I'm not sure how it could run Linux applications without interpreting them. It interprets the X86 machine code into Cruesoe code. Even if it had the entire Linux kernel on it it would still have to do that, as far as I know.

Just as a nitpick. The point of a patent is to protect the first person/company to develop something that is not obvious and/or required large resources to develop (so they have some method of compensation through licensing). IMHO a patent on "shorthand for a computer" is neither obscure or hard to produce. Software/Hardware to run this might be, but that doesn't seem to be what they're complaining about.

These people invented the whole concept Of handwriting... or of handwriting on a computer? I doubt they invented either one. Or even thought of it first. I'll admit that they invented some cool stuff but unless Grafitti is a direct copy of the way the Unistroke letters look, I think they're full of air. Shorthand had the concept for unistroke before they did, but I doubt they're patent would look quite so good if it just patented they idea of shorthand on a computer.

... a good, ethical use of this technology would be 'blocking out objectionable signs or covering up a competitor's logo' or using it to project images of burning piles of questionable books, and death camps for people who we deem lesser.

My problem with an overflow page is that it seems it would just up the S/N ratio of slashdot comments. It seems like 7 out of 10 articles are littered with "This Sux" posts how much more would that go up when people are bitching about some story that didn't get in, instead of this one. As is alot of posted stories just don't interest me. I don't think that there would be more interesting content if I could see the ones they threw out.

Actually I am looking forward to Oni (in fact it's the only game I'm looking forward to). I've been told Halo is cool but it's still an FPS to me. I'm sure it'll be a good one but that's kinda like a good Yugo.
I think a great way to develop game software would be to make a new game. Every game I've seen has been a rehashing of the same old crap over and over again (yeah yeah Halflife blah blah blah). I now hate 1st person shooters and am getting pretty damn sick of Command and Conquer clones too. I'm pretty sure I could get a quick turn around on a game if I were useing a cookie cutter too. </rant>
So in the future PDA's will get more powerful, and people will wear them instead of carrying them. Oh yeah and will continue to create a bunch of mostly useless devices like the poultry thing. Great. To the new age of computing. May it be the same as the last.
I agree... however as I was reading the article I found I was more offended by the continuous use of the word innovate then anything else. I really hate that word almost as musch as integrate or e-.

What if 5 years later the cancerous agent you developed was studied and directly led to a breakthrough that cured cancer in everybody (or even just in black people).
While this is a pretty cold view point, but it's one that I definitely hold to. Science/Progress should not be capped or helded back, because of what it could be used for.
I guess the way I would view your situations are: The person who designed the toxins would not be at fault, but the person who handed it over, knowingly to someone who had malicious uses for it would be (as well as the person who used it).

I would imagine that in other countries, companies that do this just don't have as many resources to back up absurd patent claims.
