Again, NO CONTRACT REQUIRED unless you buy your iPhone somewhere other than an Apple Store. You can walk out of the Apple Store with your $199 iPhone with NO CONTRACT just as you always could do (as I did).
Yes! I just did it for 2 months in Europe. Unlocked via one "Do it all" click on ziphone.com after which I used any of my SIM cards for different countries. A no brainer. Also, you v=can make Skype calls via fring.com
Unless you unlock it with one click "Do it all" on ziphone.com and make Skype calls on fring.com (from WIFI hotspots). I did it with my iPhone in Europe for 2 months. Just returned.
Had my iPhone in Europe for 2 months - worked great. Unlock at ziphone.com with one click, then insert whatever SIM for whatever country you want. And I thought you Europeans knew something about phones. BTW fring allows you to make calls via Skype WITH NO CONTRACT or W/O a SIM card from any WIFI hot spot.
Which you can do (in a WIFI area) WITH NO CONTRACT on a $199 3G iPhone using fring.com once you've clicked "Do it all" on ziphone.com I've done it and just spent 2 months in Europe on business with my iPhone with a TMobile card and even w/o it making Skype calls in WIFI areas.
Sounds like you don't have an iPhone and have nothing to base your opinion on. I have an iPhone, Blackberry, Tmobile, Sony Erikkson and Nokia, and I can tell you the iPhone leads the way and nothing can even come near it. It deserves the Invention of the Year Award it received from Time. BTW it's easy to unlock (one click on ziphone.com) and easy to use with WIFI as a phone WITHOUT A CONTRACT using fring.com That's my current iPhone, and the new 3G iPhone is an even better bargain (with GPS & 3G) that will revolutionize the cellular and even commnications industry which is why it deserves all the press it is getting. IT'S DEFINITELY A BREAKTHROUGH!
Foret the computer and get them an unlocked iPhone - much easier to use!
I've had mine in Europe nearly 2 months now and find it great to keep in touch with photos, email, web etc. Lately, found I don't even need a SIM card as fring.com provides WIFI phone as well as easy to use Skype. Better yet perhaps they both would like one.
Driving home today, NPR had an expert who indicated when all the Caususes are in Obama definitely will beat Hillary in Texas (he indicated 98 for Obama vs. 95 for Clinton), despite Hillary's 51-48 popular vote advantage.
I guess the networks/media will have to recolor their maps if this is true.
Try Climate & Weather Codes, Fusion, Combustion, CFD, Bio (genomics), and a host of large science/engineering, partial differential equation=based applications requiring the solution of large systems of matrix equations,... Check out:
and select a seat with Power. Most modern planes flying international routes (777 Airbus) are full of them). Getting a cheap adapter sure beats lugging along an extra battery if it were easily replaced (which it actually is).
Looks like Apple made a wise choice for the movers and shakers comprising the "jet set" ( knowledgeable ones, that is).
Checking around, you can find seats on many airlines that have electrical connections so you can charge your MacBook Air's battery. You'll probably need to get a special adapter you can find on the web or check with a seasoned international traveller.
There are leaders and followers. If you step out ahead, you always hear such criticism.
A case in point was when IBM, after having a great go with card punches and readers, decided to move forward with interactive terminals and "update" mfg facilities in Research Triangle NC and Kentucky. Unfortunately, a large group of "followers" was just catching on to punch cards so IBM against it's better technical judgement gave in to growing consumer demand and delayed converting their card punch and card reader production lines several years.
Let's give Apple credit for stepping out and doing what's best for the future and not giving in to the "card punch" slaggard mentality.
I conduct research in a large supercomputer center where Macbooks seem preferred by systems and research people. I agree that 802.11n with Time Machine are fine for incremental encrypted backups(Filevault).
Apple's due credit for anticipating & producing this cutting-edge notebook the leaders and shakers in Supercomputing (including nerds & geeks) are likely to adopt quickly.
Except for M$ original Basic on the PC, I can't recall any significant Microsoft Big Surprises that rank anywhere in the league with:
1. Job's 1st Apple 2. Job's 1st Mac 3. Job's Superior virus-free O/S 4. Job's Superior & fastest browser, Safari 5. Apple-based System X Supercomuter at Virginia Tech 6. Job;s 1st iPod 7. Job's 1st iPhone
all which revolutionized the industry.
M$ Zune, table tablet, Vista and phone attempts are all are "duds" and don't hold a candle by comparison. Look for innovation at Apple and Google. Most of M$ "innovation" is based on buying technology developed elsewhere as was documented in a WSJ article which enumerated wher most mjor M$ products we associate with M$ originated.
Don't hold your breath for any "Big Surprises" from M$.
I even prefer the latest iWork to Office (especially Keynote & Numbers compared to Powerpoint & Excel) which they are compatible with.
Guess he hasn't tried iPhone for maps yet. Mine works great! Someday perhaps he'll catch up with the rest of us. I question whether a gphone can catch iPhone as the horse is already out of the barn and running fast.
We bought 3 Mac Minis, 2 with 512MB and 1 with 256MB which was very slow compared to the others. After buying an inexpensive memory upgrade from http://www.macsales.com/ I installed it per their online video, and presto, Mac OSX has sufficient memory to run fast..
Anyone out there with MacMinis with 512MB should upgrade ASAP as you don't have sufficient memory for OSX to be effective,
We also bought a faster, larger disk for the (former 256MB) MacMini, and easily installed it per online video for another speed boost, although not as dramatic as the memory upgrade. It helps to haver more than one Mac Mini to compare. Some who don't, just may not realize why their Mac Mini seems so slow....The answer may be insufficient memory. BTW some thinks it violates Apple's warranty to upgrade memory, disk etc, on your own. NOT TRUE. They even info on their own site how to make such upgrades. However, you're still responsible if you do something dumb like dropping it or hitting it wirth a hammer.
They may be more widespread than you suspect. On my last visit to lower Manhattan, I found 45 wifi hotspots in our son's building alone, of which 7 were free. I suspect most people have wifi at home and at work and numerous spots along the way. Even our church has free wifi! No Joke!
Although a poor Fortune/CNN story, you'll find interesting comments here.

Somehow Slashdot missed the LESS THAN sign before 512MB above.
It was meant to say (and typed with a LESS THAN sign) as:
Anyone out there with MacMinis with LESS THAN 512MB
