will this effect Jabber's overall share of the IM market?
Only as much as anything on Mac has a share on any market. What's Apple's market share of the desktop now ? Other than digital music, have they made more than a ripple in a pond ?
Yea, like that USB thing, Firewire, ditching the floppy, colorful computers, photo management software, digital music players, WiFi, bluetooth, video editing, dvd burning. Apple made the first jump on all of those and look where it got them! Nothing! Ha! Nobody will ever try to follow Apple's lead! Bunch of losers!
That's not true at all. I've installed Debian for many types of organizations. Manufacturing, ISP's, churches, and services companies. Right now I work for an Internet Services company and we use Debian anywhere we use Linux because of its extremely low maintainance requirement.
Make it so it can be used from the command prompt. Make it so it can be used from GNOME. Make it so it can be used by other non-de X apps. Make it so it can be used by Apache, or Samba, or anything else running under UNIX.
Even better, make it compatible with Spotlight. The search API's are diagrammed at a low enough level that it might be a part of Darwin and not Aqua and thereby released as Free Software. But if it isn't, Apple is pushing Spotlight very hard and they want developers to get behind it and use it, so the specification should be pretty open and reproducable.
Your post is somewhat humorous, yes, I'll give you that. But I'd just like to take this opportunity to contrast this with Gray Davis' democratic $95million bribe to Oracle. That's enough for every California government employee to have their own licensed copy of Oracle, including janitors, street sweepers, every teacher, etc.
I sort of get the feeling that Microsoft is releasing source code to some so that they could eventually attempt to do what SCO is doing. UNIX may have no trade secrets left, but Windows certainly does.
I haven't owned a computer with a floppy drive for over 5 years, and I use PC's. No, I take that back, my last laptop had a floppy/battery bay that I always had the battery in.
It's true that I could very easily create my own el torito cd with their floppy images, most of my friends can't. OBSD could get a lot more users with very little effort.
Ok, I love Aqua. My main gripe about Firefox is that it uses GTK widgets and not native Cocoa widgets.
I've given both Camino and Safari their due attention and a very fair chance to become my default browser. Safari gets an extra point because I like the brushed metal. Camino gets an extra point because of type-ahead find. But so far nothing beats the AdBlock extention for Firefox.
If could get AdBlock type blocking on Safari I'd finally make the full leap.
I think I read something about that, the service shows up but due to a bug fails to connect. It's documented by Apple and will probably be fixed in Tiger (at least I hope so).
My website http://digitalelf.net comes up in the top 5 in Google if you search for "digital elf". It was number 1 until the Digital Elph camera came out and became popular. MSN's search finds exactly zero pages for "digital elf" or "digital elph". I then searched for "debian linux" and got a message saying "your request could not be fulfilled".
Aparently this is not a search engine preview, it's a what-a-search-engine-might-look-like-but-only-in-a ppearance preview. Unfortunately it looks hiddeous.
I haven't set up NFS, but it should be just like the AFP stuff. Apple says that AFP, WebDAV, SMB and NFS are all browsable by the Finder.
Anyway, if what Apple is giving out now is the same as what I downloaded a few months ago it's really pretty easy.
I wrote up a quick and dirty Linux Rendezvouz HOWTO-MINI on my website. If you're moderately familiar with UNIX you should be able to use that as a base to set up NFS or anything else you like.
At the very least this takes away the ability for MS to use something like this for a "New in Longhorn!" marketing point.
Not only that, in Jobs' keynote speech on Monday he said several times "Longhorn will have this in two to three years, with the Mac OS you'll have it in Tiger".
Yeah... I once heard that, long ago, when you got a computer, you got the SOURCE code to the OS. I mean...can you imagine?!? The actual CODE to the OS... it just blows my mind! I wonder if we'll ever see those days again...
While new Macs don't come with the OS source code, you can download it for free. And while it's also true that not all of the software that comes with the OS is open (read Aqua) it is the only hardware available that I know of that the source code for the software that comes with it is available.
This wouldn't be true if there were any PCs that came with Linux in their default config from the mfgr.
If that doesn't work, try resetting the iPod as described on page 46 and then try ejecting it.
I'd really like to see what's on page 46. Sometimes my iPod freezes and I've tried every button and button combo that I can think of to reset it but nothing works and I have to wait for the battery to run down.
I even tried looking at the sample chapter on O'Reilly's website which includes page 46, but didn't have anything about reseting it.
If anyone happens to know the secret handshake that reboots the iPod, I'd love to know.
Of course, I had the same thought about the "miraculous virgin birth" when I learned about parthenogenesis.
Using parthenogenesis to attempt to "explain away" the virgin birth is just stupid. I quote one of the sites returned in your google search link:
Unusual patterns of heredity can occur in parthenogenetic organisms. For example, offspring produced by some types are identical in all inherited respects to the mother.
It's impossible, even in the absurd event of unstimulated parthenogenesis, for a male to be born this way. Sorry to just blow a big huge hole in your weak arguement, but if you make arguements as dumb as this you should expect it to happen.
1. the deveopers gave it more attention 2. it didn't suck
The last time I tried sunbird as a standalone app it couldn't even perform basic tasks like adding an event. The last time I installed it as part of Firefox or Thunderbird it wrecked the app so bad I had to delete it, my prefs, and reinstall.
Just for the sake of giving it another shot I just installed Sunbird into Thunderbird. It looks nice, but nothing happens when I try to create a calendar.
For Mac OS X there's iCal, for windows there's eventSherpa Lite. Unfortunately, there is still no program utilizing this open standard on Linux.
If you build it they will come.
If Apple ported OS X to x86 software vendors would do the same.
If you watch the keynote speeches by Jobs at the WWDC and by Schillner at the Apple Expo you'll see that Tiger is meant to do just that.
And yes, I already id switch, I'm typing this up on my new 20" iMac G5.
Yea, like that USB thing, Firewire, ditching the floppy, colorful computers, photo management software, digital music players, WiFi, bluetooth, video editing, dvd burning. I'm not sure I should bother with a response. Either you're incredibly dense or you're a troll, or you're an incredibly dense troll. Ok, here goes...
I don't mean running the program from the command line to launch a gui window. I mean something that works like locate and uses metadata.
Duh.
Don't tie it to KDE! Make it KDE independant!
Make it so it can be used from the command prompt. Make it so it can be used from GNOME. Make it so it can be used by other non-de X apps. Make it so it can be used by Apache, or Samba, or anything else running under UNIX.

Big freaking deal. I'll just make the change without warning you in the setup program.
HAND.
I've got the originals on DVD. I copied them from a friend of mine who picked up a tiawanese bootleg set at a pawn shop.
It's got surprisingly good quality, and I was absolutely delited to find that it was the original trilogy.
The only down side is that the subtitles are in engrish. Oh well, can't win em all.

My Apple iBook G4 gets 4-5 hours on full backlight, and close to 8 on dim.
I'd love to get some info from you on setting this up.
I sort of get the feeling that Microsoft is releasing source code to some so that they could eventually attempt to do what SCO is doing. UNIX may have no trade secrets left, but Windows certainly does.
I can think of a reason.
Ok, you guys rock. PithHelmet is sweet. Now if we could only get type-ahead find...

because I'm probably not the only person who downloaded the rendezvouz code months ago, compiled it and have been running it on their linux box.
Rendezvouz enabled clients on my home network will find my linux box available over rendezvouz for AFP, FTP, SSH, HTTP and IPP.
Mac users will feel (and have felt for quite some time) right at home on my network.

The console was in manufacturing production from 1970 to 1990.
You do the math.
