Sorry, but voting for what you believe in doesn't sound like oppression to me.
Actually, it is, if it involves voting for a measure that oppresses others.
Or do you think voting for segregation doesn't qualify as oppression?
All that said, I happen to agree with you: using intimidation is the wrong thing to do. It's a shame the homosexual community (or, at least, the subset of said community that's involved in this) hasn't learned anything from the words of Martin Luther King.
Those are used by everyone (or at least the majority).
Really? Huh... I had no idea the majority of people had need of the fire or police departments at any given moment. Last *I* checked, most people *didn't* actually make use of their services on a day-to-day basis. Not very fair, really... why should they pay for it if they don't avail themselves of their services? And I know *I* have no more need for the K-12 school system, nor do I have any children, so why the hell should I pay for that?
Oh, right. Because societies choose to subsidize certain things because, overall, the benefits outweight the costs. Then again, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised an American doesn't get this... you people have to pay for your own healthcare, ffs, which is an absolute perfect example of a service that should be universal specifically because the benefits outweight the costs. And if you can't even convince people the government should provide healthcare, how, dear god, could you be convinced that post-secondary education is similarly important?
No, they really weren't. Statistically, loans made by CRA-regulated banks were *less* likely to enter foreclosure. The idea that CRA loans were of lower quality because banks were "forced" to make the loans is an outright fabrication.
Studies have found that there is no statistical difference in forclosure rate between CRA-regulated banks and unregulated banks.
Actually, there was a study that found a statistical difference between CRA-regulated banks and unregulated banks, but it isn't what the OP thinks. CRA-regulated banks were *less* likely to experience foreclosures. Citation.
However, less need for AC only means that the venting controls will mix less or more fresh air across the diffuser/exchanger in order to maintain a comfortable temperature.
Bullshit. Less need for A/C means the steady state load for the system is smaller, which means smaller A/C systems can be installed, resulting in better fuel efficiency. See this report for their conclusions.
That being said, why do some people think it's a great idea vote people into office who will tax us to come up with these half-witted "solutions" that don't even make any noticeable difference?
Oh, cool! So you've traveled to the future and discovered that these regulations have made no difference on fuel consumption? Neat! I suggestion you a) inform them of your data, and b) travel back in time and bet on the stock market, you soon-to-be-rich bastard!
Witness the rise of "disorders" like Aspergers or ADHD; habits and attitudes which cannot be accepted as a normal part of the human condition, and which must be medicated to bring them closer to the ideal or "normal".
No offense, but you're an idiot.
The inability to recognize emotions or body language in another individual, or to concentrate on a single task for a period of time, is clear evidence of a malfunction given that the human brain has evolved to specifically do those things. Christ, by your logic, people who are chronically depressed are really just fine... it's society's labeling of their suicidal thoughts as a "disorder" that's the issued.
The real problem is that Aspergers and ADHD may (MAY) be overdiagnosed in some cases... and, regardless, the public perceives it that way. But that doesn't change the fact that those conditions *are* real medical conditions.

Torrent and FTP are much more efficient, especially when handling interrupted transfers.
Bullshit. Bittorrent isn't appropriate for all applications, and for large transfers, HTTP and FTP are basically a wash as far as efficiency goes, while HTTP handles resumes just fine (the browser needs only to send along a start offset in the request header). Meanwhile, unlike HTTP, FTP doesn't play well with firewalls or caches.

You *are* aware that HTTP is used to transfer more than just HTML, right?
"the best healthcare system in the world"? Which Americans are these, who are saying that? I haven't heard that at all.
Apparently you haven't been paying attention to the absurdities broadcast by Fox News, particularly Glenn Beck, and Rush Limbaugh. They have *specifically* stated that the United States has "the best healthcare system in the world". And a large number of (deeply, though amusingly, deluded) Americans actually believe them.
Taxing the shit out of their citizens, that's what.
Good job dodging the question with yet another, completely unrelated, unsupported assertion. So, let's try this again. And pay attention this time. You said:
If the government pitched in $5,000 to everyone who attended college, colleges would simply increase tuition by exactly $5,000.
Given that logic, students in Europe should be paying the same rates as the US, plus the amount of money the government throws in.
Except they're not. They're paying a fraction of what an average US student pays (just as I did, here in Canada).
So, once again, if Europe and Canada subsidize education, and the result is education that, to the student, costs 10% of an equivalent US degree, why wouldn't a similar approach work in the US?
i agree with electricians, but not plumbers. i've met plenty of plumbers who have been in the trade 20+ years and are dumb as a post, doing 3rd rate work all the way.
Funny, I could s/plumbers/programmers/ and your post would be equally valid.
Damn right. I'm a software developer by trade, university educated and reasonably experienced, and I think I do my job pretty well. But throw me in front of a plumbing or electrical problem and I have no frickin' clue what I'm doing.
The idea that tradesmen aren't every bit as skilled and intelligent as your average university grad is absurd. Sure, the guy doing basic framing may be a bit of a dolt, but so is the idiot technical college grad pounding out Java code for some corporate IT department.
But an experienced, capable tradesman? That's something else entirely.
First, kids don't value free stuff, but they'll take it anyway.
Then you claim:
Third, it increases the number of people staying because of the Mom and Dad factor. I'm of the opinion that even the upper grades of *high school* are a waste on a significant number of people, because they simply don't care and are only there because they "have to be."
So, apparently, kids will take free stuff, but only do it 'cuz they have to? Huh?
The rest if your post is easily refuted by a simple concept you're apparently unaware of: entrance requirements. Joe Idiot won't be getting into University if he doesn't have the grades, so he won't have the opportunity to "take it anyway" because he didn't value his education enough to qualify. And that is as it should be.
But for those ambitious enough to achieve the rigorous entrance requirements that would inevitably come as a result of the massive influx of new applicants to state-sponsored universities, why the hell *shouldn't* they get a free education if they qualify for it, given that K-12 is already covered?
Oh, don't get me wrong, I admire your ambition and tenacity, not to mention your financial planning. My point is simply that your situation is *far* from typical, and most people are not in the position to take the risks you've chosen to take.
But good luck! I wish you all the best. The entrepreneurial route is a tough one, but the rewards are enormous... which, really, was the point of my original post.:)
Hell, my wife and I decided to go to the local NHL skills competition. Now, my wife is more of a hockey fan than I, so I figured I'd bring my laptop along so that I might do a little hacking during the event. Naturally enough, security searched my bag, and yes, they insisted I check my fucking laptop, despite the fact that it doesn't even have a god damned camera on it.
In short: people are stupid. Really *really* stupid.
As far as salary part goes, my view was that I would just consider that I was kicked out by a company and did not get a job for 1 year.
Apparently you live in a different world than most, as that would be considered a huge risk for most people. A year is an awfully long time to go without an income stream.
If my ideas are indeed valuable, what is the best way to gain anything from them without investing too much financially?
What you're asking is impossible. If you really want to gain from your idea, then you're gonna have to take a risk. That's just life. And the willingness to take risk is what separates the plebs from the big winners.
And, for the record, I'm a proud pleb... I just happen to realize it.:)
Human beings can survive perfectly fine on a diet that does not include meat as a matter of biology.
That's splitting hairs. Milk and eggs are still animal products, and there are many who would object to their consumption.
The simple fact is we've evolved over millions of years to consume a diet that includes meat. Hell, it's the entire reason we were able to evolve these huge brains of ours: only meat could provide the density of calories needed such that the surplus could be used to fuel an oversized brain. Put simply, anyone who believes that eating meat or animal products isn't part of our fundamental biology is kidding themselves. There is, after all, a reason humans no longer have an organ for digesting cellulose.
As an aside, humans didn't start consuming milk as a regular component of our diet until after the development of domestication, long after meat became a regular part of the human diet. The consumption of milk just made it easier for humans to live a sedentary lifestyle (which itself was a precursor to modern societies).
Human beings can survive perfectly fine on a diet of just vegetables as a matter of biology
No, they can't. Vitamin B12 is only available in meat, dairy, and eggs. Period. Citation. Quote:
The only reliable unfortified sources of vitamin B12 are meat, dairy products and eggs. There has been considerable research into possible plant food sources of B12. Fermented soya products, seaweeds and algae have all been proposed as possible sources of B12. However, analysis of fermented soya products, including tempeh, miso, shoyu and tamari, found no significant B12.
Portable game systems are now competing with cell phones. Nintendo needs to realize that for their next portable game system or it will be limited to elementary and middle school kids. Beyond that age, they want a PDA / cell phone.

it is not fair to heavily tax everyone to give luxuries to the few.
Yeah! That's why I demand private K-12 education, private fire fighters, and private police. Stupid luxuries...
Yes they were. Stop lying.
No, they really weren't. Statistically, loans made by CRA-regulated banks were *less* likely to enter foreclosure. The idea that CRA loans were of lower quality because banks were "forced" to make the loans is an outright fabrication.
Aside from that, though, we're in agreement. :)
The problem is that you're trimming the fuel consumption there when there's other places to go looking for wastage that'd be more effective.
Yeah! That's why I refuse to turn off my lights in my house. After all, until my insulation is upgraded, what's the point, right?
Studies have found that there is no statistical difference in forclosure rate between CRA-regulated banks and unregulated banks.
