  1. Re:Not really against this on Will Your Credit Report Disqualify You For a Job? · · Score: 1

I'm torn in this area. I have excellent credit rating and that's because I've worked to keep it clean and up to date. I am diligent about shredding anything that would show people where I've made purchase. I keep my transactions as private as possible, I tend to check my credit scores every year. But most Americans don't tend to be so diligent. But then I married someone who didn't have such great credit. He's learned from me how to fix his spending habits and now maintains some due diligence on his information. Now I'm very lucky that he hasn't been a complete dick to me financially since he asked for a divorce. He could have ruined me if he wanted to which would suck. But there is an example of where I was a person with sound credit and someone else could have ruined it. The same thing happens when someone with good credit finds themselves the victim of stolen checks or identity theft. A credit check against a person only sees the immediate picture. And that picture is 2-dimensional. Yet we live in a 3-dimensional world where millions of things can happen that cause us strife, even those that are diligent.

So for a company to deny you work, is in some cases, just wrong. You need work to earn money to keep up good credit by buying items and paying down debts which is how you get good credit. It's all a messy scam.

I feel that if you're going for a high security job that requires direct access to vast amounts of money and information, that is a little more reasonable to ask for that info to ensure you don't have gambling debts or are ripe for being blackmailed or tempted to embezzle. But other than that, it's no one else's business what your credit report says. It's too easy to judge falsely.

From the day we met we were attracted to one another, but he was showing signes of running from the moment we met. I didn't see that communciation. I wish I had. For he has run away from me, as fast as his selfish legs will take him. He didn't know how to communicate when things didn't fit in his mind. I kept things bottled up, he hid his feelings, and in the end he destroyed them, dropped a feeling bomb and ran.

Marriage is hard work, don't let anyone tell you different, you've receive a lot of good advice from lots of /.'ers, and they have provided some great wisdom. The books you've read also provided you lots to consider. But don't let all of this cloud your life with your spouse. 8. Re:I used to buy music and listen all day on EMI Only Selling CDs To Mega-Chains From Now On · · Score: 1

Well, you certainly make a valid point about where Music sits in the importance of someone life, and I can definitely agree to your scenario, but I can tell you that as life throws a person a curve and they suddenly find themselves out of there normal routine, Music comes crashing through the wall of chaos and can provide some stable grounding. What I mean is that people like nostalgia when life gets tough, and sometimes they will go to any length to find that old song that reminds them of better days.

Independant Music retailers seem to have a great deal of customers from what I've experienced. The selections are vast and the sales persons are fairly knowledgable. I personnally would prefer to own my own CD's and then convert them to digital media as I choose too. While I appreciate the mobility of the digital media, it is so easy to see it lost. One corrupt hard drive and Bam!, years of downloaded (legal) content is gone. But owning the CD's makes it easier to recover the loss.

The scenario that I've seen is that places like Walmart, which I refuse to shop at, feel that they only want wholesome items sold in their stores. This limits music selections down to what a few people feel is appropriate. Independant music stores are non-biased for what they sell, in my opinion.

My issue, is that Music on CD's has become more expensive when it should have come down in price a little. I don't feel music should be free. I believe that artists should get a great slice of the pie for their creations. But a hard-working stiff like me, can only afford so much.

So I believe that the Music industry has really followed a poor model in getting their products out to the masses. Had the industry opened up their business model to a more expansive medium, I don't believe they would be chasing after all the lost revenue, but would have become better equipped for the next form of technology in the future.

So the more narrow the market, the more people will do whatever they can to find what they like, and while you do not see the importance of music during this phase of your life, things will one day come full circle and it will find importance in your existence once again. I just hope you'll have an easier time trying to find your musical memories than where we're headed.

But then again, this is just my opinion, take it for what it is worth. /peace

One product that is rather irksome is the lightbulb. There are those new lightbulbs that are made to emit less heat and last have a much longer lifespan, and consumers are finding that the life span is less than a typical light bulb and now the product (the one I'm thinking of) contains a lot of Mercury in it. I am not a layer, but my guess it that it verges on illegal. Once, my mother took a business course and learned what was legal for a Hiring Manager to ask for on an application. It was very limited information and the reason was to help prevent discrimination.

The idea of EEOC is that people should be hired on their merits and abilities. Now I understand background checks for criminal activity, but at what point will someone be forgiven? If you did the Time for a crime, how long will it be before you can become an active member of society and begin to earn respect back? Isn't that what jail was ment for, to re-integrate people back into society? As for illegal activiy, if you're willing to put it on the web, knowing it's illegal, and you haven't been charged, are you still innocent? Yes. Innocent until proven guilty. It's a tough pill to swallow, but there are circumstances behind everything that people do or have done and will do.

It is a hiring manager's job to find qualified people who work well in their company. Outside of that, they should not go beyond what legal guidelines have been set in place. People mess up, plain and simple, almost everyone has at some point in their existance. Who has the right to judge you for it and for how long?

I'm not saying I'm right in my opinion, and I don't support criminal activity. But if I'm at some goofy party and share that memory with friends and I get drunk and don't do anything illegal, and someone posts stuff about it with my name, I should not be judged for that.

I've skimmed through a good portion of the posts and many people have touched on some great discussion points. But I think that some of those points need to be brought together.

Many posters have said, "Let people choose to work where they are most comfortable."
Many posters have noted, "Girls like people, boys like things." (paraphrasing)
Many think women just aren't intersted.
Some feel women don't have the mental capacity.
Many have stated that women are harrassed.

    You're all right and wrong.

Women do have the mental capacity for higher math and sciences. But we do tend to have that natural tendancy to interact with humanity. But girls are curious about things, but we also don't waste time. If an inventor made a toaster, and it works, we look quickly at how it functions and works to make life easier and we move on. Don't think that our brains are any less interested in the mechanical working, but we look for bigger problems and tackle those. We tend to follow the old addage of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

The medical science area there are always new issues and they build off of existing issues that have already been resolved. One poster stated that women tend to handle repeative task and men constantly seek the next big challenge. In basic human nature that is true, women will handle the repetive need to satisfy the people around them. This is not completely untrue for men, but they look at that social need differently. It's not wrong, it's just different.

I personnally got into CS because I naturally found the ability to manipulate code to my design enticing. But I learned that I was a better thinker than coder. I would over think my code and honestly I wasn't an efficient coder. But I can pseudo code well and define the logic, therefore I help tremendously in the CS field. I natually fell into the analyst role. But I have learned from experience that may male counterparts as well as the female ones who are developers, are fairly anti-social in general. Most coders, in my experience, don't like to work on teams, they don't like to discuss, they don't tend to make their working code re-usable. Most coders tend to work in single person silo's, but this appears only to be what they are working on. Lunch Hours / After hours, they can be social butterflies.

Most Women don't tend to be that way. We tend to collaborate, we share ideas, we tend to try to think through problems before we tackle them. Men may think through things, but not as many tend to open up their ideas for discussion or criticism.

As for the harrassment aspect, it does exist. I have been harrassed, and put in embarrassing situations because some male counterpart didn't give a shit what he said or did around me. While that didn't stop me from getting my degree in CS and following that career path, I can see where some women can be disuaded. But honestly, aren't women more harrassed or leared at in Nursing? How many men or woman have enjoyed the notion of a woman dressed up as a nurse coming to the rescue? Ferris's Beuller's day off..... stereo-typical definition of a bad image place on women, funny as it was.

So it appears to me to be a disinterest in the lack of social team work along with many social stigmatisms that plague our society.

    Food for thought.

What people lose sight of is Home is home, it is NOT work. If a company give you a Blackberry, they are expecting you to be on Call, that is a different job title and demands different pay. People lost sight of that because the Blackberry is also pretty cool, and the holder can make calls out as well as receive them. They can leave the office a little early instead of stay a little later that one day. But companies and managers abuse the holders of these devices. How many times has the Blackberry gone off while you're at home. Have you (or the holder in the house) felt compelled to answer it? Probably, because suddenly the world is "OMG they would call me on the Crackberry if it wasn't important" society. When in reality it could just have easily have been put off until the morning.

If you hold a BrackBerry, I feel your job description should be expanded to define further what is expected of you because you hold one. It is my belief, that if the moment you walk through the threshhold to your home the Blackberry should be turned off for the night and should be stowed. If you feel that much of a need to check your Blackberry, you should have just stayed at work that much later to get your work done and not have brought work into your HOME.
