What you mean doing their job is bad? Enforcing the law(s)? Who'd have thought of that. If you don't like the law, allow me to point you at your nearest government body. Pretty simple isn't it?
Well that's what they did in Canada. My ISP has a 60gb/mo cap, so does their next competitor(bell) on DSL. I'd end up paying oh $20ish a month more for 20gb extra. Yet they're both happy to have VOD services that use your internet connection and suck up your bandwidth.
I've mentioned this before, but law enforcement doesn't really have the money to investigate this type of stuff. Even the guys in specialized divisions don't, the way you generally get there though is starting as a beat cop and working your way up with a shown interest. That leaves oh...99% of the people who know what they're doing, doing something else.
Those of you in the/. crowd besides myself going into law enforcement raise your hands. I'm going to guess the pickings will be slim. I'll hazard even after I'm hired, it will be around 4-6 years before I'm into that division at the service I'm applying at. I'm going there because we need to pick up the pace on stuff like this. Police are seriously falling behind because there's no one.
The reality is in most cases, police services or forces(whichever you prefer or whatever they're called where you live), don't always have the resources. Then you get into jurisdiction. It's a messy convoluted processes when dealing with internet crime. Things are shifting but that's just how it is, the police are about 5-8 years behind because they don't have the funds and resources to deal with it. So it's a non issue.
Even specialized groups that deal with this stuff are really short on proper resources.
While they're not the big problem that everyone makes them out to be, they do exist and they can't be reformed. Simple as that.
Lets not forget about that, and I'm talking about someone here who's dealt in the criminal justice side of things. Along with cops and the crown who've been in this for 30 years, they don't change. The problem is, politicians turn this into witch hunts. Bottom feeders exist. They're the ones who've progressed up the criminal profiling scale from simply snapping pictures of kids showing their underwear at *insert place* because they're innocent, and carefree. And they're taking pictures, to they're getting ready to go snag a kid, or already doing something to one.
The reality is I don't have any illusions about what this is. Or the current state. It's the bandwagoneers that make it more difficult to do the job properly.
It can depending on the brand of gun. Some brands are more accurate then others are, but usually if you're doing readings on an angle and you get a higher reading you're bumping some speed off either for the benefit of the doubt unless they fail the attitude test. And yeah, a lot of people on the road these days fail that when they could walk away with just a verbal warning.
Really it boils down to two things. Either the run reads accurately, or it reads high--and you're going much faster then the gun is recording. In which case the gun is giving you the break. That's all there is to it. In most places you won't find radar positions on a or near a slope because of that. Curves are tolerable, but a small stretch of straight road is best.
I'm not a radar tech, I have gone with more then my fair share of members of the OPP on traffic enforcement on rural/city and 401 enforcement to have an idea of how to do it. From car/sitting/stationary bridge/roadside. And yes, I've pinged vehicles.
No there's no ticket quota system. Cops can write as many tickets as they want.
Apparently you've never seen AP or teflon(illgeal in 90% of places) coated rounds. They go through both body armor that the boom chuckalucka guys wear, and regular kevlar vests. Kevlar is good stuff, it'll stop a lot. Cop killer bullets aren't a myth, criminals have used those two, and for awhile the talons were very popular until they were outlawed as well.
Up here in Canadaland, there's been a couple of incidents of cops being shot at by criminals(aka drug smugglers with nothing to lose) with homemade teflon coated rounds.
That's why they're directly interfering with broadband accesses at the ISP level right? Because we all know when the average person has 60gb/mo to play with and are charged $25 extra as a 'use access fee' by Bell and Rogers, content innovation is going to be messed up. With 4 people here we can blow through 60GB in no time at all.
Gotta remember in Canada the CRTC would jump all over that. Demand 40-50% Canadian content, that money go into a giant slush fund for "canadian" producers and all you would hear is a giant sucking noise as everything went bad.:p
It's not a bad idea, but yeah. The CRTC would just pull a massive pissing match over it especially with what's going on now with Bell/Rogers/etc and all the other internet related crap we have going on up here right now.
Biggest problem from my end? If you're still using apps that need specific unicode locations get used to using applocale. Otherwise, I haven't run into a single problem so far. I moved from XP64 to Win7x64, and I'll say I'm quite happy with it. Now the UAC on the other hand annoys the piss out of me still, so it died.
There are programs that I use that cause the UAC to go nuts for about 10mins even when they're setup properly, I don't need that hassle. If you asked me 4 months ago if I'd be sticking with XP64 the answer would have been yes, now not a chance I'm happy with this.
... Whatever country you live in. Trust me, it's part of the plan.
I'll use the proverbial "I can throw a quarter and hit the US," from where I'm sitting comment.
I'm not sure what they're thinking but it really does baffle me sometimes, since we have exactly the same shows broadcast up here yet they can't be seen. I can tell you that most Canucks who even have the smallest bit of tech savviness to them, will do one of two things. Let it burn in cold snowy fire, or download it through a usenet provider if it's really needed.
Most people are pretty sure they get paid well in Canada as it is.:P
Not the same in every place not even in every state, let alone every province. I'll use an example for my own province, there's at least 4 taxes on fuel. Flat tax, 2 scaled taxes(GST/PST), and a excise tax(scaled). Not counting "pre" taxes at the refinery which are also included in excise. Various states also use a scaled excise tax.
Gas taxes cover the costs on repairs, and the more expensive the fuel. The more expensive gas, the more the input revenue is. You know what the real problem is? All that money is put into general revenue, not for roads. So instead of paying directly for what it should be. That gas tax money is paying for in most cases education, or services.
"Citizens" aren't required to use them in order to save someones life while flying down the 400 series. Police and EMS are. But I suppose we can go back to the good old days of the 70's. You know, arrest someone, and hope that the shop keeper will call the station for a car. Or maybe we can even go back to attempts at memorization of profiles, well that's a fancy one. Especially with international travel being what it is now.
Unfortunately, the citizens have proven in Ontario that while some can be trusted; there's a whole pile more that can't be. Like the kid who smeared himself down by London while answering the phone. Or the several dozen hit and runs in the GTA, rear-enders and so on. Accidents have jumped since this was included.
Your comment is something I'd expect from someone who hasn't ever worked in/with/dealt in any form of law enforcement or EMS too. You're just an idiot who don't understand the law like most people in this thread.
Half the police forces in Ontario don't have terminals in their cars, and if you do there is an exception clause in the HTA. Use of radios are covered under exceptions to do your duty/work for public safety. Same with carrying a gun, and you're required to have your walkie talkie on at all times unless you're off duty(varies on dept. policy).
Luminosity is terrible in a lot of them. They're too washed out even the 'ultra brights'. You can see the flicker, as well as the cycle pulse from the bulb. Which in my case leads to terrible earth shattering migraines. Anything smaller then a 4ft florescent tube does the same thing, and those are pushing it.
I could go on but most of it for me is either health/mental related. Take a head injury that messes up with your eyes and the world becomes a new and interesting place.
Still holds to be true. As the executable is still encrypted in various cases, since they're encrypted not only do you still not own the product but now you're in some cases getting stuck with a special type of DRM. On top of this, that encrypted exe has a tendency to not work with many of the extended scripting engines that are in use with a variety of mods, and parts of the modding community at large. Modders being what they are, are unwilling to break said encryption to give people a chance to use these tools.
This leaves those people with the same digital downloads in a unique spot. Violate *insert law here* by getting a cracked exe, which may invalidate their license, or lose out on a chance to enjoy various mods.
As well, in many cases those same copies require special patches, and also require specialized versions of expansions to work properly. It's a fine idea, but the entire premise of digital downloads are flawed when they stop people from enjoying the product they've generally paid for, and in some cases leave them only renting at a whim.
No. It means that people have yet to realize that physical copies = ownership. Digital copies = you're SOL if they decide to ban your account for *insert reason here*.
Ah yes. The difference between Linux and MS is there generally is a dedicated group writing drivers for one subset of users. Where as in the other case sometimes you need to write your own, and when something goes bad in the second case. You can blame yourself, or do some mucking and hacking to fix it. Sometimes you can in the first case too(replace a dll, modify a few ini files, and it's all good.) But the windows world of driver hacking is pretty piss poor.
The problem in this case is, there are some funky Win7 drivers out there masquerading as Win7 but still Vista drivers that aren't 100% compatible with the new kernel. This is causing some issues for people, especially from companies who have a track record of 'no drivers' or drivers 9mo after a new OS release. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about on that.
Sure, it's insightful...but funnier than hell.
Sometimes insightful and funniness go hand in hand. Sadly /. doesn't have a Insightfully funny mod option. But they have 3 for trolling!
What you mean doing their job is bad? Enforcing the law(s)? Who'd have thought of that. If you don't like the law, allow me to point you at your nearest government body. Pretty simple isn't it?
No no. Canada knows nothing of Nuclear technology. Just remember that, not like we're pioneers in the field along with Japan and S.Korea.

Well you might drown someone with it!
Dihydrogen Monoxide...the most hazardous substance known to man. It kills hundreds of thousands of people every year. We need to ban it quick!

I was looking at the sunny land of Somalia for a economic recovery plan, but I suppose Zimbabwe will work too.
