VCs simply are not that smart.

Come one guys, lets consider the coder base difference between Open Source and Proprietary, what the adverage coder earns for his work.

Let me suggest that VC's, if provided a free worker base, would still manage to lose money for the most part.

Isn't that what this is really saying?

Open source is done in a mode of sharing code, and this includes the benefit of not having to start from scratch.

If you cannot take something of such nature and cause improvement to hapren that are of benefit in value return to you, then you genuinely are not very smart.

Maybe neither are those who get VCs to give them money and then fail.

NASA stories of recent seems to suggest they have something of a clue.

    Here is an example:

who would find benefit in investing in GIMP? or CUPS improvements?

    Printer and paper supply companies.

Investing in FOSS to improve the market for another product.

And what would anyone object to having such investors/sponsors lised in the "about" menu item and any other place that is non-interfering with the operation of teh application?

How about computer hardware vendors... Providing a FOSS OS with their system has to have some value in improving price performance of their product.

Seems to me there is a large failure to understand indirect profiting off of FOSS, cept for maybe those who pursue system support.

The Big question: How do you profit off of that which is free?

    A: Indirectly.

Just as Open Source tracks code contributions, it can and should track sponsors. A matter of credit where credit is due.

What occured to me afterwards is that people back then had teh same eyesight problems as they do today, but today we have corrective vision tools, like glasses and lasic surgery.

But the story is really quite interesting. From it is easy to deduct that they were falling the trees away from the river. (Falling is a term to describe the cutting the last part of the tree from the opposite side in which you want it to fall, so not to get your axe stuck as the tree begins to.) As such the, the swing was such that the axe head, upon comming lose during a swing, went into the rapidly flowing river - a little bit of white water - enough to block clear sight of the axe head, especially if you have bad eyesight to begin with.

But the Master/lord saw where it was, and grabbing a forked branch (of which there were plenty of - a by-product of cutting trees down) and put it into the water to hook it into the fork.

As the water was moving, such an act caused not only the water to take an altered path, clearing the sight of the axe head for the others to see, but also helped to raise the axe head up to the surface (like skiing on water). But the branch was either not strong enough to lift it out of the water, or such an attempt could have been to risky, as the rushing water may have been helping to keep the axe head in place in the stick fork.

Being the that lord (landlord??) was holding this stick, he probably couldn't reach the axe head himself, so told one of the others to grab it.

But considering why they were following Jesus (to learn how to excape the dishonesty of society) they just needed an excuse to be able to eat what they brought without letting others know what they had brought (so to better avoid possible attempts to steal from them). you have a choice, but you may not like it, because it requires full out honesty about software, and that is something you may not be willing to do.

To prove that software is not patentable means that it must be made easy enough to create that its common for anyone to do so, just as it is common for people to use a calculator, probably instead of doing the math manually.

Can software be automated to such a point?

Absolutely, in fact that the is the ultimate goal of the act of programming:

Programming is the act of automating complexity, typically made up of a collection of previously automated complexities (machine language is perhaps the baseline of this process) but programming is done so to make the complexity easy for the user to use and reuse, thru a simple to use interface. This is a recursive act such that complexities you create simplified interfaces to could be used in teh creation of even more automation...

Ultimately reaching the goal of programming is a working yourself out of a job, in a way. But you have to ask yourself, do you really want to have been using the roman numeral system instead of teh simpler and more powerful hindu-arabic decimal system?

Point being, your vested interest in your career of being a programmer is perhaps keeping you from the honesty of the purpose and goal of programming enough to lie to the general public as you and many others in your situation, proprietary and open source have both lied so to protect your trade, as the roman numeral accountants argued "how can nothing have value -- regarding the zero place holder" so to protect their social standing and industry.
