The system being described fits under the category of Wide Area Persistent Surveillance. This requires far more than a single 5 gram camera carried by a simple drone. Perhaps a few hundred 5 gram cameras with onboard storage and data processing to geo-locate each image and stitch them together in both space and time - or at least store all the relevant data to allow all the data fusion to occur on the ground. Also, operating such a system at 30,000 feet is not practical as high-altitude clouds will often obscure the ground, and at over 5 miles range the optics needed to discern details would be impractical on board an aircraft smaller than an airliner. These types of persistent surveillance systems typically operate much lower.

These systems capture and record everything, and I mean everything, that moves. Nobody that lives beneath such a system will have any privacy. Keep in mind that image data from airborne sensors is often fused with ground sensors, making The Minority Report more of a documentary than a sci-fi thriller.

If a society has problems with crime and corruption, monitoring every detail with such a surveillance system will certainly be entertaining, but it's not likely to actually solve anything, and might lead to even more hilarity.

    Imagine if:

The social ills that create a perpetual class of poor and disadvantaged were recognized and mitigated, especially racism and mental illness.

Human reproduction for the unsuccessful were not subsidized by welfare. If society or the state deems you unable to raise and educate your children, then society or the state takes away your children.

Only those citizens who contribute to society for at least several years are able to receive public benefits such as social security or medicare. Professions that contribute to society: public school teacher, police, fire fighters, soldiers, public healthcare providers, public transportation and infrastructure support and maintenance. Legitimately handicapped are exempted. Morbidly obese and diseases associated with obesity, smoking and drug use are _not_ exempted. The wealthy and highly successful will have plenty of other options, should they choose to avoid public service.

Any citizen that takes recreational drugs that have any mental effects beyond 24 hours lose their right to vote. This would include alcoholics. Regaining this right should be difficult. How can a democracy, even a socialist democracy, survive if it's voting citizens are voluntarily mentally impaired? Alternate way of stating this: You can either have the right to be perpetually stoned, or you can have the right to vote, but not both.

Illegal immigrants were simply an unemployable class of tourists, and legal immigration happened on a more reasonable timescale.

Education at public and state institutions were free to all citizens, in perpetuity, for any that maintain passing grades.

Anyone that votes illegally (votes twice, wrong jurisdiction, etc) or is guilty of rigging an election loses citizenship and is deported. Corporations guilty of such things become property of the state.

The right to privacy were not confused with the false right to be anonymous. Anonymity is only appropriate for voting, and then only partially. Citizens who fail to vote should eventually lose rights, up to and including citizenship. Freeloaders are unwelcome. Participate, at least occasionally, or get out.

  7. Yes, Mark Twain was definitely suggesting that children pick up cats by the tail. Not maliciously, but in the simple process of play: learning, exploration, and growth. Play with cats. If you are nice to them, they purr. If you are not nice to them, they make you bleed.

Likewise, if you really want to understand how to harness the energy in the wind, hoist a sail on a boat, go fly a kite. Simultaneously, if you can. Toss in a skateboard, or in Twain's generation, a wagon or scooter, while flying a kite. Then, when you read about Vasco da Gama, the story will be that much more captivating and real.

It was likely inconceivable to Mark Twain that future children would grow up in a world completely devoid of physical experiences, brought on by the cult simulacra. Mark Twain hung out with interesting people, including Nikola Tesla. His hands were frequently dirty, and not just from the ink of his pen. His writing was meant to augment the life experiences of his readers, not replace it.

Honestly, I'd prefer you chose to live a long, healthy and happy life in a cooperative fashion with the rest of humanity. By cooperative, I mean that you try living in a sustainable way. This doesn't mean giving in to carbon credit trading shysters, or giving up little luxuries and a reasonable standard of living. It might mean trading in a gas guzzler for an electric when affordably available, or perhaps a more efficient vehicle burning carbon neutral (ish) biofuels. Or, installing solar, or buying solar options from your energy company. Or the best option, just bike to work a day or two per week, if possible.

The point is, by simply caring and choosing products and little lifestyle tweaks that support sustainability, you help create a sustainable economy. You don't have to be superman. Just educate yourself and care enough to try what you can afford to try, to be more sustainable than the Baby Boomer and Traditionalist bastards who consumed like there was no tomorrow.

I just visited with a former US Navy pilot who's been flying for Frontier for the last 20 years. He hates it. Even in some major airlines, pilots are often treated poorly, have poor schedules, and are expected to have no life. This leads to a high rate of "AIDS" - Aviation Induced Divorce Syndrome. Pay has been increasing, but quality of life isn't.

If you work for an airline, regional or major, you have to establish 'seniority' before you can gain any sense of a normal schedule or choose a base of operations. Until you've establish seniority, a pilot is at the whim of the company. If you change companies, you give up seniority and start at the bottom all over again.

Federally Regulated Indentured Servitude. What a rewarding career choice. Not.

The real issues are the MBA mentality, and innovation and competition limiting FAA regulations. The airline industry and the FAA have been in bed together for decades to create regulations that go far beyond safety, and in reality limit competition and innovation. Profit and protecting the status quo comes first, everything else comes second. As a result, the US has seen a real decline in the pace of innovation in aviation. Other markets have seen dramatic increases in innovation, service, and safety. Aviation, not so much (except in safety). Yes, we have more efficient engines, better avionics, and more advanced materials (787 Dreamliner, etc.), but these innovations are in increasingly niche markets.

General aviation special interest groups like EAA and AOPA are starting to chip away at the FAA/Airline industry monster: Basic Med is helping hobbyist pilots keep their medicals and continue flying smaller aircraft safely. And, the recent FAA Part 23 regulation re-write is helping revive general aviation engineering and production in the United States. These are drops in the bucket, but hopefully this trend continues.

The Spaniards were surprised at the speed and accuracy that the quipu were used to recall such details.

What exactly did I lie about in my two sentence summary of a lengthy wiki page? You don't like that I summarized the Taiping Christians as more barbaric than the Qing Dynasty? Or you don't like the numbers that I pulled directly from the article?

    From the article I cited:

it also ranks as one of the bloodiest wars in human history, the bloodiest civil war, and the largest conflict of the 19th century, with estimates of the war dead ranging from 20–70 million to as high as 100 million, with millions more displaced.

    Which I summarized as:

As many as 100 million died between 1850 and 1864.

    Where's the lie?

Apparently, other Christians in that day would agree with my brief assessment of the Taiping Christians:

In 1837 Hong Xiuquan, a Hakka from a poor mountain village, once again failed the imperial examination, frustrating his ambition to become a scholar-official in the civil service.[20][21] He returned home, fell sick and was bedridden for several days, during which he experienced mystical visions.[22][23][24] In 1843, after carefully reading a pamphlet he had received years before from a Protestant Christian missionary, Hong declared that he now understood that his vision meant that he was the younger brother of Jesus and that he had been sent to rid China of the "devils", including the corrupt Qing government and Confucian teachings.[25][26] In 1847 Hong went to Guangzhou, where he studied the Bible with Issachar Jacox Roberts, an American Baptist missionary.[27] Roberts refused to baptize him and later stated that Hong's followers were "bent on making their burlesque religious pretensions serve their political purpose."

Dude, look - you justify the human and cultural destruction of indigenous peoples because Manifest Destiny - or whatever bullshit they call it from where you are from.

In another post, you trivialize the near genocide of Native Americans with this:

That's pretty funny. The native american population in North America today is probably about the same [wikipedia.org] today as it was at the time of contact. When you said "a few" you forgot to add the word "million".

Which was in response to my statement:

Fortunately there are still a few Native Americans left alive. They aren't exactly prospering, but at least their story is being told.

My morbid curiosity has driven most of this conversation, and you have confirmed my worse fear of you. You would justify the holocaust and trivialize the savagery against the Jews because

the population of Israel is now almost 9 million, far greater than the 6 million 'allegedly' killed in WWII, and those Jews living today are so much better off.

You said that, but instead of Jews you said it about Native Americans. And you call me a smug ignoramus? Wow. Just wow.

The United States is far from perfect. Despite the US Constitution declaring that all people are equal, we've had our civil war over slavery. And today, while Native Americans have the same freedom of speech that everyone else has, they have been so economically and culturally disadvantaged that they are still effectively 'contained' on reservations. Fortunately, this evil is changing, even if only one person at a time.

It is also fortunate that indigenous people here, along with everyone else, are free to own firearms, and for good reasons that you've made all too clear.
