This is a little different since it's a freely chosen service with competition, not production of a product. The only feasible way to make them not a monopoly would be to make their service worse so people stop choosing to use them.

I'm not sure fan of big brother, but it's illegal to fire guns within most city limits and anyone doing so I doing something that needs police attention. This is one form of surveillance that seems unobtrusive and doesn't violate any form of privacy. That said, if they start listening with better microphones and storing data, that's a whole other ballgame.

Not the salesman kind of call center, a disaster recovery kind of place. Had to call a lot of people back. Ringbacks were the bane of my existence. Right up there with the answering machine / voicemail sermons. People would go into an entire Bible study before the beep to let you record a message. Forced by my job to listen through it so I could leave a message. Arrrrrg.

In college I build a PC case around a window unit that was wired to run non stop. It worked quite well though when the power went out it would get immediate condensation. On the up side, it was great for keeping your drinks cold too. On the down side, I needed a jacket to gsme.

  6. You can let google handle your voicemail for you and then you can manage them like emails in your inbox. I don't like the idea of google sifting through all of my voice communications, but better than me having to sift through them.

At work we buy MacBook Airs for people that need a take-home or checkout laptop. They're all metal and pretty rugged. We have ones with bent edges from being dropped on concrete and they're still working. We've never had one physically broken. They're also a lot less likely to get viruses and spyware. Some of that is just because our users don't know how to use them as well so they aren't downloading BS onto them.
