What nonsense. The only reason India was closely allied with the Soviets was because Pakistan used to suck up to the USA, and used to receive all kinds of assistance from the US. India wasn't as powerful then as it is now, so there weren't really too many options with us. That does not make India any less democratic, so STFU - or is critical reasoning a bit too tough for you? Going by that logic, since the USA and Pakistan have had. and continue to have, this long love affair, one could say that the US is a terrororist-sponsor nation, just like Pakistan!
MOD parent up. While not all the ninth-graders will opt for a career in IT, almost all of them will have to deal with computers in some form or the other! Much better to teach them spreadsheets, how to use the power of the WWW effectively and safely, basic and simple databases and task automation, etc. In my view, teaching such young kids these things is far better than teaching them programming.
Nobody told you to adopt corruption, which by the way, is not a uniquely Indian/Chinese attribute, as you seem to imply. India does have a monstrous bureaucracy, but I'm really not sure what that has to do with 'globalization' in the context of this article.
RIM isn't doing India a favour by 'giving us their technology' as you put it. Had that been the case, they'd have shown the middle finger to the Indian Govt. as soon as this issue came up. They need India more than India needs them - fledgling Indian telecom companies like Micromax and Karbonn are waiting to grab the market, and RIM knows that.
Finally, the issue of whether or not the Indian govt. should monitor suspects (with a warrant, btw) is best left to us. We'll write petitions, vote out the Govt. or protest on the streets if we feel that the Govt. ought to stop monitoring suspected blackberry communication (even with a warrant). It is not RIM's job to decide for us, and they better accept the demands of the democratically elected Indian Govt. if they want to do business here. Leave it to us Indian citizens to take on the Govt. We'll do it if we want to.
This article is about India, and about the threat of terrorists attacking India, thereby making our Government demand that blackberry allow intelligence agencies to monitor communications (and that too only after a proper warrant has been obtained).
You might, or might not, agree with these fears and the need to monitor communication, but when you make comments about 'freedom fighters' in this article, one would assume immediately that you're referring to anti-India Islamic terrorism. Not sure why you've written that long post about Israel and the Arabs as a response to this article that talks about India!
Frankly, it's the Indians who need to be telling you this. Globalization doesn't mean you get to pick and choose those attributes of trade which fit your needs best. When you understand this so well, why is it that we constantly hear angry voices from the USA about outsourcing, which is a direct result of globalization? Not a single India related post on slashdot is complete without an anti-outsourcing rant by some smartass. Why is it that I don't see guys like you replying to such people with something like: "Hey, this is globalization, deal with it"?
And moreover, the piece of news in the article about MS getting system crash reports caused by 'script kiddies testing their malware' 7000-9000 times per SECOND is just too goddamn high. I'd say, take this article with a drum of salt.
Here, I must disagree with you when you say "dead is just dead". I can write a poignant account of how a stoning actually takes place, but you can google around yourself. And well, that particular quote might have been translated wrongly, but you can't deny that he has made several other outrageous statements - he has a history of making insane statements. What about his comments that "South Koreans must be slapped till they become human" and "Australians are a bunch of cow herders" and "England has nothing. Its inhabitants are not human"
You can't attribute all of them to bad translation, can you? I stand my my statement that this guy is a nutjob (note: I speak of Ahmedinejad, and not the entire Iranian populace).
They keep threatening to wipe an entire country off the map. And that country happens to be an American ally. Moreover, they're ruled by nutjobs and mad mullahs who keep saying things like "South Koreans should be slapped till they become human", "Australians are a bunch of cow herders", and so on. These are official statements from the Iranian regime, remember. The regime is seriously insane and unstable. And yeah - they keep passing sentences to have people stoned to death even today.
As of today, India and Pakistan are separate countries. Iran is a third, totally unrelated country. And no, your shrill cries of 'Islamophobia' are laughable. I wouldn't necessarily "hate hearing of the Indian Muslim population growing by leaps and bounds" as you put it, but I do hate hearing unsubstantiated bullshit like 'India's Muslim population is almost 700 million'. Tommy rot! Like I said earlier, you're talking out of a rarely seen orifice. If you contend that India has 700 million Muslims you need to tell us how you came up with such incredible nonsense - anything to back up your assertions?
Only one flaw in your excellently written post. Most people in India support this kind of monitoring because most people perceive terrorism as a big threat. Even though there hasn't been a terror attack after November 2008, that Nov 08 attack was so horrendous that the repercussions are still felt. It kind of shook up the nation, and has had the same effect on India as 9/11 had on the USA.
Yahbut - there is absolutely nothing one can do against "kill them all and let God sort them out" type of terrorists a.k.a. suicide bombers. That's a totally different discussion.
Cowardly Anonymous one: This case was sadly, the result of a horrendous miscommunication between the police and the cellphone service provider (Airtel). If you have googled carefully enough, you'd have seen that he was found innocent and let off in 50 days. His case got unprecedented media coverage, and this man has sued both, the police and Airtel. So your attempt to project India as a police state in the league of Saudi Arabia falls flat - try again or troll harder.
Go away troll. It's not as if the Hindus, Christians, Buddhists, Atheists etc. have all got themselves castrated after 2001. What you're saying is that the Muslim population of India, which was 130 million in 2001, is now close to 700 million. What the hell - even someone with a minimum amount of common sense would shy away from posting such bullshit.
And what 'Western part of India' is Muslim? The maximum Muslim population in India is in the Northern state of Uttar Pradesh (and of course Kashmir). I have a feeling you are generating your "statistics" out of a rarely seen orifice
I stopped reading when I saw the 'neither does Pakistan' bit. Would be good if you did a Google search for 'Pakistan ISI terrorist support wikileaks'. You will change your opinion pretty soon.
Dude - you have access to Google, Wikipedia, and the whole uncensored internet. it isn't too tough to do some basic research on such well known statistics. The percentage of Muslims in India FYI is 13.6%.
That's the tragedy of the democratic/lobbying setup - sometimes I am envious of the Chinese for the way they can simply order vast systemic changes like this and implement it successfully too! In India too, if the Government were to issue such an order tomorrow, or something similar, there will be protests, strikes by labor unions, extensive media coverage, interviews with ruling politicians and opposition party members, sound bytes by 'economic experts' on primetime TV - and in the end, the Government will have to roll back the order.
Not that I didn't accept it, read my posts above. But I have a strong feeling you didn't understand what this entire 'oriental' discussion is about. Either you didn't read what's written, OR you were unable to comprehend.
Can you let me know what you understand from the Grandparent's post?
"Uploading of Fake/Morphed Photo: When it is found that a member has uploaded fake / morphed photo, DTP will take legal action with the help of Cyber Crime Cell - Delhi Police, Inernet/Telecom Service Provider, Facebook (Now they have a office in India), under IT Act. Members are warned not to attempt any misadventure on this account as we take this act very seriously."
And you're deluded if you think the police cannot trace someone through facebook. Create a 'false' profile, a 'real' one, whatever. Are you aware that the police have traced terrorist e-mails and made arrests based on the same? The terrorists obviously didn't leave their real home address around, did they?
"Oh, well since you don't know photoshop, naturally that means that very, very few people know how to use it."
I didn't say that - read the complete post next time. Anyway, what's your point? That a majority of people on the street know photoshop? Really? Try this: talk to two random truck drivers, two random shopkeepers, two random cabbies, two random pedestrians and tworandom guys dressed in a business suit. Ask them if they can photoshop images. In a big city in the US you might find one person out of those who answers in the affirmative. In India it'd be more like 1 out of 20 in a big city. Are you disputing this?
"I think your easy fix solution to a very difficult problem might not work!"
It does work. I drive almost 54 kilometers daily in Bangalore, and I have seen the result of the traffic police's punitive drives. One can literally see a difference. Your argument essentially is on the lines of, 'Orientals' are culturally disposed towards rule breaking, and Afghans are culturally disposed towards terrorism. I call BS. Singapore is full of 'orientals' too - in fact, one in three Singaporeans is a first generation Indian. Singapore traffic and discipline is much better than the US. What about Japan? Taiwan? South Korea? In India too, various cities have different levels of traffic indiscipline - how would you explain that?
What nonsense. The only reason India was closely allied with the Soviets was because Pakistan used to suck up to the USA, and used to receive all kinds of assistance from the US. Do some research before spewing nonsense on slashdot, you nincompoop. India has as many freedoms as any other democracy. Check it.

A real pity.
Perhaps the governments of UAE and India would be satisfied, too, if only they had access to the messages transmitted.
But of course. Like this guy has mentioned here. It's all about getting a server established in India.
