  1. Re:Church? on Gran Turismo HD for PS3 Impressions · · Score: 1

i think he mentions church because it is actually written by a PR person at sony... By saying he was at church now all the readers know he is a church going man with the fear of god in him. Clearly a man of good faith would not tell lies... then he proceeds to inform us how good it is.

also, the commenter you have replied to is not being a hypocrite at all, for all you and I know he is a good christian just annoyed by people feeling the need to spread the word publicly. to be a hypocrite he would have had to say something more like... So, I didn't go to church because god doesn't exist on xmas, and instead downloaded a demo for...

luckily i have not said anything about the original poster needing to stop doing it publicly... so... uh, yeah, dude, god doesnt exist, it has nothing to do with this game demo, leave it out of the review.

  6. Re:and that's why you shouldn't use MySQL on Why the Light Has Gone Out on LAMP · · Score: 1

i think the original comment was a bit overly simplified in saying that you just suggest that they go back and simplify the queries, but there is certainly a balance to doing multiple simple queries or one massive query with multiple joins. this is true with ANY database not just MySQL... At least that has been my experience... too often do i see db "experts" writing insanely complex queries that take 20 seconds to run when they could have gotten the same results back in about 2 seconds by just running a looped query. Just because you can build a monster query that returns exactly what you want doesnt mean its going to be faster. I don't care what db you are using, that is always the case. so, when he says that his developers are doing the competent thing, well, they aren't and his suggestion is valid in many cases.

If by 99 cent downloads you mean 23 cent downloads then i agree! well, thats the cheapest you can get it... 90 downloads is ~$20 a month. I believe the most expensive is 25 downloads for ~$10 a month which still only works out to 40 cents a piece...

so... its a quarter the price of iTunes... has no drm... has better quality files 160k - 256k vbr mp3s (as opposed to the 128k drmed file you get from itunes) and in my opinion a much better selection of music...

granted the last one is opinion, but the others are not. i am confused why so many people like and use itunes... but i'm also confused why so many people like what they hear on top 40 radio too, so...

uhm, i seriously doubt this can be done in any sort of meaningful manner. and yes I have heard of networked computers and clusters... there is simply too much information... dont believe me? i just did a very quick search on google and came up with the following article:

    http://www.eff.org/Privacy/Foreign_and_local/?f=cs e_canada_sigint.overview.txt

    and to quote:

"In any case, the volume of Canadian domestic communications is far
too great for any Canadian intelligence agency, or even the
enormous NSA, to monitor more than a fraction of it, even if
Canadian communications were at the top of the monitoring priority
    list."

thats canadians... you know how much more traffic is going on in the US? think about how often you talk about bombs and terrorists and airplanes and other nasty words on the phone with your friends... now, flag them all... now sort through them... good luck getting anything useful out of this... a much more likely scenario is that certain citizens have been marked to be monitored... my guess is all their communication was monitored, not just the communication taking place with someone outside the country.

  9. headphones on Making Modifications to Your Computer Workspace? · · Score: 1

I have found that a really nice pair of comfortable headphones make me about twice as productive (and thus happier) as I would be without. If your job can support you listening to music (and thus blocking out the external distractions) while working, its worth investing in a pair that you will be comfortable wearing for hours and hours at a time. I would personally suggest a pair of sennheiser hd580s, but i admittedly have never tried powering them from a computer sound card. really the most important part is the comfort level of the headphones.

well, im not sure the idea of backwards compatibility is actualy exclusive to the revolution considering the fact that my PS2 already plays all the PS1 games and the PS3 is supposed to play both PS1 and PS2 titles. the revolution wont play all of the back catalog nintendo games... the PS3 (supposedly) will play all the back catlog PS games... in my opinion, the playstation is better at backwards compatibility than nintendo will be. its not like i will be able to take my n64 cartridge and stick it into my revolution, no instead i would need to repurchase the game...

then there is the fact that the original xbox already had the arcade system where you could purchase and download games for the machine... again, its not new, but they should have a better catalog, so...

also, the lack of power in the revolution may change the fact that the major games are released on all three consoles... *shrugs*

i do think the revolution looks pretty killer though. its just not quite as revolutionary as you make it sound.

yes, of course i realize that, was just giving you a context of date... it says in the scanned article, which is unpleasant to read, so i wouldnt blame you if you skipped that part, that they have been working on the service since releasing the adapter. so, yeah, several (3 or 4) years ago they started working on the service... its not an afterthought being tacked on now... i think they saw what was in the xbox and said, hey we need to do something in this area for the PS3 now... its not really that big of a surprise... and saying one thing in public while doing something else is nothing new for large corporations...

By that fast you mean over the past 4 years or so? It says they have been working on it since they released the network adapter for the PS2 which was many years ago now. The newer thinner version of the PS2 had ethernet built in... so, basically, its a network service that has been in development for many years... they just havent said much about it... probably a smart move if its as good as xbox live... microsoft isnt big on inovating if it doesnt see any reason to.

  13. Re:Comments on What Workplace Coding Practices Do You Use? · · Score: 1

nonsense... planning ahead does not equal comments in your code... planning ahead, as you mentioned at first, can be in many forms, and hopefully takes place long before you open up your favorite text editor to write some code... if i have created (or been handed) good specs i can start writing clean and decent code without writing it all out in comments first... nor do i need to comment every single little bit of code... you being able to look at code and make such a call based on a lack of comments is silly and just shows a bit of arrogance.

just because someone doesnt comment their code does not make it unplanned, it just makes it (possibly) harder for you to understand. i would rather have code that is easy to read and is well planned (i.e. variable and method names that make sense, logical structure) without comments than crappy code loaded with comments... dont get me wrong, comments are all well and good, but the lack of them do not show a lack of planning... i dont doubt the situation you described has happened, but i do doubt you will always be right in such a scenario...

yeah, its a big deal, and telling me i should merge all my mp3s together is hardly a decent solution... there are plenty of albums that were released with no gaps between the tracks, XTC Skylarking comes to mind... i don't always want to listen to the whole album, but when i do, i would like it to all flow together as it did when it was released... so, yes its a big deal, and not just to DJs... i have no intentions of having two copies of the digital files (1 merged, 1 not), instead i'll just stick to players that can do gapless playback...

I still use cellphone minutes, but its an 800 number so no long distance charges (and i only stalk one person at a time, so i never use all my minutes). costs me 1.9 cents a minute compared to the 69 cents a minute cingular wanted to charge me. there is a bit of an echo, but for the most part the service is really quite good. $25 dollar buy in (and they give you an extra $5 for free) and its as simple as dialing an 800 number and then the number you are calling. no pins or nothing. stalking has never been this good!

you can stick to itunes, but as soon as you buy more than 10 songs in a month you are paying more than their lowest monthly rate.

for me, i have the entire yo la tengo collection that i still need to download, and they are at the end of the list, so i know once i have started downloading those, then it is nearing the time to end my subscription.
