And speaking of original, have any of you ever seen a little Film called "Fist of Fury"? Or maybe you've seen it as "The Chinese Connection". I agree that fist of legend is perhaps Jet Li's best film, but let's not criticize "the One" for being a rip-off, and then praise a DIRECT RE-MAKE of the best film Bruce Lee ever made and call it the second coming. I In fact like fist of legend better than fist of fury, but that is simply because Lee's version is very dated in many ways. And after all, if there had not been a bruce lee, there would likely not have been a Jet Li or a Jackie Chan.
Perhaps that's because Drunken Master II is Jackie Chan's best Film, and Black Mask is one of Li's worst. I'll Put Fist of Legend up against DMII almost any day, as they are perhaps the 2 best HK Kung Fu movies I've ever seen.

Does nobody else get the message of this film? I hate to break it to you people, but there are no heros in this film. The movie does not have some "deep message" about why young people today are so detached and disaffected. This movie is an exploration of Nihlism and cult behavior. Because "Jack" has a problem with his life, he gets a bunch of weak-willed insipid followers together and basically brainwashes them into acting out his own twisted, selfish, adolescent philosophy. Most of the scenes after Tyler begins handing out "homework assignments" show the systematic use of the organization that Tyler has built to hand-pick the members of the group who are most vulnerable to Tyler's control. These people come to the house and "apply" to be members of project mayhem. Only after you have shown that you are willing to undergo abuse, humiliation, and sleep deprivation for a cause that you thus far know nothing about are you admitted into the inner circle. The first rule of the "inner circle" is that you do not seek to know anything that you are not told. This is the last step in divorcing you from the rest of the world. At this point you have allowed another person to have complete control of your world view. Information control is the first step in creating tyranny. After you have placed control of your life in another person's hands, you are then systematically divested of your individual identity, hence the fact that members of project mayhem have no names. I loved this movie a great deal, so please don't put this down as bashing, but if you people think that Tyler Durden has some great message for the youth of our society, you are sadly mistaken. What this film does capture beautifully is the utter emptiness of nihlism, and the effectiveness of a charasmatic leader who makes proper use of brainwashing tactics. After watching this film, you should have fewer questions about how events like Waco and Jonestown happen, and more fear of charismatic demagogues spouting empty (yet somehow disturbingly attractive) philosophies.

Especially given the sorry state of the various Space Programs of the world today, anything that I can do to aid in the possibility of finding other life in the universe is worth my effort. Hmmm....Let's see...I'm a reasonably well-adjusted individual who has never seriously hurt anyone, am considered bright, intelligent and funny by most of my peers, have a good job and am quite successful by most measures...let's see how I stacked up on these points in HS.
1) Loss of temper on a daily basis: Yep, I was a 15 year old boy with a bunch of hormones welling up in me. I was a geeky smart kid who blew the curve for people in classes. I found something to be pissed off about nearly every day between the ages of 15 and 18.
2) Frequent physical fighting: Yep, I took martial arts when I was in high school, and my friends and I would spar at least 2 or 3 times a week without pads. It may not be the type of fighting you're thinking of, but it IS fighting, and more importantly it sure LOOKS like fighting to someone who doesn't know what's going on.
3) Significant vandalism or property damage: This I did not really participate in, but we did like to go to the dump and break bottles, or take a sledgehammer to junked TV's, machinery, appliances, etc. Still shows a "violent" impulse.
4) Increase in use of drugs or alcohol: Gee, I had an increase in HS from never having touched drugs or alcohol, to drinking occasionally and smoking weed. Does that count?
5)Increased risk-taking behavior: Oh Yeah!!! Teenagers do a lot of stupid stuff. Sometimes they think it will be fun, sometimes they just don't know any better. We used to drive fast and reckless, skate and bike hard. Free climb, jump off of buildings, mock fight with real weapons, etc. All stupid. All risky. All part of being a teenager.
6) Detailed plans to commit acts of violence: We were very into paramilitary groups and martial and military thought. We would often draw up plans for fortresses, discuss small group tactics and hand-to-hand combat, play D&D and other RPGS (another excellent point that someone else pointed out, Many RPG's require intellectual familiarity with weapons, strategic thinking, tactical knowledge, and battle planning), and practice group attack and defense with martial arts.
7) Announcing threats or plans for hurting others: How many teenage boys in the heat of passion have not screamed out "the next time I see you I'm gonna kick your ass!"? Hom many have said, after being picked on, "Just wait til you try that the next time!". It's normal, teenaged blowing off of steam, BUT IT COUNTS!
8) Enjoying hurting animals: Well, I did a lot of fishing when I was in HS, and Boy did I enjoy it! Now I may not have taken sadistic glee in hurting the poor little fish that I caught and ate, but I did hurt (and KILL) them, and eat them. I also thoroughly enjoyed it.
9) Carrying a weapon: There was not one single day that I was between the ages of 14 and 20 that I did go armed everywhere! I always had at least a knife, and often had much more deadly melee or throwing weapons. I never carried a gun, but I shot shotguns with my friend and his dad fairly often.
I have just shown you that I fit this profile EXACTLY!!! when I was in HS. I now have a college degree, work for a major multinational telecommunications and data networking company, and pull down high 5 figures a year. Now think how much worse my life would be if some stupid, vindictive nincompoop had reported me to the authorities and it had resulted in legal/disciplinary problems. Would I have used my knowledge, training, and violent impulses to hurt people in an effort to defend myself? Would I have felt like the world had turned against me a sunk down into a spiral of depression and suicide? Would I have shut up and taken it like a good little boy and had the state and my parents prying into my privacy, running my life, and sending me to useless therapy? Hard to say, but I know it would have made my very hard adolescence that much harder. This is what you propose would be a "good" idea to do to 1000's of innocent kids whose only crime is that they are not shiny happy people who are not interested in socially acceptable, politically correct subjects. They are not cattle to go where the powers that be point them. For this, they are going to be punished.
Also, you cannot convince me that even bright HS students have enough knowledge of their peers (especially those that they are afraid of and refuse to get to know) to accurately assess whether or not they are significant threat.
My impression of this fiasco is that it will ruin a lot of children's lives, and not save a single one. The beauty is that you don't have to save a child for the project to be a success, since there is no possible way to prove whether or not the subjects of these reports would have committed violence. All the state and Pinkerton have to do next year is say "School violence decreased x% last year. Good thing we have this right wing, nazi-esque finking system in place to catch those violent types before they strike". Forget the fact that violence went down 2x% the year before without it. It's all a sick demented scam to make people even more afraid of government, and even more willing to wear the leash. High School is where children begin to learn about being adults. Don't you think we should teach them about taking responsibility and being accountable for their own actions? If these lessons were instilled in more of our citizens, the US would not be in as sorry a shape as it is now.
Not to mention the fact that most of the people implicated in other help/reporting lines are adults. This may seem to be a simple distinction, but what it actually means is that the vast majority of people affected by Pinkerton's other "Help Lines" have a legal recourse to rely upon if they are falsely accused/defamed. OTOH, NONE of the people who would be affected by WAVE have any legal recourse for themselves. The best that they could hope to do is to convince their parents that they have been wrongly evaluated and hope that the parents are willing to go to court if necessary to protect their "Rights" (which is a funny thing to say, because as we all know, children in America have almost no rights). This is the kind of ridiculous, ineffective, and dangerous policy that can ruin a child's life for no reason other than that they are different. For every "Dangerous" child this profile catches, I'm sure it will catch 1000's who have never posed a danger to anyone, and mark them with a stigma that may never wash away. But hey! It's OK to sacrifice 1000's for the good of one person, Right?
I wonder how much money I can make from this before they catch on....All I have to do is get the yearbooks from all my local High Schools and turn in every single student in every single school. How much are they offering again?
This is a seriously horrible idea that will do no good whatsoever, and a lot of very real harm. Aside from the very real possibility that it would be used for profit or petty revenge, it would definitely put a lot of unwarranted stress on people who really need less stress and a caring person to listen to them. But then again, Children have no rights in this country. They are basically the property of their parents, so why should anybody listen to this argument and begin to treat them like people?

I don't think that the point of Kevin's case has ever been whether he was guilty, wrong, or deserved to be punished. The point has always been that Kevin has been persecuted (Yes, I mean that in the literal sense) basically for being an embarrassment to the federal government. Let's look at what has happened to Kevin over the last 5 years. He has been incarcerated in maximum security federal penitentiaries. He has been housed with dangerous criminals who have committed REAL crimes (ie: violent crimes like rape and murder), he has been denied access to the evidence to be presented against him in court, he has been denied a diet that meets his health needs, and he has been denied proper and adequate medical care. He has been accused of causing outrageously inflated amounts of damages to companies that really suffered nothing more than humiliation at how poor their security was. Now he has finally been released after 5 years in prison without bail and without speedy trial and been told that he cannot get a job in the field that he knows best and would be best able to support himself in. Where exactly is the justice in our justice system? People who kill other people while driving drunk or rape other people get lighter sentences than Kevin did. Also, when was the last time you heard of a Wall Street white collar criminal (who probably cheated thousands of people out of millions of dollars) who spent a *single* hour in a maximum security federal prison? The only monetary damages that Kevin was truly guilty of was making free cellular phone calls. Does he deserve to deal with 5 years of humiliation and abuse at the hands of our justice system and to have this humiliation and abuse continued after he has served his time (more time than he deserved IMHO) over the price of some cellular phone calls? No matter how conscientious you are, I know that you have broken some law at some point in your life. How would you like to serve, oh lets say 6 months in a maximum security pen for fornication and jaywalking? Think about it before you come off with the lame "He got what he deserved" crap. I've heard it from too many people.
Perhaps you're the one who needs to stop ignoring people. Katz has said time and time again that only about 25% of the comments that he receives about his articles are negative. And as for not liking being ignored...tough! There are a lot of things in life that you aren't going to like, but you have to learn to deal with them none the less...
Dr. Strange was a failed pilot for a TV series. I saw it when it originally aired in the 70's and then hadn't seen it again until recemtly when they aired it on Sci-Fi (I think). It shows it's age, but it's still the best Marvel TV thing IMHO.
I've been messing with this crap for a week and I'm very close...which makes it all the more annoying.
I've tried 3 different Ethernet cards, my box sees all of them, I can config static IP's for all of them, not a single one of them will activate and retrieve a DHCP address from the cable modem. I'm not done trying yet though:)
Whether a movie sucks or not has almost no impact on whether or not it is successful. I have seen way too many terrible movies (Godzilla anyone?) That were quite successful and even more really great movies (Highlander anyone?) that were total flops. It seems to me that the key to making a successful film these days is to appeal to the broadest cross-section of the american public. This of course means that films cannot be too strange or clever because people will then find them inaccessible. I mean come on, do you really think that a film like 2001: A Space Odyssey would get made today?

well...I know myself (some days at least). But then again, I didn't become an MCSE by going to class. I became one by knocking around NT boxes, breaking them, and fixing them. After I knew my way around, I went out and got some books to study so that I could answer the stupid exam questions that Microsoft thinks are important. NT may not be the best OS in the world, but it pays my bills an allows me to have my computers to run linux on at home:)
Necessity is a big motivating factor for me as well. Some of us don't have $3500 to plunk down all at once for a brand new machine. We also don't want to pay hundreds of dollars a month to lease a machine we'll never own. If it were only a question of $200 I wouldn't bother building my own machines either, but I just priced an AMD Athlon 600Mhz with all of the same hardware specs (perhaps not the same brands except the video and Network card) as the $3499 Powermac G4 over at pricewatch, and even adding about 10% on top for shipping, it still comes out to about $2200! I think $1300 is worth building my own machine for. Is it quite as fast as the G4? No, can I buy a really nice 21" Nokia monitor with USB support for $850 and still come in about $450 cheaper than the G4? Yes. I can also put Linux on it for free and not have to worry about whether or not it will work. I can then go out tomorrow and buy any new expansion card from any manufacturer and be relatively sure that will work too.
You're right, apple won't make any money off of me, which is why they don't market to me, and why I won't buy from them...
Thanks for the info, but a lot of this stuff is still above where it should be price point wise. Add to that the initial overpricing of Macs (IMO), and the small size of the cases (until recent years) and I'm still not very attracted to the Macs...I do stand corrected on the fact that there is more than one manufacturer for Mac upgrades though:)
You still haven't told me where I can buy a G3/G4 motherboard and processor separately and use them in any case I choose.
Plus, when was the last time you were able to buy a brand new Motherboard and processor and rip the old stuff out of your existing case and reuse all of your peripherals for less than $180? How many new macs have you paid $1500 to $4500 dollars for outright in the last 10 years? I prefer to get by spending $100 to $200 dollars every couple of months to get exactly what I want every time, and see a noticeable improvement in performance every time. What I really object to is the initial large outlay of cash you have to make to buy the Mac in the first place. Why can't they get it through their heads that *I* want to build my *own machine* from the very beginning? Obviously the reason is that Apple could care less about the hardware geek market. They know that their money is in selling to people who have never taken the case off of a computer and will be happy to never have to do so. Give me some variety and the ability to build my own machine one piece at a time and I'd be happy to use PPC hardware. The problem is that they know if they do that I'm not gonna buy anything from Apple. I'll buy all my parts from third parties and run Linux instead of MacOS. Oh well...I guess I'm always gonna be a PC user:)
And how many manufacturers can you go to to get these upgrade boards and processors?
One?
Apple needs to open up a little competition in their hardware market. They were on the right track until bought out power computing and screwed UMAX IMHO.
Show me where I can buy a G3 or G4 processor and a separate motherboard that will fit in any standard ATX case I choose. Allow me to buy all of the parts to build a G4 Mac separately that will still work with MacOS no matter what hardware I decide to put in it. I'll stay in the PC world until you can thank you very much. Some of us still like to upgrade a piece at a time and get our hands dirty trying to make screwy things work.

Let's see...that would mean that 75% of them are positive (or at least neutral). Hmmm...I guess that would make YOU a part of the minority that is trying to get Jon to quit writing for slashdot. Here's a news flash...the minority is not allowed to force it's views on the majority. And for your info, the majority is not forcing its views on you either...all you need to do if you don't like Katz is to set your slashdot profile not to show you anything by him...or if you're too much of an AC, just ignore any articles that have hgis name on them...
I'll give it a shot...
:)
I've been messing with this crap for a week and I'm very close...which makes it all the more annoying.
I've tried 3 different Ethernet cards, my box sees all of them, I can config static IP's for all of them, not a single one of them will activate and retrieve a DHCP address from the cable modem. I'm not done trying yet though
that works? Having a cable modem is nice, having to run it in windows is not!
My favorite story from burning chrome has to be "Dogfight". Although "Burning Chrome" is a close second.
well...I know myself (some days at least). But then again, I didn't become an MCSE by going to class. I became one by knocking around NT boxes, breaking them, and fixing them. After I knew my way around, I went out and got some books to study so that I could answer the stupid exam questions that Microsoft thinks are important. NT may not be the best OS in the world, but it pays my bills an allows me to have my computers to run linux on at home :)
Add to that the initial overpricing of Macs (IMO), and the small size of the cases (until recent years) and I'm still not very attracted to the Macs...I do stand corrected on the fact that there is more than one manufacturer for Mac upgrades though :)
You still haven't told me where I can buy a G3/G4 motherboard and processor separately and use them in any case I choose.
:)
Oh well...I guess I'm always gonna be a PC user
I'd be interested to see some links...
