I say socialize the monopolies. Turn them into government owned buisenesses like the USPS. The USPS is remarkably reliable. To give a recent anecdote: I ordered a hard drive from an internet buisness on the evening of Nov. 22. It was sent FedEx ground and I have yet to receive it. The tracking no shows it was picked up by FedEx on Monday. I ordered an external hard drive enclosure on Sunday and it was sent via USPS. I received the enclosure yesterday. Over the course of my life I have come to expect consitent good service from the USPS. I do not have near as high of expectations from UPS or FedEx, because they consitently disappoint.
If the telephone and cable companies were government owned, I would expect similiar levels of high service as to the USPS.
As an aside, buried on FedEx's website there is a notice as of October that they will no longer require signatures for any home deliveries. I would advise everyone to plan your holiday shipping accordingly.
1) Pick a distro with decent package management. This could be Debian, or Fedora/RedHat, Mandriva, or possibly even Gentoo or Slackware. Apt, YUM, URPMI, Apt-RPM, and others all work well and can be scripted to run from a cron job.
2) Create a base Desktop image. Your typical distro will have all but the most esoteric device drivers already compiled. Setup the distro to use NIS or LDAP for sign on and the/home directory to mount as network storage. Either NFS or SAMBA can be used. Highly recommend every desktop run an ssh server for remote admin. A decent DHCP policy will let you pinpoint a solitary desktop. Use one of many imaging tools once you have the desktop setup.
3) Setup a FTP server to be a local package update repository. Write a cron script so that the Package Management will update from the local repository. The cron script can be randomized so not every desktop will hit the FTP server at the same time. The repository will have only those updates you purposefully put there. (Meaning you have properly tested the updates first).
You could also set up to have the computer mount a/usr/local from a network mount for user specific application from a central server.
Wrongo, please play again. BB writing on the box that BB will honor the manufacturer warranty is a contract. BB offers potential contract and customer accepts when they purchase product. Most any small claims judge would find for the customer. The customer would need to document that they went reasonable lengths to let BB resolve the situation. The customer would also need to show that store credit would not be enought to purchase a comparable monitor. That last is the kicker and I would think that a comparable monitor could be had, though problably slightly worse specs.
Vonage sure seemed to be providing full disclosure as of August which was the first time I checked them out. I saw the issues about 911 were clearly layed out and I would have gone with it if I could have gotten a local number.
I feel people should know a certain minimum about thier products. One should be able to check the fluid levels in thier car and add more fluid as needed (whether it is oil, brake, washer, or some other fluid.) On should be able to change a tire (barring certain physical impediments).
One should know enough to partition and install. One should know enough move files about. On does not need to be able to write shell scripts.
The answer is yes they should be dissolved. Nothing should be stopped in the way of justice. And, yes, I am one of those people who would be directly affected (read Stakeholder) if Sony went out of business.
PDF let anyone see something as it is meant to be printed. On other platforms that do not use Adobe's Acrobat Reader, the pdf viewers are pretty lean.
For the niche that PDF fills, nothing else works as well. Postscript (which PDF is just a variant) is even larger, and other options such as DVI are not well supported.
It is called year end sales at department stores. You can get nicer stuff at major department stores, cheaper than discount outlets like Costco or TJ Maxx.
There are some hybrid sapiens/neanderthalensis fossils that have been found. Besides, if all the pairings were Male Neanderthal and Female Sapiens, then there would be no mitochondrial DNA evidence. I know some of the cross cat species hybrids only work if the male is of species A and the female is of species B. Male B and Female A will not concieve naturally. Apparently there are behavorial and biochemical problems.
How this could work: Neanderthals have no chin and are more robust. It would be a fair supposition that Neanderthals have similiar facial hair growth to Sapiens. A beard would hide a lack of chin so female Sapiens would be attracted to male muscualr Neaderthals, yet female, chinless, muscular Neanderthals would be ugly to male Sapiens.
Heck, maybe that is what happened to Neanderthals, we killed them off when they stole our women.:)

Definately anything in the Homo genus and maybe anything in the Family Hominindae. There is debate about whether Neanderthals are classified as Homo neanderthalensis or Homo sapiens neanderthalensis. Regardless, there is evidence that Cro-magnon man, Homo sapiens sapiens, and Neanderthals interbred. This puts them at least as close as Horses and Donkeys or Lions and Tigers.
It in part depends on whether you believe in absolute moral values or relative moral values. Relative moral values means that the Nazis did nothing wrong. (Yeah, I used a Nazi analogy, but I was too lazy to come with a long description that would come to the same thing.)
See the problems with relative morals? Inalienable rights are in part a means of expressing absolute morals. Inalienable rights are also a means of expressing the foudations for a working society.
Wrong. If OpenDocument/OOo benefits in no other fashion, then thier mere existence and adoption puts competitive pressure on MS to create better software and offer thier software for lower cost. Unless of course you have large stock options in MS, then there is purposeful bias for us to ignore your rants.
Way back when it was WineX, I compared Quake3 in winex to Windows to native Linux and saw little diference. Native Linux was a little faster but only a couple of frames and this was on a Radeon 7500.
I currently use it to play Warcraft3 andsome other games and it works fine.
You must not live on the crappy FL power grid. We regularly get spikes and brownouts. I go through new UPS every 16 months.

What do you mean you are a european? You are an EUian, damn dumbass. You make me ashamed to be Dutch.
I am an American. If you wish to be more politically correct, I am a United States Citizen.

All people have some introvert and extrovert qualities. It is a matter of degrees. Go google for a Myers-Briggs test and check it out.

Have you ever used a foreign Language version of Windows? The core is still in English.

I was a bit surprised to not see Necroscope by Brian Lumley on the list. Harry's only powers are talking with the dead and understanding Mobius Math.
I would argue that Asimov writes at a higher reading level, yet is a better author (as in writes better prose) than the majority of authors.

Wrong. The US Supreme Court has ruled that flag burning is protected political free speech.

Quite possibly Sony engineers refused so Sony Music bought it from the third party.

That is not blackmail, but coercion.
Well, as a concerned citizen, I want teachers teaching morals amongst other things. Most kids sure are not getting it at home.
