Unlike the Concords, which were also expensive and could actually transport you to useful places in small amounts of time, no celebrity or politicial figure would ever want to spend a couple thousand dollars just go up high in a potentially unsafe civilian spacecrat for the sole purpose of floating around in their seat and coming back down. There are easier and cheaper ways to obtain the thrills of floating in null-g that have been around for years, and not many people have expressed much interest in those, so why would anyone feel differently about the SpaceShipTwos?
you know, today i thought to myself, "why the fuck not", and actually RTFA. i'm glad i did, cuz i a) learned a few things, and b) realized that space may suddenly going to be very important once capitalism moves in, which it inevitably will do.
people pre 1903 (and just post) said things similar to what you wrote. i think there will be many failures, but over time (and if the time it's taken to develop electronics and computer technology and aviation to their current states of the art is any indicator, spacecraft and the technologies necessary to move and support masses of humans in space will be developed quickly.
call me romantic or whatever, but it's total destiny and very inevitable at this point.
regardless of the homeless, slashing or eliminating welfare, anti-drug activities, and most foreign aid would be my first steps in making sure an insurance program, if that's what we're calling it, exists for the elderly and disabled with no other means of supporting themselves...
Social Security could be scaled back by extending the age of collection, etc., and/or it's functionality could be wrapped up into other welfare programs, but it cannot be simply dropped.
how about slashing some welfare programs, getting rid of some overpaid "social workers". i'm starting to think that having the option of investing a portion of my ss deductions into something of my choosing, since what i'll get out of it (if anything) upon retirement will be very small.
we as a society are not going to simply let them starve, go homeless, get sick, etc.
you obviously haven't been outside lately. go look around in the streets of any major city.
how several of these comments are along the lines of "AOL on a resume would look awful", "AOL scabs", "what skills".
many IT managers would snap these folks up. AOL is a very well recognized name. i didn't RTFA, but any IT people getting laid off bothers me, regardless who they work for. i think about what it would be like to be in their shoes.
regardless of where they work (the market seems a little tight lately), remember that they're people just like most of us on/. trying to get by in this crazy field.
no, you're taking it the wrong way - by "it's not some kind of a joke", i wasn't suggesting that you were making light of it - just reiterating the fact that it's a serious issue.
nice to find fellow wv (at least former) follks on/.
and it's not some kind of joke. the same thing could happen anywhere.
my family lives there, i grew up hearijng phrases like "shelter in place", and driving past the flaming stacks and well-manicured grounds of Dow, Dupont, Monsanto, Carbide, Rhone-Poulenc, and others....some of the plants really stink too.
2) Auto Mechanic. I'll do just about anything they ask, because mechanic shops fucking rip you off. A rebuild alternator at autozone is $50 and an hour of my time. Try $300 at a shop. outrageous! I know the mechanic has a wife and kids to feed, but come on, that is just rediculous. I also will do their shocks, belts, oil changes, air filter, etc. I won't swap out a transmission or anything like that, but if its something I can do in a few hours, sure no problem.
a rebuilt alternator at a shop might cost 200 (that's high), and work for a long time. autozone/advance's "rebuilds" are for shit, and in the long run you may be hurting more than helping.
Firefox 1.0 on Panther is much more stable than previous versions.
no, firefox 1.0 on panther sucks balls. i stopped using it in favor of safari, which is faster and doesn't eat up huge gobs of memory and take over the cpu about every few hours.
on linux, it's great and i use it every day at work.
Michael Elkins?
um, i kinda like the way we're doing things now. so thanks - but no thanks. :)

Try doing that with standard html or php...do you want to site while it loads 20 gifs that are more than 100k apiece?

albini rocks, i like his music, but not as much as his "recordings".
her "math" is a complete ripoff of steve albini's breakdown:

i don't know how this can be passed of as hers...
you must not live in south florida. after the hurricanes, there were no lights, and it was absolute insanity, even more insane than usual...

i'm not suprised. "webmaster" is such a meaningless title now. any idiot with a copy of dreamweaver and aol is suddenly a webmaster....
gui toolkit?
if you use a mac, tritag has been working out well for me, and it's free
i work in sunny south florida, and i'm still reading slashdot just like i did in colder climates...
