'Viva la revolucion komandante!' Your words, not mine.
'True, but then you wouldn't be able to eat if you happened to be an artist, musician or software developer.'
Funny, because there are plenty of people who give their software away for free, but can afford to eat. After all if their were no copyright things would be a lot cheaper.
I choose GPL because I don't believe in copyright, if everyone used the GPL then there would be no copyright, and an electronic copy wouldn't have any value in it's self.
I choose independent music because the money goes to the bands, to pay their rent and get them pissed at the week ends, the money does not go to some anonymous company, to buy their directors champagne and caviar and make stock holders rich, years after their employees have died.
If their were no copyright or ownership laws we would not need the GPL.
I have to put up with advertising every day, this uses up many of my resources (like my TV, Internet bandwidth, or just by distraction).
What is the difference between, spamming, Yahoo sticking a an on the end of an Email, junk mail (rubbish) coming through my front door, and banner adds on./? There are all annoying, partly destructive, and I have to go way out of my way to avoid them.
You can't argue that spam is bad without also arguing that all other types of near forces advertising are equally as bad, and then say that this isn't a censorship issue.
Anyhow, keep at least 2 email accounts, a hotmail one so Microsoft gets all the spam, and a private one that friends only get. I've never had spam sent to my private email address.
"The animals stare anxiously in the air, and instead of attacking the mouse, the cat leaves it alone or will even stand in fear before the mouse. One could also conclude that the behavior of dogs that are under the influence of LSD involves hallucinations. A caged community of chimpanzees reacts very sensitively if a member of the tribe has received LSD. Even though no changes appear in this single animal, the whole cage gets in an uproar because the LSD chimpanzee no longer observes the laws of its finely coordinated hierarchic tribal order. "
I would assume that if you have a full tool chain on you PC, and found an artical on./ that you would know how to google for wine. Failing that wait until everything is upto scratch and in the Wine tree at which point it will be bundled pre-compiled with you faviorate distro, Mandrake may even be tempted to do another Gaming adition. You then either have the option of, using the payed for support that comes with you distro to help you with any problems. (You can get this option with Windows, but it's a lot more expensive), finding someone to support you, or flicking through your local paper and finding a computer 'expert' to pop round and give you a hand. or you could always sponsor some work to resolve the problems you are having.
If your having problems today you can always send me an email, I may take a couple of days to get back to you, as I have limited resources, but you will get a reply.
I should imagine that this is more than you would ever expect or get from any other product you have ever purchased in your life, and certainly more than you would get from Windows.
FWIW, I've also been working on migrating Windows setting over to Linux so that knopix will pick-up all the hardware, network and user information from and windows install present on the machine. I've also done some work on intergrating Windows meta-information with KDE. So yes the end game is you can walk into any shop, pick up any piece of software from the shelf, stick the CD in and have it install on you Linux box, without some major sponsorship it's a few years down the line, but getting a lot closer than it was a few years ago.
...Except many games and applications don't use shaders or stencil buffers.
Vertex shaders are an important part of the rendering pipeline but stencil buffers and pixel shaders aren't, most applications don't require shaders at all this includes recent games like Half-life 2 and Pirates.
We are looking for a software development manager with 5+ years experience, expecting to earn around £60,000.
All you have to do is send me your CV with details of where you went to school, what grades you left with, your date of birth, all your work history and your address and phone number.
Knowing you have a job and earn about £60k I will arrive at your house in a few days time, go through you rubbish to get bank account details.
I will then use the information you sent me to steal you identity, the amount your earning I doubt you'll even notice.
gcc 4.0 should perform vectorisation of code so more loops will be compiled to use MMX/SIMD/3DNOW etc...
That should give you a 10%-100% boost in CPU/memory intensive applications, especially sound or graphics where there are a lot of x.1.n = f(x.0.n ) type functions.
I've been doing a bit of work in that area, I think of it as the computer human interface. Basically the computer uses the human as an extra processor instead of a dump commander. You can extend the same kind of ideas to computer - computer communications to build intelligent networks. In the intelligent networks the computers ask each other questions and try to infer the state of the system.
"Wouldn't it be nice if the computer was never wrong and always presented you with exactly what you wanted? Well this is my aim with intelligent UIs, UIs that adapt to your way of working instead of you adapting to them. To do this I'm planning on using heuristic analysis and possibly evolutionary algorithms based upon models developed from usability studies. Sounds complex? well it's not really, all the computer attempts to do is minimise the amount of effort you have to do to complete a task.
Eventually I would like to extend the ideas beyond user interfaces to intelligent computer systems, systems that adapt to their environment, to the point where the environment could be someone asking the computer, what shall we do tomorrow?"
"Many portable music players can do more than just play music. Some players have a built-in voice recorder, FM recorder, or stopwatch. And some come with extra accessories like high-quality headphones, a belt clip, or an armband. Because most of these features are included at no additional cost, make sure the device you choose is filled with these fun extras."
That's free as in sky giving me a 'free' satellite dish so long as I pay then £100 for the next ten years.
They don't even make many watches with stop-watch timers and calculators built in any more, so why would anyone want an mp3 player with one.
"3. You'll want a display.
When you have hundreds of songs on your player, you really need an easy way to select your music by artist, album, or genre. This is critical if you want to find that one song or artist you really want to hear. A display also comes in handy when you're looking for your favorite radio station."
I'm sorry, but do they make MP3 players that play songs you don't want to hear?
"Having an FM radio lets you put your player on autopilot as you mountain bike, cycle, or rollerblade. "
So does random and statistics based playlists. What's more, it will only play the songs you want to hear, and without advertising or payola.
"6. Don't get locked into one online store." Well there's an easy answer to that one...
I don't know what world you living in but two things don't have to be exactly the same to be comparable.
I was saying Out of the box setups are seldom the best, and gave numerous examples.
The page file is no different, 1: if you have an app go AWOL windows will end up giving you a huge pagefile scattered all over the disk, and keep telling you 'you are running out of virtual memory'
2: I would always recommend people to allocate a fixed page file size, and try to put it on the fastest portion of the HDD if possible.
3: My windows page file size is zero, I prefer to run out of memory and close down some apps than have my hdd kick in for paging and have the system grind to a halt while I close some applications to free up more memory.
4: It would be even better still if firefox dropped the layout from tabs that I haven't looked at for a good 12 hours.

The ball and chain is the ball and chain of paying next months rent, and buying food.
Just because you can not see it doesn't mean it isn't there.

especially when it's often holes in Windows that are exploited so send out the spam.
'I, personally, would rather my kids see a softcore porno than a violent game like GTA.'
Never been hunting have you? GTA is less violent than fishing or a can of fly spray.
Why not do both? GTA's much more fun on acid.
I just give my kids Acid.

Well, the government would be out of a job if it didn't keep making new laws all the time.
And we wouldn't want a Government that didn't interfere any more would we.

goto wine, if you still having problems I'm sure you can find someone who will fix them for a few dollars.
What do you do when you have problems with you car? or anything else for that matter.
I use mplayer you insensitive clod.
Or emacs using lisp

$2499 for 24/7 phone support, they'd have to be hosting the call centre in India to make Microsoft's margins.

Would you accept the word of a locksmith ... how easy it is for him to pick your current locks?
Not when I can show him how easy it is to put a brick through my window, or mug me for my keys.
I downloaded Avalon just the other day, I haven't installed it yet but as soon as I do I'm going to try and get it working under WINE.
You probably better saving that $50 and upgrading your pc.
Anyhow... fro $41 you can get
168 pin 512MB PC133 (133MHz) SDRAM Memory MODULE For Desktops
Or if you want more than that..'

That only works when the MP3 player support fasttrack and wifi.

well if you don't ask too many questions about where it came from, you can often pickup too good to be ligit deals at ebay.
