I like some of Apple's products but also dislike their business practices and I think Steve Jobs was an asshole. I have no brand loyalty...whatever is a bood value gets my money.
Are you sure it's an interplanetary network and not an intraplanetary network since it's not technically between two or more planets but rather from LEO to the surface of the same planet?
I thought the statement, "Don't forget, there was a substantial overlap between the wave of computer professionals who came of age in the '60s and that era's counterculture" is as good as this one: "I haven't been abducted by aliens since I've got a dog as a pet so aliens must hate dogs."
Or Steve Martin in The Jerk who correlated oil cans behind him getting shot as someone hating oil cans when in fact the shooter was shooting at Steve Martin but missing and since the oil cans were behind him they were being shot, "He hates these cans. Stay away from the cans."
All the machines I've used to import test answers didn't require conductivity, it was optical so a #2 pencil or a black marker would work so long as the mark was dark enough.
In the real world, where most of us live, making the most of the situation is normal and expected. If that means avoiding taxes, then so be it; it's not about integrity or honesty, it's about being pragmatic and frugal...those loopholes can be closed but they aren't for some reason or another. It's human nature to look out for yourself so long as what you're doing is legal...if you don't like it then you follow your own made up rules while we comply with the laws and the benefits of the loopholes.
They should change the title to, "students and postdocs at the University of Zurich spend a lot of money in one day" or something to that effect. Building supercomputer today involves some skill and a lot of money but it's not the chore it used to be.
Funny how angry people's posts on/. often are. I don't like in a cave, don't eat grass, and don't give a crap about toads but I think it's our hubris that compels humans to try to do what they perceive as good even though it's a disservice to those toads.
Drivers in Washington DC can't communicate on the highways and instead use hand signals to communicate with other drivers. Kind of an interesting adaptation...
If a species has gone extinct in the wild should humans reintroduce them? I assume species go extinct because they are nonviable...who the heck are we to play God when the reintroduced species will most likely suffer and/or perish again.
...and the tightly focused beam of a (frickin') laser would make pointing it difficult. Atmospheric absorption, refraction, diffraction, etc. all make this more and more complicated. Wires, batteries, nuclear, and solar are much easier I think.
Teacher unions are a large part of problem but teachers need some form of motivation to teach and not just teach the test. This, along with the economy and international relations/defense should be the President's priority whoever the President happens to be.
The Curiosity rover went overbudget and cost US taxpayers $2.5B (http://www.space.com/10762-nasa-mars-rover-overbudget.html). When America is running a $16T deficit and borrowing $T+ each year I think "nice to have" things like space exploration should take a back seat to feeding our citizens and keeping them/us safe. The US government is working on self-actualization yet US citizens are more focused on physiological and safety needs.
We kind of have this in the USA right now but instead of hauling people off they call them racists and ridicule them...step 1 of a 12 step program to control speech.
You have a point: people have difficulty discerning the difference between a 7.0 and a 6.0 yet they are massively different in terms of threat to life and property but they don't appear much different.
I disagree with you on the "crying wolf" portion. Six Italian scientists were recently convicted of manslaughter for not warning citizens of an impending earthquake and because they made it seem innocuous. Crying wolf may be the safe thing to do for safety (e.g. better safe than sorry) and to avoid going to jail.
Space launch is something that costs billions of dollars. That's why the government uses commercial companies to help them out after the government-only launch programs stagnated years ago. Who is able to "put their money where there mouth is" regarding space launch or satellite design/build/deploy? If I did then why would I be posting on/. using a TRS-80?
The "liberal Kool-Aid" comment was referring to jhoegl's post that sounded like a Democratic talking paper. Didn't mean to jump the rails but comments like that really wear me down, unfortunately they are far too common as we're inundated with commercials and talking points ad nauseam.
I stand by the fact the government's role is not to design, build, launch, and operate satellites the boosters and the launch facilities. The government's role is to to state the strategic vision of the country, put incentives in place for corporations to meet those needs (unless military specific like GPS [originally] or DSP), and get out of the way.

The irony is the anti-Apple fanboys got to this story first and seem at least as rabid as the pro-Apple fanbois.
He could be bribed if he didn't quit or out himself. Didn't have to do both but good for him, I think he's a great patriot.

No, Chuck Norris has five more testicles which would mean he has seven total, assuming Steve Ballmer has two.
In a related story, Chuck Norris challenged Mr. Ballmer to a Who Has More Testicles Contest. Chuck won by five.
"All your data are belong to us."
XOXO, US Government

First person to put Neverwinter MMORPG into a pumpkin will make it onto /.
Does "a zillion" now equal 128? Not really newsworthy...
Full Metal Disney has been on YouTube since August 2010 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3woEDTUbDYg
...and Full Metal Vader has been there since June 2009: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgFgEqm3o60
Maybe the Disney death squad is on strike. The Samuel L. Jackson and Joe Pesci Vader videos are about as good.
Love the tag "noooooooo". I keep this URL handy at work, for emergencies: http://www.nooooooooooooooo.com/
Always makes me grin.

Teachers in Chicago make nearly that yet their students' score poorly on standardized tests.

You mean like Elmer Fudd's house (FF to 6:09)?
