I don't know where you live, but in the USA the market is mostly early adopters. Since the market is small, costs are high and red tape is abundant. This is a chicken & egg situation. In Germany they said screw it, let's have feed in tariffs instead of subsidies (which keep profits, and costs, high) and cut the red tape. Now half the country is paved with panels.
I'm trying to convince my grandkids' school that they should look into Linux instead of replacing all their XP computers with "modern" machines (with W8 of course). Main argument against it: "You get what you pay for".
On the list of "scams against the taxpayer", education is right up there with the DoD.
We all know people who still have the default desktop wallpaper. Their "administration" never even gets that far.
Of course their PCs are a mess. But they just buy a new one when it slows down/gets a virus/fills up the HD. This is the same type people who buy new cars when the ashtray is full, because they're too lazy to look in the manual for how to empty it.
Windows makes money for The Geek Squad, your local Staples store, crapware vendors, Symantec (shudder), and Microsoft. That money comes from the Suckers. As long as your money goes into their pockets, they will continue to "Recommend Windows".
I just downloaded and installed a new operating system, and it has a menu button in the left corner bottom, just as God intended. When I press the "Windows" key, the menu pops up and I can find all my apps, categorized neat & tidy. What's the problem?

MS sells them a crappy OS, then sells them a "upgrade" to an older OS. Despite the fact that you can get a better OS for free.
