Seems to me that advertising more often than not takes unknowns into consideration. What it really comes down to is whether or not the advertising expense has a profitable return.
You place a bad ad and get no return than who's fault is it? Your for either creating a poor ad and/or placing it in teh wrong location... etc..
But does that advertising/account department of say some newspaper give the advertiser the list of subscribers to the newspaper?
equating internet advertising with phone bills is perhaps not the way to figure it. You advertise on TV during the superbowl you pay a set price, price dependant on which channel you are advertising on.
There are different advertising deals from signs you stick out on teh side of teh road to flyers to....etc..
and all these deals may have different specifics as to cost.
pay per click? Perhaps when the internet gets better mapped into traffic population.... then they can set a fee schedual...
Bottom line, if they don't like the agreement they made with google....
Fraudulent clicks....isn't that the same as MS IE defaulting to using refresh from site, even when its in the cache... so to make their browser appear to be more popular to those who see such information?
fraudulent clicks...... all things considered..... it simply should be figured into the price paid on teh per click trip.
Remove teh fradulent clicks and would the price to pay per click, would it go up?
Its a quality issue, and it does go up in teh rest of teh advertising industry.
Its all about getting a percentage of the clients return on advertising investment thru you.
There is no case here. and it appears that the "sue you" system has entered the advertising industry.....
How much does the court system cost for ad story generation?
Hint: how much did SCO pay for all the stories about its lawsuit against, in essence, FOSS (with an entity figurehead - IBM)???? or did the story writers do it out of teh goodness of their heart? (hint: nobody in a dog eat dog business of teh media knows what heart is, but only to sell more media).
The countries that have the highest amount of software piracy are those countries who's citizens earn such a low annual income that they simply cannot afford to buy the software. To enforce against software piracy in such countries is to suppress the knowledge and expreience, education of the citizens of those country.
Vietnam is such a country and I recall they wanted into WIPO or WTO... but were told that they needed to reduce software piracy before they would even be considered for entrance. How they respoded was to pass some laws or policies that all system sold in teh country were to have FOSS pre-installed.
With such FOSS there is also more inherent respect for the license....
there is not enough of us that have enough experience in dealing with marketing hype to not know, via second nature, that you never never believe marketing hype, but only believe what experience proves. Especially comming from Microsoft, where even experience is questionable.
Software is honestly not patentable, and that is very provable.
To use an analogy, the decimal system is far easier and more powerful to use than the roman numeral system, but it took 300 years for the change over to happen due to the persistance of the roman numeral elite.
Galileo wasn't exorinated untill the early 1990's, long after he was dead... allot of good the exorination did him. But it help the catholic church not run off its followers with silly notions of the earth or man being the center of the universe.
Software patents are like these foolish things of our past.... they will become such as well
Artificial Intelligence is a BY-PRODUCT ILLUSION from the automation of enough of the things that provide for the illusion enough to fool a human into thinking they are interacting with another human.
How close are we to the right thing, real intelligence? Many of us can look in a mirror and see it, While others are condemmed to believing real intelligence is something other than what it is.
We are more likely to get to the fabrication of real intelligence thru genitic engineering, than thru thesum of a by illusion of....immitation/automation of what real intelligence has already figured out.And this does not dismiss the times when something were come up with and set in motion expose new knowledge.... any more than the results of a calculation, we didn't know the answer to until the calculator spit out the results.... would be considered intelligent.
My denial of artificial intelligence isn't a denial, but a recognition of what "artifical" means.
There are alot of artificial people....... so from that point of view.... We have had artifical intelligence for a long time. Major example is the intelligence for waring on iraq...... look how many it fooled as being "intelligent".
Here is more regarding teh creation of this "by-product illusion":
Programming is the act automating complexity, so to make that complexity easier to use and re-use by the user(s) of the complexity. Programminbg is a recursive act of building upon or with the automation others before you have already created.... unless you program in machine language of 0's and 1's. The recursive actions in this have been identified as nine actions we all apply in anything we do.
1) We start/stop things 2) we keep track of where we are in doing things 3) we determine where we are getting input from 4) we determine where we are sending uotput to 5) we get input 6) we do thing one step at a time (sequencial - where parrallel is two or more sequencial steps) 7) we look up the meaning of things, dictionary, catalog, medical reference, programming reference, etc..and take action based upon finding 8) we identify thing, so to determine wht action to talk base upon identification 9) we constrain what we look up and identify, as you would not start at the first page of a dictionary to look up the word "sex" but sonctrain it to the "S" section, etc..
These actions can be and are being converted to the environment or computing so to be available for use by anyone using a computer. What they provide is general automation ability, where even the act of programming can be automated. In understanding the recursive depth of these actions in application, you know they provide control points for anything you can do but want to automate. You only need to identify the action to apply as a control point.
The test is to try not using any of those above actions, computer wise or even not computer related. You can't do it, at best only try and fool yourself by changing meanings of those descriptions.
Artificial Intelligence is a BY-PRODUCT ILLUSION..... that we can create, but to do so sooner, means we have to make these action function common place, like the common place universal language of the hindu arabic decimal system with its zero place holder.
In analogy, today we program as roman numeral specialists... elitist... and have higher positions in societry that we would if we did it the more powerful decimal system way.
Sure there are some very complex algorythims developed contributing to the field of "Artificial Intelligence" but occums razor has perhaps plenty of cutting to do to reduce it to the simpler and more powerful..
Robotics.....input and output devices....
the so call "real AI" some draw a connection to Shock Level 4.....I suppose the decimal system was like a shock level four to the romans....And they suppressed it for 300 years.
The defeat of such advancements and potential of is the act of denial..
Any effort to deny humans to take the choice of providing vlaue in a world contribution is very very exposing of those in support of such a bill.
The reprocussions of such a bill passing is most of all exposing of the human advancement need to get rid of systems that allow such small small people to even considered such a bill.
Market is based upon choice, consumer choice. It is the consumer choice at the heart of Free open source software beginnings and expansion.
The small people involved in support of such a bill seriously fail to understand teh reprocussions they will face.
... as more people get on the band wagon the harder it is for the pony to pull it.... and the market gets strained....
of course the difference here is going to be determined by how well such online classified reduce the use of ebay....
And there is nothing stopping google or anyone else from also providing such classified service.
Why would MS be announcing this now?
T0 get the competition going or are they just market testing?
If the market isn't there, and they drop it... it won't be the first time.... that is what market testing is for... and MS is really little more than a marketing company...
Who knows, maybe the traditional paper based classified publishers, who really know teh ins and outs of alot of the process, have never thought of doing it online...
that MS is first and formost a marketing company where its second place position is heald by the legal department which also partakes in chess (the idea of sacrificing your own to obtain an advantage worth more then teh sacrifice). Third place at MS is not even innovation but rather imitation or buyout...
When you understanding this, you understand MS. To understand MS you know that what was once something ignored by MS, then laughed at by MS and then lied about by MS.... there is something of history in teh direction of open source software.
To compare Windows to Linux is like comparing carrots to meat and potatos....
....not whether or not there is intelligent life outside of our popular belief otherwise, but of the apparent ignorance of those who think they need to be prepaired to battle with such life that would obviously have such technology, experience and understanding of the human species as to not let us advance enough to present such a possibility of being a threat.
Like the mentality the US seems to want want to impose on the rest of the world.
I'd imagine such life would be far better skilled at techniques of deception, easy to apply and safe from proof, then we as a species has yet to master even the kindergarden level of. And this is not contrary of those who claim alien life exist, but have no proof of it....
Then there is the big picture.... What its all about. In the simplest of terms "survival" the survival of conscious intelligent life needed to maintain the ever expanding matter in existance (what all exist in existance), in all the forms matter can be made to exist in.
When you are the only thing existing, how do you know you are not dying? By knowing you are growing!
What assurance do you have that such important conscious life will continue to exist, unless you help to cultivate it, farm it, influence it as well as make matter in space for it to exist on, like this galaxy containing this planet..
Only when the level of mans intelligence reaches the level required of entering the civilization of the universe, will it be allowed to.
There is no place for war mongers in the civilization of the universe, any more then there is a place in todays society for roman numeral mathmatics, magic spells, flat planets center of the universe.
Sales of Windows systems accounted for 36.9 percent of all server revenue in the quarter, versus 31.7 percent for Unix and 11.5 percent for Linux.
math..... the difference between unix type or oriented systems and windows???
Of the unix type there is Linux, FreeBSD, MacOSX, unix (of course), etc. Due to the licensing of such FOSS amd its packaging (you don't always need a server edition of a distribution to install a server) it is difficult to genuunely track teh use of such FOSS server usage. But do the math, unix style servers are greater in number than windows based servers. and of course there will be more servers in general in use tomorrow than today...
Then there is the company compatability and administrator education/expierance being tied to a windows past, as the company grows and need to either replace their servers with newer hardware able to handle more. Such purchases often include windows server upgrades, perhaps to help take advantage of the newer hardware.
What of FOSS server software? The capabilities are not static, but improving as well. Maybe there is just less need to learn more to use its next release... making it easier for the foss experienced server administrator to not need to buy the next major release and support, but rather to upgrade less at any given time as time goes by. A process where there is less likelyhood of massive user rush to patch holes and cause a ripple thru industry from such common and wide taxation of resources from administrator to user.
So maybe foss is a slower upgrade process, but its also going to obtain in such trade off, a reduced risk base.
At any rate FOSS is not declining in use. Its growing in all the ways and places it does.
Of course non of this counters teh fact that MS lies every chance they get, about FOSS. And that's the real point. If they are as good as they claim, then certainly they must realize that lying is not consistant with public relations marketing, and certainly only shows doubt about their own product and/or sales pitch.
The universe that is just beyond teh open source software stepping stone.
The universe where software is inherently free due to is ease of creation even by some of teh least experienced computer users (as we know them today)
an analogy of which might be the difference between using the limited in calculation ability, roman numeral system in comparison to teh far easier to use hindu-arabic decimal system.
The place where MS wants to control, but simply can't get there without stepping across on teh FOSS steppng stone.... The place where MS simple can't exist.
What they are trying to do with "Software Factories" and the common language infrustructure, vista, etc...
But it is the place where "being successful by making people need you via complexication beyond what is actually neded" simply cannot exist without being obvious to teh most nieve (a person nieve of high level math will still know the decimal system is easier to use than teh roman numeral system).
MS knows they cannot compete with open source software...... why else do they lie every chance they get, about it?
Recently there was an article regarding a clone researcher being looked upon as being bad, when the fact of teh matter is that he only tried to hide the dishonesty of his associates upon his finding out they had lied regarding their donorship.
Now that's a case of one level disconnection from the initial deception. And consider what happened to him for it.
This MS constant lying is first degree deception, outright intentional..... and they are very persistant about it.
So why are they still in business?
Or is this only more proof that they are not genuine researchers or innovators, just used car salesmen selling the research and innovation others outside of them have done, as their own?
Its ok to lie, if you are a salesperson, but not a genuine researcher..... right?
Artificial Intelligence - nothing is naturall that stupid.
Artificial Intelligence is a by product illusion of simply automating enough to cause a human to think they are interacting with another human,
Things like "shock Level 4" are easily defeated by the human characteristic of "denial" or what good is a knowledge or technology if nobody uses it?
An example of this is the fact that we today have the knowledge, natural resources, man power and eben the financial resources to make major improvement in the human living condition in the whole world.... but we are not using it for that.
Maybe what needs to be realized is that google is not just google..... they do get alot of the resources they then make available to us all, from others....
So where is AI when I do a google search for something and get everything but???
There are many many ways to think, computers will never be anything more than an extension of human, as that is calling them what they really are, an extension of those who created and use them.
At best, all of this computer advancement will apex such that we humans become better and have a more complete understanding of reality, both physical and abstract.
What is google? the process of information collection and sorting for presentation to the human searcher.
The concepts of IP and original intents are all well and fine, but like all things man creates, he can and does distort for personal unfair gain.
The original terms of copyright were for a much shorter term than they are today. Patents were originally for physical inventions, after they are proven to work.
The problem lies in the distortion of these concepts in application and to address this it's important to address the incentive behind creating such distortion.
Both copyright and patents are based upon the "can not mentality" You cannot use without approval.... Of course patents don't give teh inventor or patent holder the right to produce what they have a patent for, as a bomb may be patented but it doesn't give the inventor the right to produce it.
There is a place for common sense in all of this. But the otherwise "can not" mentality is suppressing to an ever increasing rate of advancement.
Nobody today can come up with an original idea that doesn't have a basis on what others before them have done.
It is a human quality, right and duty to build upon what others before us have done.... it is the quality that allows us to stand out and above other life forms, such as plant, animal, etc..
We have teh ability to think in terms of high level abstraction, and not only that but we build whole societies and world systems on such abstractions.
There is less and less room for the "can not" mentality as technology advances at an ever increasing rate and the world gets more person to person intouch with each other from around teh world (exposing the deceptions of war mongers and their propoganda of things like "russia is evil"...where everyday people, by far, make up the majority past 99% of the 6 billion population)...
"Can Not" mentality is becomming more for those who can only be more then others by suppressing others..
As a species, we have the abstract ability, the knowledge from its use to further alter natural resources to our benefit, and the man power to certainly be working towards a time where the devided and unbalanced (lacking genuine self check) economic systems are going to show their age and deteriation to where we need to go on teh next stepping stone of human advancement.
And of course there will be those in opposition to change... like the music industry..... But open source software is showing us all how to do it, how to conmtribute to a benefit we all can share in, use and contribution.
The original point of IP rights was to provide incentive to be creative and inventive, so as to benefit society as a whole. But during a time of sparceness of human and natural reaources, including communication.
As that sparceness vanishes, the mode and method of advancement only naturally changes. How well we adapt in a timely manner determines who will be leading the world in its natural human evolution...
The people here being the artist and their ability to make use of the internet to introduce themselves and promote themselves via the internet. And to do so to the point of having enough opf a following to then approach the industry with bargaining power.... "I'm taking bids on who will giove me the best deal"...
Everybody benefits this way... as the music industry wouldn't then need the risky practice of subsidizing of newbies (often failures) with profits made from the established artaist that would really be better in the pockets of the established, where it belongs. Such subsidizing is somewhat anti-competitive for the artists.
On the public side, we get to better determine what is good and bad music. While having a wider rasnge of free music from samples and newbie trying to make an impression... Arrangements (music) and re-mixes can take a good song, shown to have public appeal and made better, then released for purchase... etc...
Where does this put the industry? Quite different than it is today, slimmed down and more efficient. And certainly not so damn greedy... cause greedy really wouldn't get the bids...
The only thing that case proves is that the US failed to ask the people regarding the idea of software patents, for feed back.
For the People by the People??????
Europe recently did it and consider the results.
God or what ever superior force , such as father physics and mother nature said nothing in support for software patents. That idea is totally man made and in regards to the top three (or four) things that are not patentable. Natural Law, Physical Phenomenon, abstract ideas.... and mathmatical algorythims (which is really of the first three)
Man has claimed many things to be something they are not.... this is another case of that and the proof is at hand that states softare is not patentable.
Simoply put, it is provable that software is not patentable.
Software is genuinely not patentable.....

Now the thing is, can you write an algorythim/program to do the same thing in such a manner that a picture compressed by it can be uncompressed by jpeg engines, without infringing upon the copyright?
if you can't then....still do the right thing and oppose the fraud of software patents.

But it won't be called the boston tea party, nor "the great software flap"
It's be something like "the great quiet private digital dump-n-flush"
MS knows they cannot compete with open source software...... why else do they lie every chance they get, about it?
..... and they are very persistant about it.
This MS constant lying is first degree deception, outright intentional
So why are they still in business?
Or is this only more proof that they are not genuine researchers or innovators, just used car salesmen selling the research and innovation others outside of them have done, as their own?
Its ok to lie, if you are a salesperson, but not a genuine researcher..... right?
... from this new field, in general?
there is a saying "its only wrong if you get caught".
We all know another industry that practices that, don't we?
Show me!!!
Artificial Intelligence - nothing is naturall that stupid.
2 /www.worldgame.org/wwwproject/index.shtml
Artificial Intelligence is a by product illusion of simply automating enough to cause a human to think they are interacting with another human,
Things like "shock Level 4" are easily defeated by the human characteristic of "denial" or what good is a knowledge or technology if nobody uses it?
An example of this is the fact that we today have the knowledge, natural resources, man power and eben the financial resources to make major improvement in the human living condition in the whole world.... but we are not using it for that.
http://www.unesco.org/education/tlsf/theme_a/mod0
How well we adapt in a timely manner determines who will be leading the world in its natural human evolution...
...in its proper place.
Simoply put, it is provable that software is not patentable.
.... however it is copyrightable.
Copyrights last alot longer.... infinity according to the changing of laws to extend then before they expire..
Now the thing is, can you write an algorythim/program to do the same thing in such a manner that a picture compressed by it can be uncompressed by jpeg engines, without infringing upon the copyright?
if you can't then....still do the right thing and oppose the fraud of software patents.
