It is a GUID for the custom function, not the drive itself. It allows applications to identify what features the drive supports, they can't track you with it.
I haven't tried this in a while, but... If in Win98 you have "client for MS networks" bound to a dial-up adapter and enable file sharing, it will warn you that you may be sharing files with the internet.
I don't know how you could protect users with broadband connections. I suppose one solution would be to only enable file sharing over NetBEUI by default, since it isn't routable. It still wouldn't protect cable modem users from other users on the same segment, however.

It's a threat because when prices start falling all the valuable, richly-optioned employees are no longer quite so well compensated. People who aren't paid what they feel they are worth tend not to stick around too long, especialy in this job market.
See Vietnam. I'm no military scholar, but I doubt that the military would be able to occupy and hold this country against an armed citizenry determined to resist it. Not to mention the demoralizing effects on the troops from fighting their brothers and sisters. Which, I suspect, is why the govt. tends to keep such a suspicious eye on all of those paramilitary organizations.
I've got nightly binary tarballs if anyone wants them. No mail or news, so it's a svelt 3MB;-). Be gentle though, it's a DSL line.

You're essentially describing Freenet, or rather, a major component of what Freenet does. Data makes it's way between several intermediate nodes before reaching it's ultimate destination. Internode traffic is encrypted as well as locally stored data, making identification of large nodes tricky. Of course, if you run a large node yourself you can determine what nodes are critical routers for your section of the network.
Of course, it is yeet to be seen whether this scheme will scale either.
I'm very satisified with them. I had some periodic connectivity issues for the first couple of days after I signed up, but they cleared it up before it even became enough of a problem for me to contact them.
The same thing hapenned to me with the CD Universe break in awhile back. The only difference is that my bank, Bank Boston (Now Fleet) charged my account for 2-day rushing me a new card I didn't ask for. Not only that, but the card number in question was expired, but they replaced my _new_ card anyway. Check your next bank statement carefully.
HIPPA will require all EDI transactions to be encrypted, first over the Internet, and later even LAN traffic must be encrypted.
At IDX Systems we're using PGP to send claims transactions to clearing houses.
Gas: Take the total number of gallons of fuel used by cars ina year, divide it by the number of dollars spent on road infrastructure, you now have a tax rate in $/gal.
Cigs: Well, in this hypothetical libertarian government, there would be no tobacco subsidies. And presumably no government healthcare for the people who get lung cancer, so there probably wouln't be any taxes on butts -- the gov. doesn't spend any money on the tobacco industry, so there isn't anything to recoup.
Disclaimer: I'm not a libertarian, this is just how I imagine it would work.
Jim Davis owns the Trademark on the Garfield characters. He may or may not own the copyright of a particular strip, but it is the (TM) that keeps you from distributing your own Garfield(TM) cartoons.
If you're using Windows, check out Gnotella it allows you to set total number of uploads, and throttle bandwith. The UI, however, sucks rocks and often becomes unresponsive. It's also not Free.
I've been lurking on the development list since March, and I haven't noticed anything like that. The lead developers are just very adamant about preserving the integrity of the system, and they're not afraid to tell some one "no". I would rather wait a while and see something like this come out right the first time than have it get damaged by coming out ineffiecent and full of security holes.
ControlIT 5.0 will disable itself after 1 month if you don't register it and use the user number from the website + the registration number to generate a license file. Not quite as anoying as checking in once a month, but still pretty terrible.
I Think You Mean cmd under NT; it doesn't have command.com.
H:\DANELLO>cmd
Microsoft(R) Windows NT(TM)
(C) Copyright 1985-1996 Microsoft Corp.
H:\danello>command
Microsoft(R) Windows NT DOS
(C)Copyright Microsoft Corp 1990-1996.
CMD.EXE starts the Windows NT command interpreter, while COMMAND.COM starts NTVDM - the NT Virtual Dos Machine. I guess that there are probably diffrences between the two, but I'm usually running CMD or bash.

Bolo was the most fun multiplayer game I've ever played. I really wish the author of the game was more open to pporting/cloning it. I haven't played it since I left the high school Mac lab behind.
My old Mac Plus had the star headed bolts holding it shut. I found that the right sized flat head screwdriver would wedge in there and open it without damaging the screws. I've always scratched my head when people talked about how hard the old Macs were to open. Did the other "toaster" models have some more complex fastening system?
What I never got was that it took a whole ammendment to outlaw alchohol, but they can outlaw these other drugs with much less drastic measures. Anyone out there know what the precident was that allowed for these laws to be made?
I thought fair use was strictly a copyright concept. You simply are not allowed to make use of some one else's trakemarked logos without permission, and if they don't police it, they loose it. I think you are, however, allowed to use _altered_ trademarked logos for the purpose of parody.

Newbury Comics... They're wicked cheap ;-)
For a while, DOS 6.22 was available on MS's ftp site. I don't know if it still is though...

What about the ROUS's?
Rodents of Unusual Size? I don't believe they exist!
