It would be like Slashdot trying to dictate the terms of Firefox development and distribution because Firefox is able to connect to and use Slashdot.

you sir are wrong, Second Life is a custom developed application not a web site. To tell you the truth I am surprised they ever allowed third party viewers to connect at all. While I think its backward that they are trying to get a grip on it now, they have not done any damage to you using the GPL code they are simply saying you can no logger connect to THEIR services with it. The content they are saying you will have to remove is simply in world content and not code ... which is another odd one given they are not the copyright holders of most of the info.

They own the servers and if they dont want you to connect that should be their right, seem pretty clear to me.

Oracle,Websphere, and the like still get Red Hat license for Oracle support but Red Hat support is horrible and always has been. I have never gotten a good answer from them, and usually its the same thing that the first hit on google finds. Last time they took me though a whole mess to run dumps for them and such and told me it was a bad power supply, luckily I did not believe them and when IBM ran the diags it was a bad cpu ... nice job guys.

I tried to create a Second Life account last night ( I am not providing a link since they are morons ) and this is what transpired.
    From me:

      Hello,
I keep getting this and am not sure why.

The name I am trying to use is Jassin Eliot

When I check it looks like it should be fine

      Congratulations, the Second Life name
      Jassin Eliot
      is available!

Be sure to complete the registration process to claim and lock in your
new Second Life name. Then you can begin to use Second Life immediately

    Sam,
No I am trying to register that name.

    From Second Life support:

    Hello,

    Thanks for your response.
Unfortunately, avatar names with the letters "ass" cannot be used in
Second Life, in order to prevent name abuse.

    Regards,

    Sam Linden

Now is not just the dumbest thing you have ever see. If you look at there site:

Global Standards, Local Ratings All areas of Second Life, including the www.secondlife.com website and the Second Life Forums, adhere to the same Community Standards. Locations within Second Life are noted as Safe or Unsafe and rated Mature (M) or non-Mature (PG), and behavior must conform to the local ratings. Any unrated area of Second Life or the Second Life website should be considered non-Mature (PG).

Last I check they could say "ass" on public tv. Also one can see that this is not a attempt to use invalid account names. If you can think of a name (i.e. in published list of names ) please let me know I would like to compile a list of banned names. Heck at least run it through a common name filter.

Sorry man but your a littel off on this one. I am a die hard capitalist also, but in a true free market people pay the actual value of the product. In this case if the perceived value is $0 then they deserve to fail. If this where true people would elect not to run it, but by installing this software people give it value. That value is diffrent to each individual, but still value that many are not paying. So these dontations are more like shareware payments rather then "gifts".

Red Hat has done well by turning there back on the desktop, and going after the buisness server market. Even in the last year with all their GUI changes I have not seen desktop improvement. They do not care about the desktop, the improvements they have made are only for the use of low quality sysadmins. If you take their classes they say X on all servers, who in there right mind puts X on a web or ftp server?

What distro do you use? Have you ever contributed a penny to them? If so then I would guess that either you are a buisness user or one of the few who has. I purchase RH everytime they come out for with a distro, because I use it on servers. I have started using debian on my desktop and laptop because I like the tools. If I find that it works for me I will give via http://www.debian.org/donations. The free market at work, give it to the people and let them pay a "fair price" as defined by them. Nothing gets more capitalstic then that.

The problem with the model is that the F**KERS who take and never give. If you give code then you have done a good part, if you give money then you have done a good part, if you take and use but never give then you are a drain on resources. Its like f**king welfare for the computer user!

So grow up and pay what you feel its worth, if you do not use Mandrake then its worth nothing to you. If you do then you use it for a reason, and it has value. Same thing goes for any other distro!

Yea I know my spelling sucks, but you get the idea.
