When the letter 'x' starts a word it is pronounced similar to the letter 'z'. When the letter 'e' ends a word it is silent and makes the precedeing vowel long, so it would be 'zine' ryhming with 'sign' and 'line'.

One of the examples was Gaim. Of course the creators say that Gaim stands for nothing to avoid lawsuits from AOL, but it stands for G(tk/nome/nu) AOL Instant Messenger.

The worst about Windows is the Publisher name is listed first sometimes. There is no rhyme or reason to the layout of the Windows' Start menu, and once the user starts adding his own programs it becomes a ridiculous mess.

In Linux with a smart Distro, things get organized in the Menu in a logical fashion. Start>System>Archiving>CD Burning>K3B for example. You may not agree with the exact placement but it is logical and some one can sit down and find an appropriate program very easily.

I refute you. I bought a Dell Inspiron 8600 this summer. It has a Pentium M 1.6 with a Geforce FX5200. I installed Linux on it and use it for Lan parties amongst other things. For those things that don't have native Linux installs, I use Transgaming. I installed Mandriva 2005 without a hitch. The hardest part was setting up the partitioning, and only because I dithered over how much to allocate to /home. I could have let it auto partition, but I like have some seperate partitions.

After the install, I did a few customizations including installing a copy of Mplayer that can play DVDs and the CPUFreq utility so I can underclock the CPU and greatly extend the battery life. I am quite happy with it especially for the price I paid off of ebay.

  8. Re:Moral Victory on The Register Takes Aim at Wikipedia Again · · Score: 1

The Register article was not a troll. I have a proposal taht would mostly fix the problem.

One: recognize experts. This should be common sense but wikipedia is composed of a bunch of anti-elitist prigs that fail to understand that a Doctorate of classical Greek Lit. will know more about the Illiad than the prigs do.

Two: Have real editors that have authority. About the only way to do this is to lock down various articles and have editors approve any changes.

Three: Real accountability. Require real email and block anonymous ones such as Hotmail and Yahoo. Capture IP address, and ban abusers. Serious abusers get complaints to thier ISP. Very serious abusers get dealt with in appropriate civil and criminal courts.

Of course there would be warnings for minor things like posting some flamebait. Repeatedly doing so or posting outright false facts might be a ban and a complaint to the ISP. Libel would be a ban and a complaint with the ISP and possible civil court. Death threats would involve criminal investigation.

These ideas are not new and others have made them before. I don't expect them to be implemented now either. Wikipedia is an experiment in absolute democracy, but like most thought experiments on absolute democracy, it is devolving into mob rule.

Wikipedia is good for replacing Everything2, but is no more reliable.
