Gimme a break. Luke was talking about what he was talking about with George when they were making Star Wars (long time ago, in a galaxy of good movie making... sorry). Anyway... felt the fact of how old the conversation with George was should be more obvious in the slashdot original post.

OK, so M$ has designed a bad OS. But nobody that I know who has Windows XP and knows how to use it ever got infected with a virus.
    Simple rules:

    1. firewall software (eg. Norton) before connecting
    2. You don't use Outlook/Outlook Express and preferably not MSN
    3. Preferably don't use IE
    4. windowsupdates
    5. update your norton firewall/antivirus

Don't get me wrong I'm a OS X, and Debian user, but come one, all I can say is if it wasn't for all the dumb people out there who don't get what I call the essentials I would be unemployed.

Oh crap, I just spilled the beans.

Doing some research on Neil Layton, some interesting information that I came across:

Apparently he wants to use a "Creative Commons" license http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/1.0/ where you can copy, distrobute, and perform, but not use his works for commercial purposes. Though I don't see anything immedialtly on this subject at the website http://www.fadingwaysmusic.com

This guy seems really forward thinking for an artist, nice to see!

And in contrast to what indiepool (Canadian puretracks' indie thing) does, we do not charge anything to get onto the site, and encoding. We take a share of the sales.

That is a bit of a conspiracy theory. It is just the PC Call Home software such as http://www.absolute.com or any of the others.

My only suggestion for laptop owners is to get the most difficult to remove laptop security software. There is none that is impossible to remove, but stuff that resides in the MBR, etc will make life much more difficult for the thief...

  15. treatment of batteries on "iPod's Dirty Secret" · · Score: 1

i have the lovely job of dealing with the general public and repairing their computers at a large ugly retail store. Anyway to get to the point: one of the major problems with laptops is the batteries. People often come in within a year complaining their batteries hold little charge. Most manufacturers carry little or no warranty on the battery.

But I'v have become a little cynical of the customers, I don't think most of them treat their batteries properly. First charge is very important, as well as the first couple of times draining it completely. After that drain the battery once in a while. Never do partial charges.

I'm sure those rules apply to the batteries in most electrical devices, meaning those rules apply to iPods as well (I know some for some batteries sales people like to say there is no memory, but bah, don't trust them!)...

  17. Re:quickly, my ass on Apple Patches Sendmail Bug Quickly · · Score: 1

Sure it is quick for me to update, once the patch was made available, but the point is, when I saw the posting on Slashdot, I went to software updates, and there was no update there.

If I ran an ISP, I would rather the patch be made immediately available, why did Apple not have their patch released as others did when the annoucement was made? Can you imagine me saying to my customers, I'm sorry I choose Apple not Redhat, you can not send e-mail for the next while (undetermined amount of time) while I keep the mail server offline waiting for a patch. . .

Now obviously I could manually put in a patch from Sendmail, but hey I picked OS X because of its ease of use . . .

Oh, and then I would have to explain why the late coming of the ssl patch too . . .

  18. non-american voice on Sendmail Bug Tests US Dept Homeland Security · · Score: 2, Interesting

That's great, do I really want a piece of software which has it's security releases based on what is "co-ordinated" by the American government. Hello!?! Global community here. If companies like RedHat, yada yada want me to use their software I'd much rather an impartial international organization (RE: UN) to handle it.

Futhermore, if I ever felt that the country I belong to were to ever be on opposite sides with the great USA, I might never buy the software for fear of having my support cut off, or, worse, I can definitely imagine; "hey we won't release this information until we take down all our enemies networks!"

So regardless of whether or not I belong to a country which is an enemy of the states, I can see that security releases would be delayed for the benefit of America, putting my network, and possibility government at more risk (assuming your government does not share this information with mine).

So to the bit bucket Sendmail goes! Goodbye, and good riddance to your buggy American agenda software! (Luckily it isn't software I paid for.)

  19. quickly, my ass on Apple Patches Sendmail Bug Quickly · · Score: 0, Troll

Redhat was much faster. Look at the post on the original slashdot article, Redhat had allready a patch available.

Which brings me to another point, Quick is a relative term, but I definitely would not use it in relation to RedHat (I would in relation to M$ patches), but comeon, use some journalistic principles here, and not blindly support OSX, I realize this is apple.slashdot.org, but we should push Apple to do better.

Good thing apple doesn't set sendmail to be active by default!

Here's a question though; without running sendmail, how do you find out what version you have (there is no -v switch for version (-v is verbose))?

  22. security concern on Configuring Sendmail On Jaguar · · Score: 4, Insightful

perhaps suggesting home users (dsl, cable, and dial up users) to use their own MTA is poor as far as security goes. I can see perhaps if you are having a lot of problems with your ISP's outoing mail, but I'd think the security concern would outway the normal service level.

    and the duck thing.

But these things seem conceited human notions that their consicious is special, and the classic early philosopher's saying we are better than animals because we are consicious or have souls. I realize you guys didn't say this outright, but Cyc, what is the difference of how he came across the question/notion than you necessarily did? And how can you be sure you are not just a more complex version of Cyc?

You have said why Cyc is poor, but you have not said how Cyc differs from us (other than a lack of complexity), but then for you to actually say . . . you would be saying something which would end philosophical debate.

And so asking what Cyc is, and Cyc knowing what it is, is perhaps unfair.

This article does what I hoped it would do, spark a little metaphysical debate.

A very important question to ask Cyc is, "Do you have your own distinct personality?"

Further more it is not just a database, it understands the difference between, and the logic inherent in facts.
