.NET is a framework. In short, it simplifies development. It makes programming with SOAP, COM+, etc. a lot easier. You're not limited to one language, you can use Python or Perl or C# or VB and plenty more languages to create.NET applications.
"and it is going to have on one great big server: all the data about me that the CIA(or any advertising agency) could ever want"
That's passport, it's a.NET service but I don't think it'll take off because it's kinda complicated for administrators to set it up, you have to get permission to use it, etc.
That's MS marketing at work,.NET is not that amazing. Well actually it can be amazing if Broadband and Wireless internet connection became mainstream but that's not gonna happen soon.
Have you seen the XP ads? I noticed that Windows is advertised more as an entertainment OS where you can view pics, copy digial pictures, play games, record and play movies, listen to music, scan pics, chat and have fun.
Once a Linux distribution can easily do those things without extra installation/configuration; it'll win the desktop.
They got plenty of movies, $1 is pretty cheap. I can use my Video/Audio Out from my computer to my VCR and record all those movies. So I couldn't care less about the 3 day rule.
Finally someone who understands, this is a brilliant post yet you didn't get modded up. I always said that suffering is a necessary thing. Some people laugh at me when I say that. I believe that life is well planned and everything that exists exists for a reason. Turns out that our creator is pretty damn smart.
I lived a few years in Lebanon when they were in war against terrorism, muslims, and I don't know who else at the time. The government was too busy with war so we didn't really have any cops, you could kill a man and noone would give a damn.
To my surprise, crime was a very rare thing. Maybe it was because war made people care about each other a little more or maybe it was because of the fact that there wasn't any government and laws to fear or maybe it's a little of both.
They're talking about Linux everywhere, so it's probably more used than Solaris.
Yeah but now that Oracle is using Linux, the people buying those big Sun machines may change there minds and go with Linux in the future especially because it costs less.
I'm totally unbiased here, I'm just telling what I'm noticing.
I agree with you on everything except about the last paragraph. Where would we be without a government and laws? No governments = No wars. Sure crime will still exist, just like it exists now. You can't stop crime. Also, I think we would be saving $730 billion/year on military stuff.
Actually I think the world would have been a better place to live in. Of course I can't be 100% sure; if there's too much evil in men then anarchy would be worthless. But I believe that most people are peacefull, especially when they're asleep:)

There's a lesson to be learned from all this. Companies should never get too big because some people will be jealous, angry and dangerous. The same advice is valid for individuals to, if you're too successfull, have too much money, etc. people will try there best to make your life a miserable one.
Its lawsuit after lawsuit after lawsuit, it never ends. Weird enough nobody considers suing Sun's Passport clone, brought to you by the famous McNealy with his famous quote "there's no such thing as privacy, get over it."

Hmmm let's see. The XBox sold more units than the GameCube. You're right it's not going to be a success.
What kind of news is this? I've been able to record movies from my TV for a few years now. ATI has been selling TV capture cards for a long time now.
Well I believe they both have Video/Audio Out which makes it possible to connect them to my video/sound cards and record the DVD's.
Wakeup, most people are using KDE

Where's the problem here? Last time I checked, Apple "borrowed" the GUI from Xerox and the code from BSD.
Reverse engineer Mac OS X? OS X is based on BSD. You obiously are no Mac user nor a Windows user.
There's plenty of free open source software, why should I pay for shareware?

well my needs aren't that big yet, two web servers are doing the job extremely well for me.

Well, Linux is more popular than Solaris. That alone is good enough. He wants to gain marketshare.

Don't worry there won't be an antitrust suit against AOL. Just like Intel, AOL gives generous contributions to the government.
how is this a Troll? Can you prove that my theory is wrong?
Jon Katz wants tech companies to offer free tech support. Free software + Free tech support = 0 Profits. We can't offer everything for free.
Sure they do because they'll be partnering with AOL and other huge companies.

Well its what you do with it. I've seen awfull webpages but I didn't stop using my browser because of them.
I couldn't have said it better. Mod this post up (I mean the post I'm replying to not mine).
