The problem right now is that there is absolutely *no* threat of jail-time for CxO's, no matter *what* professional crime they do ( and, darn little chance for unprofessional crime, but that's another thread).

  2. Actually, more Boy Scout troops in the US were sponsored by the Church of Latter Day Saints (Mormons). They were much of the impetus behind the revising of what "and morally straight." in the Scout Oath means. And, they left in droves when Scouting was opened to girls.

  3. You may know Heathrow, but you don't know a thing about firearms, and not much about aircraft operations. Firearms: Why use a rifle/pistol? A shotgun has a maximum range of about 300 yards. It was *designed* to hit flying targets. In terms of the risks of collateral damage, how about looking at the number of casualties on the ground from the Battle of Britain? Ya know, the one where there was massive air combat over a large urban area (London). Aircraft: so, you have to clean up the debris. You have to do that on a regular basis, due to ground accidents (you didn't think that there would be no collisions between all those trucks that run around the field, did you?), animals (it's a *grassy field*), and wind blown debris. What you're looking for is a zero-risk, zero side effect solution. 'Taint no such thing.

  4. So the classified materials he leaked were: "Protected Search Warrant Materials". If i understand correctly, the entirety of his search warrant was secret. And, he's being charged with leaking, so the "secrets" are already out there. So, it's secret because it's *not* secret. This smells rather "Catch-22" to me.

I'd expect this to play out in Illinois state courts, with Illinois plaintiffs, and FB having to get some Illinois representation, at least for the trial portion. Once it gets to appeals, sure, then it gets to the Federal level.

2: Storing ammunition for the weapon at the same location is illegal during peacetime. What this means is that while people have assault rifles at home legally, they're usable as clubs until wartime (in which case there's much bigger fish to fry) and offer no "home protection" apart from against Americans who try to use them to justify being able to buy assault rifles from wallmart.

That is a mis-reading (or mis-translation) of : http://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/so... You no longer get government issued ammo at home; however, the sturmgeweher uses commonly available ammo that many (most?) keep some at home. Now an argument:

1: As you said, the people who have those weapons are army trained reservists so they've been trained in the safe operation and storage of the weapon (rather than just being some random person who bought an assault rifle at wallmart)

So, you would support general ownership by people that have demonstrated safe operation and storage? Like military veterans? or accomplished competitive shooters?

The simile I've heard is "if the problem you have is yahoos driving through your town doing 100, reducing the speed limit from 25 to 5 won't solve your problems".

A more apt comparison would be, "Yahoos are driving through your town doing 100, so the only solution is to get rid of all speed limits".

You conveniently left out the 2nd half of my argument: the change in laws doesn't reduce the actual murder rate, it only makes new criminals (with victim-less crimes); when the new laws are ineffectual, then *more* laws are passed, making *more* new crimes/criminals.

This is basically the argument from the pro-gun lobby, who by the way, want power to revert to the states except not the power to restrict gun ownership in any way. Federalism for thee, but not for me, in other words.

Similarly to the rights in the 1st, 4th and 5th amendment? Why shouldn't those also be subject to varying enforcement in varying states? Ha! Slashdot sig quote: "The solution of this problem is trivial and is left as an exercise for the reader."

Yeah, I've never understood the "laws are useless because criminals break laws" approach. You hear it a lot in the Second Amendment community.

The simile I've heard is "if the problem you have is yahoos driving through your town doing 100, reducing the speed limit from 25 to 5 won't solve your problems". The perception (and reality, in my opinion) is that the law abiding are saddled with restrictions ranging from hassles to harassment to criminalization (yes, jail time), while the people doing the shooting/wounding/killing aren't deterred The restrictions are then deemed ineffective, and *more* laws are passed. Lather, rinse repeat. Here in California, it's been stated the the goal is to eliminate "gun culture". What's happening is that the law abiding gun culture is being hounded out of existence, leaving criminal gun culture as remainder
