I was an atheist raised in a religious household in a religious town. I was called all sorts of names and threated with all sorts of ridiculous claims. So go fuck yourself with your gun.
Religions preach an 'afterlife' and a 'god' that nobody can see...why aren't they subject to truth in advertising laws? They don't say "We think" or "we believe our god is the one true god", they say "Our god is the one true god".
Not as a literal tax, but consider the 'gay marriage' issue. Gay couples pay more for health insurance than straight married couples because their unions aren't recognized.
The only arguments against gay marriage are religious in nature, and yet here we are with an inequity that costs the 'sinner' more.
You must look at these posts from that point of view. American Christers, so unlike their Jesus, think that the nation needs to be protected from booze via governmental control.
Are you seriously saying you don't understand the term 'sin tax' in it's historic and literal contexts?
Not saying it's right, I think religion is 100% shit and the people who sell it should be imprisoned for false advertisement.
It's still illegal to make liqour in the USA, although you can make limited quantities of beer and wine for your family.
I wonder if those laws would be abused to prevent people from distilling their own fuels. The energy company lobbyists must hate that idea! It would not surprise me to learn that this home ethanol plant is illegal for the sole reason that people might *gasp* make their own liquor with it some how.
If there is any inefficiency in the music industry it is due to artists not seeing a reasonable percentage of the wealth generated by their work. Too much of it is sucked up by the machine, and only a few survive long enough to become independently wealthy.
..."Hey Mr. CEO, your idea of outsourcing manfacturing jobs to create lower prices is working great, outsource some more jobs please! I don't care about the future, I wanna save a buck on my plastic mop bucket NOW!"
My GGP post was a joke, I guess I needed more hyperbole...
Americans who deserve to work 40-50 hour weeks, own their own car house and TV and as many kids as they want subsidized by taxpayers? If you take away cheap Chinese goods in the name of 'security', these Americans might have to give up their house or a car or have less children. Besides, the only security we need to worry about is security from Arab terrorists who hate our freedom, don't worry about economic imbalances and lost opportunity in the job market. You're just being negative and bringing America down!
You support him and his illegal occupation of another country.
I see by your anti-arab link that you must be one of those people who had their country handed back to them after they failed to hold it. If only the Native Americans could have been so lucky...
So Americans are truly racist scum because they allowed legal slavery to last so long?
According to you, Americans really are bigotted white trash because they have allowed their laws to treat many groups as second class citizens over the years?
Not sure where you're going with this angry-man, but I suspect your anger results from your inability to claim as big a piece of the pie as your momma promised you.
I'm in a Computer Science Masters program...I find that I get along just fine with wordprocessors that allow a mimium of formulaic presentation. The most complicated formulas I've ever done were in algorithm and cryptography classes and MS Oriface did just fine. The text books were full of diagrams anyway...just type in a reference.
TFA is referring to lawyers...how often do lawyers draw diagrams and complex formulas anyway?
If my boss tells me to do something a certain way, despite my explanations, I can do it or be fired. There are always other programmers waiting to take my place and toe the line.
Politicians almost seem to have a union mentality. They look out for their class first, then do their job second. You fire one politician, your only choice for replacement are generally more people with the same attitudes.
Maybe we need MORE politicians, so some can be out of work, and hungry for employment, and will actually obey their bosses (We the people.)
What will multiple parties do? It just means that whichever candidate wins the election will be less likely to match my views, or any other single person's views.
What we need is for the federal government to back off and give back some of the power that they've taken from the states. That way, we can move to the state which fits us best politically, and everyone's happy. It would work only if federal taxes were flat (for lack of a better term). No more should New York, Connecticut, California, Michigan and New Jersey have their monies redistributed to New Mexico, Arizona, Louisiana, Missouri, etc... This is important, as I for one don't like giving welfare to people who say welfare is bad (as an example)
It's a tough choice. The Fed makes the nation act as one, giving us much power and leverage. Reducing Fed power might result in non-productive squabbling amongst the states.
More parties would make it harder for Federal power grabs like PATRIOT and Warantless Wiretapping to occur.
We need more parties. This huge nation is too diverse to fit into A or B, we need like 20 different parties! Unfortunately, there is little incentive to do this because the politicians who can make the change benefit way too much from the status quo.
I wonder if anyone has a viable stratergy for getting more parties into the mix.
I feel a strong affiliation to the beer and cartoon party.
We can't seem to cut spending...indeed 6 years of Republican Legislature and a Republican President increased spending to record heights.
Now this optional war on borrowed money is weighing on our economy. Time to start paying down our debts, and maybe world confidence in out economy will grow.
Who knows, I just know I hate that our nation is so deeply in debt to some nations with scumbag human rights laws.
Fine them a few hundred bucks per machine. Lazy people who can't or won't keep their machines secure don't deserve to be given access to the internet.
It's like owning a dog. If you don't keep the dog secure, and it runs about able to harm others, you get a fine and potentially lose your right to own a dog.
I realize the logistics are tough, but something needs to be done.
Your argument makes sense, but if the majority want these programs, your only option is to move.
By nature of your living in a nation, you are expected to confirm to the rules of that nation.
If you don't like being on the hook to help out those less fortunate, you could always move to a country that requires up-front payment for emergency services.
I'm just a level higher than you. To me all religions are bunk, so who cares if Scientology uses slightly more odious tactics in it's attempt (along side Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism and all the rest) to sell it's made-up hocus-pocus bullshit as the absolute truth.
I mean really...you're stuck in the recent century. Have Scientologists ever tortured and murdered nobelievers? Nope! So some lies on YouTube, that any rational and intelligent person could see through, are a non-issue.
You say the Scientologists are lying by twisting words. I say all religions are lying when they sell their made-up crap as 'the truth'.
Christian organizations don't have to abuse the courts, their lies are supported by the justice system. Try suing a church for lying about eternal life and miracles and the other absurd claims they make. Many local churches use social pressure, especially in small towns, to force people to comply or at least not to speak out against the bullshit.
I'm an atheist, by the way, so I'm sure you're hate me even more!;)
Religious groups are well known for twisting the words of non-members to support the wacky claims. Some nut-case Christer fundies produced a movie that twisted the words of several well known Atheists.
What do you expect from groups that require that members first suspend disbelief and accept claims of 'eternal life'?

Do you reject the right to choose a religion and to not not have rights and freedoms restricted due to that choice?
If being gay is a choice, why is that choice not protected?
Not as a literal tax, but consider the 'gay marriage' issue. Gay couples pay more for health insurance than straight married couples because their unions aren't recognized.
The only arguments against gay marriage are religious in nature, and yet here we are with an inequity that costs the 'sinner' more.
Or perhaps we need a new word altogether.
Why not! Yeah I know you probably need acres and acres of the stuff.

Americans and their government refuse to admit that they did wrong by invading Iraq and setting up Gitmo.
*shrug*

Your ignorance is showing...
That giant ring of fire is on it's way, just like TV predicted!
Throughout the ages there have been many laws that have made 'legal' ideas and concepts we now find despicable.
Those who wish to control you like to conflate 'criminal' with 'wrong','immoral','evil', etc...
This assumes that the law is never wrong, when in fact, the law is often wrong.
It's a common misconception, especially in the USA.

Just a thought...
I can understand banning net access, that is often a temptation during a lecture.
Am I supposed to go back to WRITING my notes? This is 2008 for fuck's sake.
