I've been saying this for a long time now. In order for Linux to be a viable Desktop alternative, it must sacrifice security. For a Desktop OS, it's fine, no big deal. If you're installing it as a server, go with the 65MB install without the unneeded "user friendly" features.
They can't, they don't have any say in the matter. Many consumers still want to be able to run DOS and legacy software especially for accounting software.
If Windows isn't too backwards compatible, people will complain like hell and use another OS.
Having a huge marketshare certainly have its advantages but it sure have a lot of disavantages.
I had sent an email to ESR asking him how would developers make money with Open Source. So he replied back telling me that statistics show that 40% of Open Source developers where employed or receiving compensation for their work.
They wanted to save money and so they did. But let me point out that 60% of Open Source developers remain unemployed. If everyone was using free and open source software, not many people would be able to make a living by producing software.
I go to my bank and their's plenty of free AOL CD's. I don't see anyone complaining about that. At the post office they have a FREE promotional offer for yet another ISP. But hey, now that MS is doing it, it must be wrong, even illegal.
yeah sure. MS Money around here costs $40CAD, Quicken costs $99CAD, amazingly Quicken is the best selling one. MS Office costs hundreds of dollars, StarOffice costs $0, amazingly MS Office has a 90% marketshare.
Have you tried installing RealOne on a Windows Machine? Well if you did, you'd realise that Real will automatically makes itself the default player for most media formats. Let's say you want to change your default player for MPEG video clips; you know what? It just won't let you, Real will still be your default player for MPEG clips. I finally uninstalled it and I'm not visiting any more websites that require Real.
What are you talking about? When I registered an internet account for my cousin about a year ago, the ISP sent her a CD with Netscape for Mac and Windows.
then why does Netscape suck under every OS? Oh wait, yeah MS made a deal with every OS to make Netscape a little bit slowler and a little bit buggier than IE. This gotta be the reason.
You guys are criticizing Alan Cox and siding up with AOL? Now I've seen it all. At least Alan isn't a hypocrite. It would be stupid for him to say : "I use Open Source but I work for a closed source company. I don't like monopolies like MS but I don't mind if AOL becomes one."
I, personnally, prefer and use closed source because of the fact that I need the money. But Open Source also have it's advantages. I would like to see its usage expand in education and research institutes.
Besides, AOL will want the RedHat OS to become more convenient, easier to use and they'll sure as hell would want to keep some of their source code close. This will make the RedHat distribution less secure. If you guys are looking for a Windows clone, use Windows. If you're looking for a secure, decent OS with a good geek community, use Linux. Enough said!
Once again I'm right, every government is oppresive, but I'm still looking for the exception.

true but those error messages are usefull to the developper, not the users. Some error messages will provide usefull information to crackers like a database name, the path to a file, etc. I believe that's why they choose to use try/catch.

Well I proved it again. Problem is that some people around here are hypocrites. The only reason they don't like MS is because it's cool not to like them. They don't give a damn if AOL is proprietary, have bad office politics and abuse of their power.

There's nothing to complain about.

40% is clearly not enough.

Just when we thought that MicroSoft licensing is ridiculous, something more stupid comes along.
Dude, $730 billion are spent each year on military stuff around the world. How the hell could they need even more money?

hmmm let's see, Bill created MS which created Windows, the same OS that brought billions of dollars to AOL.
I don't see how AOL can sue MS. Without Windows, AOL wouldn't even be here
Anyway, Bill Gates isn't the CEO anymore.

You're probably still in school, right? All businesses copy ideas from each other and try to improve on them. That's how it works in real life.

how exactly did MS cheat? Gates made MS, how could he cost MS a few billion dollars?
You're not the only one who feels this way.
Besides, who's fault it is if Netscape 6 sucks? Konqueror will slowly but surely kick netscape's ass.

AOL is a closed source company, what is so hard for you to understand? AOL buying RedHat is almost like MS buying RedHat.
At least Alan proved that he's not a hypocrite.

heuh? So does Python.

This reminds me of an article on ArsTechnica which was published a couple of years ago. Take a look and draw your own conclusions
yeah you're right, it's no big deal, it's just an oppressive government.
All governments are Evil, get over it. Without governments who would be able to put a little "evil" in this life, who???
in Short : "Back in the day, MS was happily screwing China. Now China is happily screwing and abusing the work of every Open Source developer".
yep, Viva la revolution!
