distributions that I've tried this test on don't do so well. I usually foul something up, or get discouraged or lost and give up.
Does anyone else recall the install pictures that Mandrake was showing for one of the 8.1 beta installs? Basically, just snapshots of a raging party that the dev team had. Funny stuff.
What exactly does your homemade Linux-based music software do that can't be accomplished by sturdier, specialized pieces of hardware like samplers? I mean, sure, you can't play Solitaire on samplers, but then again, you don't need to.
You might want to go with what the pros do... get a sampler. They're rugged, and you'll be able to access audio very quickly. And they're cheaper than buying an entire computer (at least they can be.
Firstly, the Empeg is nearly sold out for good, if it's not already gone. Also, I don't know that the Empeg's interface would be right for musicians. It's pretty time-consuming to find certain mp3s. I am assuming the guy's going to be using the computer as a sampler, not as a way to play songs that have already been fully put together. Talk about your boring concerts!
Right on, man. College is a bitch. And lots of people drink to escape their troubles. That's like one of the main things that Alcoholics Anonymous says is a bad thing to do. Though, it hasn't stopped me from drowning my sorrows in drink.
You must have something configured wrong in Windows... I have a 1.3 Ghz Athlon with a Geforce 2 MX card, and it flies. Are you running the multiplayer test? Because the final version seems fine to me. Haven't tried on Linux.
And I quote, from the disclaimer from their web page:
O.K., kids... let's get this straight. XEvil is not for meek, peace-loving, "I love you, you love me..." types of people. The fans of XEvil enjoy it because of its shameless displays of blood and violence, of people getting lit on fire, getting shot, being ripped up by chainsaws, getting high on drugs, and burst open by aliens.
Xevil's a really fun, fast-paced side-scrolling jump & shoot style game. It's available at http://www.xevil.com. Red Hat had a lapse of judgement and stopped including it in their distributions, so I went ahead and switched to Debian. You can use "apt-get install xevil" to get xevil. I recommend it.
Or, just get a gamecube and play Smash Bros. Melee for a year. I love that game, I wish I could find a cheap Gamecube. Maybe EBay. (On second thought, screw that, it'll probably end up being even more expensive than at the store!)
Sounds like a storyline straight out of the Marvel Universe. I love it!

Could someone explain to me why Unisys is siding with Microsoft on this? There has got to be some back story I'm not aware of.

I figured it would be "Frank Stallone."
(Damn the lameness filter...)

More like informative. But yeah, moderators, go to town on this. Mod it up like you never have before.
Oh, so that's why they misspelled Lincoln "Linkin." Too much time in the chat rooms!

That whole race is going to be a race of marked men.

Most commercials are exaggerated anyway, I think this idea's great, it gets the point across. People expect commercials to be over the top.
